Because alot of us aren't so progressive or tolerant. There are alot of people out there that think that the opinion they have is right. Opinions are opinions though.letterbomber223 said:Hmmmm. Good point. Anyone can get 'married' at the registry office but only parishioners of X church can be 'wed' there, pour example. Yeah I'm down with that.Schadrach said:Harbinger_ said:I believe that homosexuals should have the same rights as people but I don't think that churches should be pushed to marry homosexuals as if its God's wish as it says in the bible that homosexuality is a sin. Also I don't like seeing homosexual acts so yes have your rights as long as they're not shoved down my throat. I find it all disgusting personally but thats just me.The only real solution to all of this is to explicitly separate legal and religious "marriage" and use separate language for the two. Legal "marriage" then holds all legal rights associated with the institution and is not restricted by race (I always love to point out to the "marriage hasn't changed in hundreds of years" folks that it wasn't that long ago that interracial marriage was not legal in the US), sex, or orientation. Religious "marriage" is entirely up to the church performing the ceremony in question -- this ceremony confers no legal status of any kind and it is entirely up to that religious institution who they perform any ritual, ceremonial, or celebratory functions for. To mandate otherwise would be in violation of their first amendment rights.letterbomber223 said:Agree to a point. LGBT folk should be allowed to get 'married' - even if certain churches want no part of it, there shouldn't be a legal or linguistic difference between what straights do and what gays do.Harbinger_ said:I believe that homosexuals should have the same rights as people but I don't think that churches should be pushed to marry homosexuals as if its God's wish as it says in the bible that homosexuality is a sin. And I think homosexuality should avoid being shoved down people's throats only as much as heterosexuality is. Sexuality in general is overused by lazy advertisers and it seems unfair that it's always straight.
Why can't escapist be in charge of politics, we do all right here.
Yes! See, if we had smoking areas and non-smoking areas, everyone would be happy.Schadrach said:This one I'm less in agreement with. Your health risk to yourself is you own business. Your health risks to others aren't, and unfortunately smoking effects those nearby as well. There was an IHOP near where I live that had the right idea -- the smoking area was in an enclosed glass room was separate ventilation and a maintained negative pressure (so air would flow in but not out when the door was opened). This let the smokers smoke, while letting the nonsmokers not have to deal with it at all.
They have to be smoking and nonsmoking areas that are separated in such a way that they have distinct airflow and persons in one are explicitly not breathing the same air as persons in the other, otherwise such a division is meaningless.boosh-boosh said:Yes! Totally. Only I'm not smart enough to suggest how :LSchadrach said:They have to be smoking and nonsmoking areas that are separated in such a way that they have distinct airflow and persons in one are explicitly not breathing the same air as persons in the other, otherwise such a division is meaningless.
That's exactly my point, we wouldn't KNOW about art, language and other things, so it wouldn't bother us that we don't know about it. Yes effectively for my theory to work we would have to sacrifice what "makes us human" but once it's done, we would have no recollection of the sacrifice, if you see what I mean.JoJoDeathunter said:But surely then we would lose everything that makes us human; our art, our language, our discoveries and inventions, our love, our dreams... strip us down to animals and that's what we'll be, just one of the many sentient but not sapient animals on this Earth. Sure, there wouldn't be any ideological conflict but there wouldn't be anyone to reflect on how that would be a good thing either.
Don't we all?Prince Regent said:I dislike Ike.
Sorry, I know this is meant to be for controversial opinions but I'm just not seeing the benefits here. Losing our sapience wouldn't decrease suffering at-all, as we'd go back to the majority of people dying in early childhood of predation and disease, and the ideological conflict would be replaced by far more common low scale fights between tribes. I suppose we might not be aware of that suffering to the same extent, but then we'd also lose everything good about humanity.Davey Woo said:That's exactly my point, we wouldn't KNOW about art, language and other things, so it wouldn't bother us that we don't know about it. Crippled =/= Full on retarded. And read the topic line. I know that my way of thinking isn't right ethically, but fuck ethics.Ironic Pirate said:Oh no, the poor crippled man is unable to find a job! Seriously, dude, that is completely unnecessary.
Ooh, this is a good one - people always seem to assume that if you think this then you must hate and/or sneer at all the dirty, dirty people who go around having unmarried sex...Sniper Team 4 said:I believe sex is a special, meaningful act that you should share only with the person you are married to. Well you started of with saying " unable to find a job" which threw me a bit off. And lets say he was born able bodied and then got crippled after having worked for some time, then he's okay, but if he was born crippled or became a cripple before any major work then we kill them off. And I'm not being just an ass to others, if this were to happen to me under my rule then I would have myself killed off.Ironic Pirate said:Snip
