My favourite is VI, why? Memorable, loveable characters. Locke, Celes and Edgar were especially good. Don't even get me started on Kefka. One of the better plots in the series, fun gameplay that rarely required grinding and an awesome soundtrack to boot. Tactics is a close second for the mature plot, epic atmosphere(I'm a sucker for atmosphere) and good job system.

On a list of best to worst...

VI
Tactics
X/IX
^
V
IV(DS ver.)
TA/TA2
Crisis Core
IV
XII
VII
Revenant Wings
VIII
Crystal Chronicals
I
III
XIII
II
X-2
Mystic Quest
A raw turd
Dirge of Cerberus

I'm probably forgetting something.

I'll probably be the only one to say it.

FFXI

I'm still playing it, since October 2002. It's gotten very solo friendly, and much easier to level up in the last few months.

For those of you who have played it, go try it once more. You can get the whole game for $4.99 on Steam.

Final Fantasy 10 was incredible, it was a truly moving experience. I fell in love with the characters, the setting, the story, the twists, the everything. The game still mesmerizes me to this day, and to think I hated it for so long...

Everyone is just overreacting to the XIII hate. You'll probably like it since you liked X-2, considering it's directed by Motomu Toriyama as well.
Overreacting?
Perhaps, but I hated XII so much it coloured my view of the series as a whole, and what I'[ve heard of XIII makes me wary, the combat system for instance, to me it sounds absolutly horrible, though I won't activly say anything about it till I've played it.

XIII.

I really, really love the combat system.

The story is okay, the characters are all lacking except for Sazh. But the combat is just so damn good that I don't care.

And Sazh is still awesome enough to over-ride the other characters.

And who cares if it's linear? Now you just don't need to walk 5 minutes across a field to get a chest with a handful of potions.

For what it's worth, it's the opposite of Final Fantasy XII in many ways.

The combat itself?well, it's one of those things you'll have to play yourself, but a lot of people really liked it. The Auto-battle feature isn't needed at any point at the game, and in my opinion it's not suggested because the AI can be wonky at times. The only thing most people are spot on about is the lame one liners the characters have.

I suppose I'll borrow it of my mate to see what I think, but if it kills my love of Dancing Mad I'm coming for you!

One thing yhat worries me is that my mate says that he kinda likes it, but he hates JRPGs in general, which make me think "how different can XIII possibly be from what I normally like?".

Final Fantasy VI. Why? one word: Characterization.
^what the ninja said^

Far from my first FF game though. I played 'em in the fairly typical American order of 1, 4, 6, 7, (a bunch of poorly translated ROMs of 2, 3 and 5), and then the ones that didn't matter.

I have completed X, XII and XIII. Half finished VII and partly played I and IV so I haven't got the most thorough knowledge of Final Fantasy games HOWEVER, if someone was to ask me of my favorite, I'd have to say Final Fantasy X!
It has so far been the only FF game I've wanted to play again just 2 days after finishing it. I also enjoyed XII and XIII no matter what people say about them. But the very best thing about FF X has got to be this scene.

...You monster! For linking that laughing scene, I sentence you to death by being drowned in the amount of hair-gel Seymour uses. XD

OT: For me, it would be FF X, for reasons you can find here. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.166262-Sassafrass-Reviews-Final-Fantasy-X-for-the-PS2#4408188] I got into the FF series with VII, then I played VIII, IX didn't appeal to me for some reason, X did appeal to me, currently playing X-2 inbetween other games and then I skipped XI and XII, with XIII being my latest FF game, which would be my second favourite FF game I've played. All of the main ones except 12 & 13.
main ones don't include 11 & 14 which are mmos.
honestly I've not loved a series as much as this.
It's pretty magic.
I really want 1-10 to play again :) remake them please! :)
I especially loved 7,8,9 and 10 because they're the ones I remember the most, if all the other ones before were brought to home console, I'd snap them up straight away and play them all straight through :)

Nothing can kill Dancing Mad, so I'm safe.

Well, it is much more action oriented than other JRPGs. It's still menu driven "turn based" combat at the core, but it requires you to pay more attention to the game. The linearity is the only other thing, but most JRPGs are linear, they just give the illusion of nonlinearity. Everything else is basically similar, the story is complicated(although it's simple if you can understand the lingo, because the game has no exposition) and there's a lot of melodrama.

The classic ones (1-6) especially FF6 because of all the awesomeness in character development, story, gameplay; this game has everything great in an RPG.

I can't really pick a favorite because I've enjoyed them all for different reasons. So I'll just list my favorites in no particular order.

Favorite Gameplay: FFX-2 because it was the most refreshing of the all the FF
Favorite Story: Tie between FFI and FFVI. Both were really engaging and kept me coming back enough times to play them both 4 or 5 times.
Least liked: Tie between FFII and FFVII. I just couldn't enjoy or get into these ones at all.
Most lols: FFIX. This one always left a smirk on my face. Except for disc 4 :p
If theres anything I will remember about the FF series it is this. The pinnacle of voice acting.

True enough.

Well I don't mind linearity, in fact I kinda like it depending on the genre.
It's the "at the core" bit that worries me, XII was menu driven combat "at the core" and I fucking hated it, not that I needed that as a reason.
I don't mind complicated stories and I enjoy a bit of melodrama from time to time, I've got to be one of the few people who do.

My mate mentioned that about the only way to figure out what was going on was to go in to the menu and read about it, not that I mind reading but "show don't tell" you know, I guess what I'm asking is, is it as bad as he says?

Well, it requires more button pushing than "X/A" like everyone says. The only horrible part about the combat is Leader Death, which I think is universally hated across every game. Otherwise, most people I know say that they really prefer the combat in XIII over XII. I hated it at first too, but there are some times when a game just "clicks", like Demon's Souls if you've ever played it.

Well, they have a few words that they never really explain unless you listen closely. It's not like FFX where Tidus is supposed to be the guide to the world to the clueless audience, but the game puts you in the middle of the storyline and then does flashbacks to show what happened. The story is above average once you figure out what stuff like the l'Cie, fal'Cie, and Cie'th are, and the characters themselves have great character development throughout the story.

I didn't read any of the datalogs and I had little problems with the plot once I knew the lingo.

Seeing as how I've only played VII, X, X-2 and XII...

Tie between X-2 and XII. (I absolutely hate X, the few redeeming features are lost under a mountain of pure bile. ... VII was okay. Not great, but interesting enough to keep me playing to the end.)

X-2, while being nothing but blatant fanservice, was fun. And it had more than one and a half good characters. Sure, out of that big of a cast, only four decent ones isn't great, but it beats the predecessor. And I give credit to the Via Infinito for being genuinely creepy and challenging, I've run it through to the end... I think twice before the PS2 died.

XII? Amazingly fun, the combat was fantastic, there were only two characters I disliked (no prizes for guessing who), good story, and a great setting. I still kick myself for thinking it was boring the first time I played it, and I wish my PS2 would work again so I could play it more <_<

FII, You can buff up to at least 5000 of every start at the very beggining, that is such a bad design choice yet it is so awesome...

13, Because of one word: Vanille. I know some people find her annoying, but i found her a great comfort. Until i found out her backstory, which for some reason, endeared me even more to her.
