I'm a definite VI fan but it's more for nostalgia purposes then anything. It was the first FF I had played through and thoroughly enjoyed (I had rented FF 4(2) first but didn't get into it much until after I was a teenager). I remember always looking forward to the weekends I'd go over to my Dad's house because I knew that the SNES and FF VI were just sitting there waiting for me to conquer them within a weekend :)

Haters gonna hate, but I thought 8 was one of the best in the series. Never mind Squall's angst-ridden dialogue. The story was solidly built and the Junction System, while steep in the learning curve department, was innovative and fun to use, albeit overpowered at times. This is one FF game that I don't mind replaying.

Also, I agree that 5 was a solid entry. I've been playing it on the GBA, and it still stands up to the test of time quite well.

Hmm...its difficult. I like Final Fantasy, and have played and enjoyed at least every title in the main 14, but I can't really pick a favourite. I cant work out why.

It's always FF with you people, isn't it? Never Tales of, Dragon Quest, Shin Megami Tensei or Breath of Fire threads.

Anyway, OT: My favorite is.. IX. Yes, the character design is a little iffy, but it's a really good game. Also, you can give all the male characters female names and somehow it'll work.

Tactics is awesome too, but if we're discussing main series titles, then IX is my choice.

[sub]I never really got around to playing the 2D games (except for VI, which I liked)[/sub]

I don't remember IV or VI very well, but I definitely enjoyed them! I was just too young for me to judge them against any of the others.
Until recently I had only played X and X-2 after those two (Then XIII but screw that), but I bought VII, VIII and IX on PSN when they were released as PlayStation Classics, I've not started IX and I've literally played 11 minutes of VIII but I did complete VII the other day (having not played it for a few months.
So I'm not one of those nostalgia-fanatics that could possibly have a biased opinion of VII (My love of IV and VI IS purely nostalgic though!) but I would list FFVII as my favourite of the series, because it's a goddamn brilliant game!

(And kicking the Weapons in the teeth and then going on to beat Sephiroth with my lvl 99 party gave me a sense of pride I've not experienced for quite some time)

Final Fantasy VI.

Celes, Locke, Tera, Cyan, Edgar...oh the list goes on. Not only some of the most engaging character stories, but easily the single best villain ever, Kefka.

my favorute was either X or XII. not sure where all the hate for XII comes from. i loved the fact in XII the weapon system was free, but X had the best summons ever.

Ah, I knew there was something else in X I didn't hate! The summons were awesome, loved Anima and Bahamut. (And the Omega Ruins were kind of cool, I was really upset when I realized X-2 left them out.)

Well, it requires more button pushing than "X/A" like everyone says. The only horrible part about the combat is Leader Death, which I think is universally hated across every game. Otherwise, most people I know say that they really prefer the combat in XIII over XII. I hated it at first too, but there are some times when a game just "clicks", like Demon's Souls if you've ever played it.

Well, they have a few words that they never really explain unless you listen closely. It's not like FFX where Tidus is supposed to be the guide to the world to the clueless audience, but the game puts you in the middle of the storyline and then does flashbacks to show what happened. The story is above average once you figure out what stuff like the l'Cie, fal'Cie, and Cie'th are, and the characters themselves have great character development throughout the story.

I didn't read any of the datalogs and I had little problems with the plot once I knew the lingo.
Thaanks for the info, I'll at least give it a go now.

I would have to say 3 on the SNES, then 7.

So many people liked 3 and 7 and can't say why... the dark storyline, characters that are all messed up in the head, more mature environment away from the Snes/N64 censorship days, tragic deaths, flawed heroes...

But sadly FF is the staple of "connect the dots" rpg. You have no choice but to do X quest, and go 9/10ths of the game before you get a airship to explore the world. And of course some jackass named Cid has to write himself into the story for ultimate d-baggery.

But then the Kingdom Heart games were enjoyable touching on the Disney old movies where being the bad guy pretty much meant death. And least the voice acting wasn't to bad.

VI is my favourite game ever, so suffice it to say that it is my favourite Final Fantasy. Why? Celes...Kefka...Sabin...

Let's leave these as just 3 of the reasons why :)

I'm gonna have to go with VI. The characters were great, the music was some of Uematsu's best work, and the story was excellent.

FII, You can buff up to at least 5000 of every start at the very beggining, that is such a bad design choice yet it is so awesome...
It also made encounters harder, as they scaled to your stats, and without good enough equipment, you were plenty screwed too. Then again, the whole system was screwed to begin with.

I posted this in another thread, but it applies to this one as well and I could never really voice 'why' again as well as I did that time, so here's a shameless cut-and-paste as to why my favorite game of all time is Final Fantasy X-2.

Before I play Final Fantasy X-2, I have to prepare. I have to plan in advance to set entire weekends aside just for this game. I have to make myself a nice hot cup of sweet, sweet coffee. I have to take a long, hot bath. I have to wear something loose-fitting and comfortable. I have to wrap up in blankets with the massive strategy guide set across my thighs. I've never ritualized a game before or since Final Fantasy X-2, and so many people have asked me "why the hell? Of all the games in the world, why Final Fantasy X-2?" The answer is because I've never, not even once, played a game that elicited every single positive emotional reaction I can think of, except this one. This is the only game that has made me laugh, cry, laugh until I cry, cry until I laugh, place my hands over my mouth in shock and surprise, place my hands over my heart and say "d'awwwww", thrust my arms upward and cheer with satisfaction, and truly feel at peace. I could talk about the combat, which I still think is the best in any J-RPG. I could talk about the amusing dialogue and cast of appealing characters spearheaded by the most believable female Japan has ever written. I could talk about the endless wealth of things to do, the clutch of fun minigames, the sense of wonder as I uncovered all sorts of new and exciting things, but the most important thing about Final Fantasy X-2 is that no matter what, if it's in my PS2 and I'm playing it, I'm always smiling. There is never a moment that is frustrating, never a moment that is tedious, never a "oh god, I have to do this part again?!" part. It dispenses happiness from eye-catching start to heartwarming finish and beyond, never once missing a beat. We're living in cynical times, and anything that can be relied upon to make me feel good no matter what is something to be treasured. I will always treasure Final Fantasy X-2.
I just got just finished Final Fantasy X and started Final Fantasy X-2 and I really don't see why people ***** about it, i think its a load of fun, I kinda wish there were a few more characters and had had lulu instead of paine but thats all i can think about to complain. I have also heard people complain about having to play it twice to get 100% completions but thats not true, you can do it in one run. but its nice to see someone else who enjoys it.

Final Fantasy 8: it was the first MAJOR Final Fantasy i played on a console, before it was just playing the Final Fantasy Legend trilogy. (theyre not really FF games, theyre Saga games)

Others includes
- FF5, i love the Job system slightly allthough it's hardness made me never complete it, Gilgamesh's Music is sheer undiluted Aweomse though, Battle on the Bridge indeed!
- FF6, i first experienced this on the Playstation, allthough after 8/7: It was mainly about the characters really, felt easier than 5, but the characters was what was good: just about every character gets screentime and motives about what they're doing. Also Kefka was a hillarious villain who laughs in the face of insanity...he is insanity!
- FF3....i played both the nes and DS versions, they both have their debatable quirks and bad parts...i love how all 4 Kids are characterised and fleshed out, but it felt a bit cheaty (the DS version) had to grind constantly...think i just gave up since i left it for so long, i forgot what i was even doing.

FF7 is probally everyone's obvious choice, lost interest in that too around Wutai because i missed a few Materia that couldn't be reobtainable....

FF10 is really nice, the characters are pretty divided about their archetypes, but with a bit of Sphere Grid movement, you could potencially gain the other character's skills...never finished it, a brother scratched the disc beyond recognition. *sheds tear*

VII. I love the story, characters (except Cait Sith), and everything about it... Plus it was the first I played...
