The Xtended Mod for X3: Reunion. It was so good the game developers hired the mod developers to make it into what would become X3: Terran Conflict and Albion Prelude.

Cry of Fear for the original Half Life.

My god. That Mod. No words could tell you how terrifying it is. Just..play it.
I've been watching Helloween LP this, and it's surprisingly well made for a mod, Dodgy A.I, and inventory problems aside.

Also, it's scary, very scary. That chainsaw guy in the woods absolutely terrified me, as well as a number of the enemy designs.

I would definitely play an updated version using the Half Life 2 source engine, if they ever make one.

Either Rise of Mankind: A New Dawn for Civilization 4 (Which is technically a mod of a mod, but that's besides the point), or The sounds and graphics overhaul for Morrowind. Makes that game look almost beautiful (damn you character animations!)

I'm going with the Nevada Skies mod in Fallout New Vegas. It doesn't seem like much, but changing the weather has a huge effect on immersion. Clear rolling skies, heavy fog, and even random rain and thunderstorms add a lot to the game. It even makes the nights darker so you can barely see, making traveling areas infested by Cazadors and other nasty critters more intense, and adds ambiance to areas like Freeside at night, which are pitch black and dilapidated, lit by only a few street lights. It's a simple change that adds so much.
hey man, that's two mods... Nevada Skies just requires Fellout (which is what makes the nights/interiors dark... by removing the orange haze from the game).

I'll go with Project Nevada, personally. Makes the shooter parts of the game more functional and the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system have a far greater impact on your character build (also, it makes helmets useful). Hell, I don't even like the game much anymore without it.

The Underdark Saga in Oblivion. Massive quest mod.
OMG Underdark was awesome.

I've always been particularly impressed with the Nehrim mod for Oblivion. It's an entirely different world made by some german guys, with full voice acting, heaps of quests and an incredible new map to explore.
I think the fact that it's all in german too gives me a sense of adventure and new-found whimsy.

Star Trek: Sacrifice of Angels 2 [http://www.moddb.com/mods/star-trek-sacrifice-of-angels-2] for Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity (mostly just for the Diplomacy expansion at the moment, though. It supports Original and Entrenchment, but I don't think they're updated any longer).

The only thing that I think could make it better is if the base game itself had more reliable AI. ... and diplomacy missions that weren't practically impossible to complete early on in a game.

But then, I'm terrible at RTS-style games in the first place, so I usually just turn the AI difficulty all the way down and spend eight hours exploring a massive user-created galaxy, in the base game or in that mod.

Other than that, I don't really do much modding. I did a fair amount of it for Star Trek: Starfleet Command 3 back in the day to add all sorts of ships and tweak around armor and weapon values, I used a bunch of mods along with Skyrim to do mild tweaks to running and magic and the graphical fidelity, but I don't usually... well, I don't have many games that are very mod-friendly in the first place.

The Stanley Parable for Half-Life 2. Sure, there isn't much going for it on a technical or gameplay level, and it doesn't use any custom assets (except for some great voice work). But I can't think of a more clever and funny commentary on choices in games.
Yeah, I'm going to have to agree with this. I didn't even realise there was a third ending until a month after I first booted it up, and the ending for the retaliation plotline was just stellar.
Dude, there are 6 endings (If I remember correctly).

No it's just Nevada Skies. I don't have Fellout but I still get the changed weather and darker nights.

My bad. Looks like they've updated massively from the days when it was built on Fellout. Guess I need to update (I still have the first version of NV Skies I ever saw installed, and it was dependent on Fellout)

Doesn't matter what game it is, I like mods that add animals running around, especially in Morrowind & Minecraft. My 2ed favorite mod is anything that adds more plant life.

In Morrowind I had a Caits compilation mod that added hermit crabs, sand dollars, seashells, starfish, horses, birds, cats, children, villagers, dolphins, fish, moose, squirrels, deer, & dogs, plus all the sounds.

Who wouldn't want to play a 'realistic' elevator experience.

Ok, honestly?

It's a toss-up between Hidden: Source, PVKII, and Eternal Silence.

All three are great games and deserve much more publicity than they currently receive.

PVKII (Pirates, Vikings and Knights 2) is essentially TF2 melee style.

Hidden: Source is about a team of 8 players armed with guns against one nearly invisible player with a knife, pipe bombs, and the ability to pounce really high and far. It's an awesome game, seriously.

Eternal Silence is basically a space shooter, it's really good but there is rarely anybody on the game.

I just googled this Civ IV and it looks damn interesting! I should probably check it out when I have the time.

Skip the Fade mod for Dragon Age Origins.

Does what it says on the tin, skips the fade and gives you all the stats you'd normally pick up. Though there still are the moments with you're companions in the fade, but those were pretty sweet so it's cool.
Holy shit, that exists?
Do they have a skip the deep roads mod too? Because then I might actually be able to beat that game.

As for myself I think I'll have to go with elevator: source for HL2/GMOD. freakin hilarious.
