It's a 3-way tie between Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic. In my opinion all three of the games have a fantastic story to follow, interesting characters and gameplay that keeps me engaged throughout the length of the game, not to mention a script that DOESN'T make me want to chop my ears off.

Fallout 2. For seamlessly taking me from shooting super mutants in the middle of nowhere to playing chess with a radscorpion, to shooting a porno movie, to shooting up 3 mafia controlled casinos and turning a gambler's town into a ghost town, to navigating a super tanker in the middle of the ocean. You cannot beat this game.

Jep pretty much my own interpretation of a near perfect game
Another great RPG was Planescape Torment and Arcanum

Has no one played Panzer Dragoon Saga? Now that was an RPG, the combat system is being used in FF13 for whoevers sake.
Also Pokemon is still the shit, Oblivion is awesome, Mass Effect was too, KOTOR I need to play again.
Fucking final fantasy 9 as well.

I would have to say either the entire fire emblem series(if you want to count that as an RPG) or Tales of Symphonia.

also, Diablo 2 has a special place in my heart as far as games go, and Fable 2 gets special mention because it has my favorite fighting mechanic from an RPG ever.

EDIT: I would also like to mention that Mass Effect was easily my least favorite RPG. Now, I can see it having a good story, but the fact that I circled around the first level about 4 times and the sniping sucked I refused to play more and waste any more of my time.

My favorite RPG is Xenogears, if only for the wicked storyline and play mechanics. One of the first games I ever played that had a point it was trying to get across. There are some honorable mentions to:

Baldurs Gate 1 & 2
Final Fantasy 6, 7, 9 and Tactics
Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2
Legend of Dragoon
Suikoden
Disgaea 1 & 3
Fallout 1 - 3
Star Ocean

I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting but those are my favorites off the top of my head.

Tales of Symphonia.
Although this comes close, I have to go with Golden Sun. Not the second, the first. I just loved it. The story, the characters, the battles, every little bit of it.

The classics:
- Fallout 1 and 2
- Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 with both expansions
- Planescape: Torment
- Arcanum

The indie:
- Eschalon: Book I

The oddball:
- Stonekeep

If I'd have to pick one, it would be... Planescape.

The tales of series is awesome.
Persona 4 is great and Suikoden 5 was also a great game.
And both golden sun games are brilliant. I cant wait for the third one.

Fire Emblem 7 & 8 on GBA.
Wait, what? Those are on the GBA?
Yeah, Fire Emblem 7 was the first FE released outside Japan, and the best one too.
Oh, I misread and thought you said Final Fantasy. Well this is embarrassing.
Haha, you are not the first person to do that. I often do that myself.

For JRPGs I'd say Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy VI.

As for WRPGs I'm going with Planescape Torment and Knight of the Old Republic.

Mass Effect.
Awesome story. Awesome gameplay. And it's just an overall fun game. Here's hoping the new DLC come out sooner than later.
