I'm going to do something very odd: choose a game which would be an unoriginal and boring choice everywhere except these forums.

Halo: Reach. It has its flaws, of course, but most of them are minor and eclipsed by all-round coolness.

Runner up: Mass Effect 2. The characters are so awesome.

Will be getting Metro 2033 for Christmas... :D

I just started the game but it's easily the most interesting game, story wise, that I have played all year, Deadly Premonition. The controls are awkward and the camera sucks but the story easily overshadows the games faults and the town of Greevale is far too interesting for me to stop playing the game. I'm enjoying my time with it.

Other than that I guess I'd have to agree with OP that Red Dead Redemption stands out amongst all the other AAA titles that have been released this year.

Since all the mainstream games I played this year are old, I have to go with either VVVVVV, Minecraft, or Just Cause 2. These were the only games that really grabbed me that came out this year.

Top three (in no particular order):

1. God of War 3
The game promises an epic experience. And it delivers just that.

2. Darkness Within 2: The Dark Lineage
My favourite among the "Lovecraftian" games.

3. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
A nice and original "re-imaging" of one of my favourite games.

Then again, now Red Dead Redemption is angry because it wants to join in...

I loved both Mass Effect 2 and Red Dead Redemption, both amazing games.

Mass Effect 2 takes the title of Game Of The Year though, sorry Rockstar!

Mass Effect 2. I thought it was amazing. The only problem I had with it was the mining, but BioWare fixed that. :D

I got the same problem with it, and I think I know why people praise it somuch, they made a game for the masses.
Basically ME2 isn't an RPG anymore, they dumbed down or took out nearly all RPG elements to the point where it's only a 3rd person shooter with story, and if you put ME2 next to other shooters... well then it looks like jesus returned.
But if you like the previous BioWare work this thing looks shallow.

The story progression seems to me like some sort of McDonalds management checklist, you don't explore and meet new people that come along, you got them lined up to collect, and once you checked all those boxes you go to the second round to gain their trust, and in between you can go scrape the fryer... I mean planets, thinking about it... even the hero is a damn corporate muppet.
Maybe the game is actually a parody?

OT: New Vegas, ya the programmers are a bunch of lazy a*holes but atleast they know how a game should be.
Huh I felt ME2 has much role-playing as ME or virtually any other Bioware games let alone most (if not all) jrpg. That McDonalds manager certainly felt different on various play...

Case Zero. 6 hours per playthrough (that's longer than MW2), a LOT of replayability, all the fun and charm of Dead Rising, and it's $55 cheaper than every nominee.
Lot more bang for a lot less buck.
I played the demo the other day and found the gameplay about ten times as boring as what I expected. And I didn't expect much.
I played the trial too, and yeah, the trail SUCKED. Lasted about 5 minutes and it didn't tell you where it ended. Bad representation. The first 5 mins are not enough, really.

Going with Mass Effect 2. It wasn't perfect, but it was better than anything else I played that came out this year. If New Vegas had a few less bugs... I'd have picked that though.

Either Bayonetta or Vanquish.

Leaning towards Bayonetta at the moment.
Bah, by the time I got to this page of the topic, I thought I might make it to be the first person to mention Bayonetta. Ah well.

But yeh, it's probably going to be Bayonetta for me. It's the one game out of all the games I've picked up this year that I find myself really wanting to go back to, without the added draw of DLC. That, and it's just plain fun.

There may also be some lessons in there for the folks at Lionhead when they make the inevitable Fable IV. See people, it is possible for a game to feature combat that can be either simple or surprisingly complex, while still remaining intuitive.

I'd only be kidding myself if I didn't give Mass Effect 2 and Red Dead Redemption an honourable mention, however.
