I like WoW a lot, play a couple of other MMOs, and know when to stop playing (both for the day, and altogether). I'm not playing any MMOs currently.

All of that is rather ironic, because I have essentially no social life. Their addictive nature is, to understate it, greatly exaggerated.

I agree with you. I find MMOs dull, pointless wastes of time that provide a few seconds of cheap entertainment followed by a couple hours of monotony. The storyline never advances (special rage directed at WoW for ruining the otherwise pretty decent Warcraft storyline), the fourth wall is constantly being broken by the other players and even the game itself, what with its instances and email service and interface clogging up the screen...I might, might, play World of Warcraft a couple of times a month if there was no subscription fee. The only thing I enjoy in MMOs is the exploration, and WoW is one of the few that actually has an interesting world to explore. However, the way it stands, I have no love for it or any other Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Overlong Acronym.

World of Warcraft is an excellent game, but people who get addicted have problems above and beyond the game. Maybe your brother has a problem with your family? Maybe he's a teenager?

Ideally, playing a game before commenting on it is just good manners.

I harbour no negative feelings toward MMO's at all - I have friends who play WoW, and they really enjoy it, so I say good for them. I've never played WoW, largely because, knowing myself, I'd probably disappear from the world if I did; I say this because I was hooked on freaking Runescape for a while - I'm a rather patient person, so I can grind for hours. Still, I avoid them because I know there are much better games out there which are far better wastes of time.

I've been playing World of Warcraft for a few years now and I haven't become anti-social because of it.

But I'm a freshman in highschool, so I get all the social activity I need at school....

First off, blaming MMO's for addicting people is like blaming cigarettes when people start smoking these days. Actually, more like blaming coffee for addicting people, cause it's not like MMO's make your brain yell at you if you don't get your fix. I do play them sometimes, and the massive expansive ones are fun. Annoyingly, the only free MMO I've been able to find is Runescape, but the combat is so retarded it's not worth it. But it DOES have crafting, mining, fishing and cooking and other shit that I've forgotten about. Point is, lots of skills and specialties and, unlike WoW, free. :) Anyone know a game like that? Or at least one where you just have to pay for the game, like Guild Wars. Once, and you own the game.

i don't think the subscription is a huge deal if that's all you play, i used to play world of warcraft and i had a lot of fun with it especially once more of my friends got into it, and it does not kill social lives, it really matter on how the person manages there time. the reason i quit wow was because i got bored of it, you can only do so much raiding, i also don't think my mmo days are behind me yet...yay for swtor.

but it really depends on the person, i mean if they would rather stay at home and raid then chill with some friends then they are anti social weridos. if they would rather spend time with friends then there just like any normal gamer.

edit: also i think having a school or work life that requires social activity you wont be anti social, its just your choice of game

The only online game I have ever wanted to play for extended periods of time was Monster Hunter.

MMO's in my opinion are either too heavy on the grind, too expensive to upkeep, or try to sucker punch you with microtransaction, (its why I won't play Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine!).

The "free" ones could be better if handled differently.
Instead of microtransaction, I would prefer them to make a "core" game, where its free to play, and then enhance it with expansions. If I enjoyed the core game enough, I wouldn't mind paying for a good expansion.
(They could just release regular expansions, (every few months-ish), and overhaul the overall game when it was necessary)

In essence, scrap microtransaction on everything, release stuff in nice big meaty chunks.

But thats only a pipe dream!

World of warcraft is boring. MMORPGs have been made on the frame of world of warcraft for ages. lately games are changing with new releases such as huxley and Mabinogi heroes changing the MMORPG spectrum from being dull slow and boring to being an experience in which both twitch and RPG gamers are rewarded.

My favorite is
Ace Online

Another honorable mention is Planetside. I personally hate games that are based of world of warcraft. yet i love world of warcraft my self. they got it perfect once, you cant change that, now go ahead and get creative... stop making clone after clone after clone with wings (AION) after clone.

Mever played one I must say, but i absolutely resent paying for something after i've already bought it. What they should do is make it free, but every year release an expansion which needs to be bought to continue playing.

I refuse to get into it for fear that I will leave myself broke.

There is nothing more unattractive then a broke lvl 55 elf.

Today I got into a heated argument with my younger brother who, two weeks ago, went out and bought World of Warcraft, all the expansions and a subscription. The amount of time me and my family have seen him since then till now probably accumulates to about 5 minutes.

I personally hate World of Warcraft, and MMORPG's in general. They are the most addicting game types, often reducing the players social activity in real life. An example is one of my mates often chooses his MMO over spending time hanging out with us. Now my own brother is also becoming like this.

What do you think of MMORPG's, World of Warcraft and the rest of them?

I play Guild Wars, I paid the initial price. Then there was no monthly fee, the next 6 months, they released another one, i bought that and added it to my account, no monthly fee, 6 months aftr that, the same thing, and then once more. No monthly fee, still good gaming. :D

I love Guild wars but am on a bit of a break at the moment. It's heaps of fun but nothing I'd reccommend getting into now, the game is on it's way out. I would however, reccomend getting Guild Wars 2, as it will have the same fee schedule (i.e. none).

Doesnt anyone know that most MMORPGS on the market now are acctually FREE? ofcourse people who are willing to put cash in the game become gods within days and you need to grind your ass a bit harder to get there. they are still free and i have never had to put a cent into them to have fun.

Gawd let me list a few:

Rappelz

Its a grind fest just like WoW but its free and it has regular expansions Free to play. dough double Experience rate costs you a dollar a day.

Planet Side

200 Vs 200 Vs 200 persistent world FPS fun!

Battle Forge

its an MMORTS and card game hybrid. you buy cards and you use them as monsters in a full 3D battle field. NO subscription

If you where really looking for them you would find them. Koreans make MMOS constantly and they send over to this side games that they think might be suitable for the public. thus explaining why we always get damned WoW clones.
