I never played the NES Metal Gear games, MGS 1 was my first foray into the series and I absolutely loved it. The whole stealth approach was new to me, and so was hiding in a box. I loved the different characters, and innovations the game brought. The first time I fought Psycho Mantis I freaked out when I thought my tv died at the worst possible time ever, and the whole reading my memory card thing blew my mind. Playing through to get the bandanna and suit was awesome, and it got me hooked to the series. Let's not talk about Big Boss rank though. Not to mention those after credits left you wanting more....

MGS 2 Sons of Liberty had me initially stoked, playing the tanker scene demo got me incredibly hyped. Until I got the game and played as Raiden. I remember my initial reaction of " What the..." and just waiting for the punchline which never came. I did get over that though, and ended up enjoying the game. Not quite up to MGS 1, but enjoyed it nonetheless. And my "what in tarnation is la le li lo lu" reaction....damn you after credits!

MGS 3 Snake Eater may be my favorite because I was soooo curious to Big Boss' origin story. I also liked the whole splint yourself/kill snakes to recover mechanic, although it did get cumbersome after a while. It featured one of my favorite fights ( curse you The End ) and I loved the end with The Boss. I actually tried to see if there was a way to to avoid it, and actually hated myself when I had to do what was meant to happen.

MGS 4 was the reason I bought a PS4. I am normally an early adapter, but not with the PS3/Xbox 360 generation, I just loved my PS2 ( and the games and Gamecube) that much. However, Metal gear Solid 4 was a system seller for me. However, it was too much of an interactive movie for me to say it is a favorite. Do not get me wrong, I loved the cutscenes ( albeit some were way too long) and the graphics were amazing, and the music were astounding. I just wished there was a better balance of gameplay and exposition. Luckily, I am a lore/story kind of guy so I was ok with it ( frankly, the whole Big Mama bit was a favorite of mine, especially the motorcycle part) . I can see, though, how that would put people off and I don't blame them. Ultimately, I just wanted closure and the last 2 hours of the game made it worth it ( I mean come on, an old battleship going up against a Space Battleship Yamato is just awesome for me, and the microwave scene had my heart pounding. The 30 min(?) epilogue may seem long, but I did not notice as I was too busy watching it. Sadly, this is the one game I did not replay through, and that probably speaks volumes.

All in all, I love 1 - 4, but that is probably the end for me. I was satisfied with how it ended ( and was glad I did not see Snake die, even though we know he does) and i is probably why I am not hyped at all about Phantom Pain. Perhaps when it is close to release.

I loved the series.

I do find the storylines to be a little off, but in that quirky Japanese way that I can more-or-less tolerate.

The controls can be frustrating at times, nothing worse than a perfectly laid plan being spoiled because I only have two thumbs.

MGS 1 was one of the best games of my teen years, and, along with Final Fantasy 7 it gets the occasional play when I dust off my PS1.

MGS 2 made little to no sense in terms of story, but I enjoyed the gameplay nonetheless - I've recently played through it again in the HD collection and the characters continue to be utter tonk, but it was an enjoyable playthrough.

MGS 3 was, in my opinion, the pinnacle of the series - I enjoyed the story, the bosses were some of my favourites in all of video games, and the gameplay felt more 'stealthy' than any previous entry - sneaking though the jungle, utilising camouflage, I enjoyed it thoroughly.

MGS 4 was something of a disappointment though... The balance of cutscenes to gameplay was too far skewed towards the former for it to be truly an enjoyable experience.

I am a longtime-born-again Metal Gear fan.
I've always liked the series' odd approach to social commentary. I've been with the series since the 2nd game, the only title that disappointed me was MGS4 (for a lot of reasons).

It's really surprising (and kind of saddening) to see how many people seem to think MGS2's story is bad or makes no sense. The story makes perfect sense and went through A LOT of revisions. It's not the end-all masterpiece of videogames, but it is creative.

MGS1 - 80's action movie.
MGS2 - Meta-commentary on self and being.
MGS3 - Bond movie.
MGS4 - complete mess.
Metal Gear Rising Revengeance - 80's action movie turned up to 11.

I like it. An action-stealth franchise that acknowledges how cheesy and over-the-top it is while still being a somewhat serious and "mature" approach to meaningful themes. My favorite was Peacewalker on the PSP. The story was good and the recruitment system was addicting. Plus, beating the game with those painful controls felt like an accomplishment.

The cutscenes almost always drag after a while. Do we need to have an hour-long exposition of every character and every piece of lore in every cutscene? Nope.
