Wow, people talking about skill and such in reference to smash bros? lol.
Uh, playing smash even remotely competitively is extremely skillful.
Just to execute stuff this is what is required in melee:

All three games have a large number of options, which each of those options beating a unique set of the opponent's options.
And the amount of reads/attempted reads per minute in both is staggering, especially because of the lack of true combos in both games (as in, there are few, not none), which means each link requires a read to continue.
Yea, not really though. It is amusing to me to hear people talk about this game like its something more than the fighting game version of mario party...
Listen, I understand you've probably invested tons of time trying to hone "techniques" for this game but the truth of the matter is that this game suffers more than any fighter out there with the button masher syndrome. I can only see spending time tryin to build "skill" (lol) at this game as a complete waste of time because I haven't seen a fighting game that relies less on the player having actual talent than brawl. Its an irrelevant game on an irrelevant console.
See, there are lots of issues you can bring up with Brawl, especially relative to it's more competitive older brother, but when you bring up button mashing that just means that you have no CLUE what you're talking about.
Only third strike is more resistant to button mashing as an effective strategy (at high levels of play, if you're playing all items on high on port town it's gonna be a lot more effective because so much is happening that distracts from proper punishment).
1. Freedom of movement, because the stages are extremely expansive and you have the ability to play a strong aerial game, it's difficult for the opponent to put you in a situation where you have to actually deal with their mashing, instead you can just wait for them to attack, then attack from one of the angles they can't cover.
2. Low shieldstun, which means that if you hit your opponent's shield haphazardly he will punish you, almost nothing is safe on shield and those that are (minus a few very rare things like jigg's backair) have to be spaced perfectly, otherwise they're not safe.
And then you have things that are common to essentially every fighting game, namely spacing and reading. Frankly sonic can punish a whiffed attack from almost the entire length of final d away.
Melee's even better in that regard, while it has more safe moves, it's movement options are so much more powerful.
So frankly, unless you actually know what you're talking about and understand the mechanics of the game, don't presume to comment how worthy it is of competitive play. The fact that you picked the most laughable object (probably because yahtzee said it about all fighting games, which was wrong anyway) just illustrates how irrationally opposed to it you are. But feel free to attempt to win via button mashing against for example either of these guys http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDm-rq8gzcI
If you want a real objection, talk about how unbalanced it is.
