The SNES game Earthbound (Mother 2 in Japan) uses small samples in its music, as well as regular SNES midi-or-whatever music. For example, the song that plays when a player starts a game and enters names and favorite foods and stuff? That includes a tiny sample of the Liberty Bell March by John Philip Souza, more commonly known as the Monty Python's Flying Circus Theme.
More trivial, however, is the fact that the Moonside level music includes a tiny, slowed-down sample of the introductory keyboard notes and drum-click sounds of the song "Keep On Laughin'" by Ric Ocasek, former lead singer of the Cars. This was the first song on his second solo CD, "This Side of Paradise".
Don't believe me? You can hear a snippet of the beginning of the song at Amazon, here:

And the "Moonside Swing" song is on Starmen.net at: http://starmen.net/mother2/music/099-%20Earthbound%20-%20Moonside%20Swing.mp3
I only discovered this because I played Earthbound back in about 1995 while listening to that very album - on tape, no less.
And yes, the Ric Ocasek album was first (1985, Earthbound came out in 1994 or so...)
