Some of the original designs for the character of Kratos from God of War included "sidekicks", such as a small dog or a baby that he carried on his back.

It was actually Puck-Man with a 'K'. which was worse in terms of possible vandalism...

The Sega Genesis and SNES both had a modem that allowed a few games very limited online play.

Microsoft Excel '97 had a flight simulator easter egg.

Double Dragon one of the grand daddies of beat em ups is actually not an original title. Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun (or Renegade as it's known as in the west) was it's predecessor with many of the same familiar gameplay elements. This game is also the predecessor of several other games with similar characters including river city ransom and Nintendo World Cup.

Also the Playstation 1 was the result of an angry Sony after Nintendo bailed out of a deal with them at the last minute. This was because Sony owned the rights to the CD technology so Nintendo felt the deal would not be in their best interests in terms of any profit shares!

It wasn't so much out of anger but rather Sony had put so much resources into the project, it would have been a waste not to do something with a gaming device.

and speaking of the PS1, Sony made a consumer grade PS1 dev kit called the "Net Yaroze."

All the polygon models in Mortal Kombat 4 are 1 sided.

Only the side visible to the player is rendered to keep the framerate up, and to squeeze better graphics out of inferior hardware.

[li]Halo 3 and Source Engine (Half Life 2, Team Fortress 2, Portal etc.) both use Havok Physics engine, thus they have the exact same simulation software.[/li]
[li]Mario Bros. For the NES is still the worlds best selling (sold rather) video game[/li]

Didn't I read somewhere that Half Life 1 is built off an expanded version of the Quake 1 engine?

The creator of the Earthbound Series is NOT a career game designer.

The creative director of FFXII had a nervous breakdown during production, forcing a delay of several years while his replacements tried to pick up the pieces.

Tri-Crescendo is made up of ex-Tri Ace employees.

This also caused the Nintendo-Squaresoft rift, as Square wasn't able to do what they wanted with Cartridge Technology.

Actually there's some pretty decent games made with it.

Nintendo actually got a patent for "video game insanity" as used in Eternal Darkness.

The SNES game Earthbound (Mother 2 in Japan) uses small samples in its music, as well as regular SNES midi-or-whatever music. For example, the song that plays when a player starts a game and enters names and favorite foods and stuff? That includes a tiny sample of the Liberty Bell March by John Philip Souza, more commonly known as the Monty Python's Flying Circus Theme.

More trivial, however, is the fact that the Moonside level music includes a tiny, slowed-down sample of the introductory keyboard notes and drum-click sounds of the song "Keep On Laughin'" by Ric Ocasek, former lead singer of the Cars. This was the first song on his second solo CD, "This Side of Paradise".

Don't believe me? You can hear a snippet of the beginning of the song at Amazon, here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VWSGDA/ref=dm_mu_dp_trk1?ie=UTF8&qid=1211925656&sr=8-1

And the "Moonside Swing" song is on Starmen.net at: http://starmen.net/mother2/music/099-%20Earthbound%20-%20Moonside%20Swing.mp3

I only discovered this because I played Earthbound back in about 1995 while listening to that very album - on tape, no less.

And yes, the Ric Ocasek album was first (1985, Earthbound came out in 1994 or so...)

My favorite bits of "trivia" are the in-game things that everyone knows yet still believes are little known facts.

My favorite when I was younger was the whole "Metal Man dies with one shot of his own blade." I must've heard that about ten thousand times, each time from someone who was convinced that only they and Capcom knew this great secret.
