If you ask me, I think it happened at around the second or third itteration where they changed practically nothing, basically making it a cash grab. No game designed from the ground up can be released yearly. I mean, look at sports games and you'll see what I mean.
Yeah pretty much. It's the same reason I hate FIFA and Pro Evo games, they're fun but it's rare to see anything new and year after year they release the same game in a new package.

CoD has been doing it only...worse. That pisses me off. Then there are the fanboys who jump up and down and proclaim it teh gratest ting evar. They annoy.

And the whole because of CoD better games are suffering but that's not really CoD's fault, just it's demented fanbase.

CoD = Cliche, milked dry, and Den of Trolls

The way I see it gamers are experienceing another split. We have your "CoD"/hardcore/troll gamers on the left and your "Non-CoD"/causal/"mature" gamers on the right. Those who see games are toys and other who see games as art. I doubt I have many kin who share my vision that one day games might be respectable, but w/e :p .

P.S. I have not thing about CoD personally I just hate the ppl who play it. Same deal with DotA for those of you who know what that is, great game, just horrible gamers.
There is hardly an even split when it comes to any large playerbase.
what's funny is I've seen more trolls/haters on the Escapist than I have in CoD. Both on PSN and Live.

The stereotype that CoD players are all 12 year olds screaming into the mic is just as much a myth as any stereotype about gamers.

anyone can be REALLY good at it
Really? how is it that there are some players that are bad and some players that are good? have you even played this game?

And how is this any different from all the other twitchy-reflex shooters of the past like Quake, Unreal Tournament and Counter-strike?

Call of Duty (competitive multiplayer) is a Sport, pretending to be a game. Worse still, it succeeded (being the highest grossing franchise in gaming, and all). It threatens to destroy values the gaming community has held dear for decades(complexity, depth, challenge, attention to detail.etc.), and that corners us. And as the saying goes. "A Cornered Animal Is A Dangerous Animal".
We have never held these values, mindless shooters have been popular since FOREVER, fuck. How can you not know about this? 90% of video-games are shit, the 10% is what we remember and this ratio has not changed in anyway.

There comes a day in every boy's life where he must learn about the travesty that is Modern Warfare 2. You'll know when your older, son. Now go back to playing with your new fangled Mortal Kombat and Halo: Reach. Go on, shoo, let daddy enjoy his Morrowind.

Dude, CoD is not Halo or CSS... You probably dont do as well in Halo because twitch based shooting suits you better. As for the average Halo player being better than the average CoD player, I am not even going to bother laughing at that. They have exactly the same player base, exactly the same target audience. How the hell you can even compare Battlefield and Counter Strike to Call Of Duty is beyond me. Saying that you do better in one than in the other means nothing, except that YOU are better at that game and not so good at Battlefield. I rape face on a daily basis in Bad Company 2. When I play CoD, I get raped and end up ragequitting sometime into the game. Does that mean Bad Company 2 is an easy game? Naw. Just means personally, im better at that one.

If you can hold a 4 k/d in your combat record you are clearly top cut, by the way, and I suggest you get into MLG. I can barely hold my 1.6 personally.
Ehh I suppose. Maybe I just don't like to give myself credit :p I just find it hard to believe I'm so much better "naturally" at CoD compared to Halo that I'm decidedly middling in one, especially given that I don't exactly rack up high scores. It's just that in CoD it's frequent enough that I don't feel like I've really achieved anything - if I play FFA/TDM and get a Blackbird I'm pretty much guaranteed to get dogs afterwards, and then my score is gonna massively gazzump everyone elses kinda by default, without me being that much better than everyone else.

I... don't really know what we're arguing here. Is it really that offensive to you to suggest that CoD is an easy(/ier) game to play? :/

For the record I can't do anything like "hold" a 4.00 KD, although I have had some nights where I've pulled a couple of great games out - my average is 1.8-1.9ish.

Ever since the multiplayer became synonymous with loud, obnoxious, impatient children. It's a common insult in Arma 2.

I figured it became an insult some time during MW2's year, I don't know for sure.

When ever game was an unadulterated cash grab. Sort of like how Dragon age 2 pissed a lot of people off but CoD has done it for like the last 4 games so it's a bit more of a volatile reaction.
This. With that said, I'd say it became and insult after MW2. COD4 was one hell of a great game and W@W was alright.

The reason it is in insult is solely popularity. It represents a game that people play exclusively because they are to closed minded to play other games. So yeah its a stereotype that CoD players only play CoD, therefore can't handle hard or artsy games. The irony is those using it as an insult are closed minded.

Seriosuly? I would say when every publisher and his mother wanted to clone it to make money off ot it thus leading to an endless string of modern FPS games with the same plot, same heroes, same locales, AND SAM MECHANICS!
You know what FPS's where called before the acronym became popular? Doom-clones...

And Delta Force was one of teh first games that had CoD's type of gameplay as i recall... actually i'm pretty sure the Delta Force that came out a few months before the first CoD had a lot of gameplay elements that are still in CoD right now...

For some time now, I have encountered this argument, and in various forums. Anytime someone talks about a game in a negative light, the fanboys and girls use this retort as their shield and sword:

"go bak 2 call uv dooty nub" or some variant to that.

If I complain about the Witcher 2 not having a proper tutorial, someone will inevitably tell me to go back to Call of Duty. It's either that or Dragon Age 2 is mentioned, as both games are made for the ritalin-popping and/or drunken frat boy masses due to their simplistic gameplay.
I am a PC gamer, never played witcher, however from what I heard it DOES need a proper tutorial. Insults are not necessary on difference of opinion.

I would say that it's because CoD became massively popular when Modern Warfare dropped. Now every company and their mom (EA/BioWare being the most notable) wants to have their "audience", which in turns making games more like CoD, which in turn...

You know what, I have no idea where I'm going with this. I'm just gonna shut up and do more achievement grinding in Prototype.
As far as I know, they only make RPG's. Fair enough, their RPG's are some of the best ever created (looking at you KotOR), but the RPG and FPS markets are radically separated.

RTFM predates the current gen of consoles by a mile...

And yet some of the people behind Dragon Age 2 straight up said that they want CoD's audience... man, that was a sad day, and frankly explained perfectly what went wrong with DA2.

Personally I see that as more of an insult to the player rather than the game. Yes, COD is simple, but that statement is saying to the receiver that he/she can't comprehend whatever game they're in, so because of that they should go back to COD. The statement is empowering the user while decrementing the receiver. It's like the ultimate insult. As for me and COD, I actually like the first two games. They're like Half-Life 2 but with the setting of WWII and they weren't completely non-stop experiences. As for more recent ones...well, I haven't played them. But I can see why people dislike them (mostly because of the community).
