See i don't think anyone really hates it, they just don't like to fit in so everyone goes all batshit crazy on the poor game because it's popular and there isn't alot of thinking involved in playing the game.

*cough cough*

This is truth, this is not my opinion this is fact.

COD has become such an affront to the intelligent gamer that i would rather have my eyeballs pulled out, than be made to sit through another COD game. COD 4 changed the norm a bit by setting itself in the modern day which was nice after COD 2 and 3. COD WAW was a step back to WW2 which was fine, zombie mode was a terrible idea though.

But then we have, Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops ( or Not quiet as modern as modern warfare but but still pretty modern, modern warfare), and the other day i saw an advert for MW3 and just though oh god not again.

The games are by no means bad but they change so little its insulting for the price of a full game, each new games is at best an expansion of the game before, with piss short badly written story, new maps, the same guns with 1 or 2 new ones and the exact same game types, game play, maps, level system, weapon customization and a tiny improvement in graphics. All things which could be done by a competant modder with the construction kit ( G.E.C.K for fallout, DA toolset for dragon age)

You can even say its to continue an "epic story", as the story on all the games has been SHIT. i don't even know why they have a single player mode on them there all about the multi-player, which is fun the first time, but when its 3 games down the line and its still the same is just retarded.

Look at it this way take our the tacky single player campaign, and what each game boils down to is a few new guns and some new maps. Thats it.

Yet people will buy all of the games every year without fail. I had MW1 and borrowed the rest of a friend and i thought why the hell did he buy all these games when there basically the same game.

I hate the later COD games, the publishers are money grabbing releasing the same game year after year, anyone who tries to argue this point is clearly brainwashed and need help. Even my friend who buys all the games can admit that they have about as much innovation as grey paste.

Edit - also im not some kind of hipster who hates mainstream games, but i like my game developers to at least try to add something new with each release.

I love COD so I would take that insult as a suggestion and inquire which one of the series they would suggest for me to play.

For some time now, I have encountered this argument, and in various forums. Anytime someone talks about a game in a negative light, the fanboys and girls use this retort as their shield and sword:

"go bak 2 call uv dooty nub" or some variant to that.

If I complain about the Witcher 2 not having a proper tutorial, someone will inevitably tell me to go back to Call of Duty. It's either that or Dragon Age 2 is mentioned, as both games are made for the ritalin-popping and/or drunken frat boy masses due to their simplistic gameplay.
It has become an insult when people who only play cod start bragging hot shit about K:D ratio. I have 3 such people at my work.

This is nothing new, really. World of WarCraft, Halo, and Gears of War have all dealt with it too.

Eventually something new will come out and become very popular, then it will attract all of the hate away from CoD just like CoD did with everything else. I can pretty much guarantee that.
I agree with Disco Stu Tuesday Night Fever. This kind of thing is as inevitable as the bloody tides.

It became an insult when it became popular, because as we all know when anything is popular that means it's terrible and is ruining the gaming industry. [/sarcasm]

In the end I take CoD haters with a grain of salt. I personally find all of the CoD games to be quite fun and enjoyable, even if they are pretty much the same thing each year and aren't the epitome of gaming in any way. They're fun and provide me with hours of enjoyment, and that's all I give a damn about in the end.

Umm...mind explaining that again? Because I didn't get whatever you were trying to say. =/
They think the game is better then it is (because it's fun enough to them) and when someone says it's not they feel like the other person insulted the game...

Actually, with DA2, the composer let slip that the unexpected popularity prompted the big-wigs to make a sequel to capitalize on it. It didn't really work as players from all around completely saw through the stitching and only made the rips larger.

Addendum: BioWare definitely said they "wanted CoD's audience" though. Whatever that meant, who knows? There's an article floating around here about it somewhere...
Yeah, my point was that they wanted to make a sequel that's easier to get into and has more BOOM EXPLOSION moments... (their words where "push a button and something awesome happens").

An actual sequel with some fine tuning was wanted by all... but that's not what they gave us...

It didn't, people are just stupid.
And so they play CoD because it's easier then playing something that required more thinking... :p

Of course that's true of all FPS... and other genres that are more about reflexes then thinking. And when ppl tell you to go back to it they're implying you're too stupid for anything else...

COD is not bad at all. It is the inherent copycat BS the rest of the industry undergoes when a series is popular that is bad. But they all have to make money right? Blame capitalism?

I personally think the insult is people that by the game every year for a shitty rehash.

COD itself is a crappy solo and decent multi fps. With a zombie mode that is fun for a few hours then repetitive as shit.

The reason why Call of Duty is used as a insult and looked down upon, is because a large number of COD players tend to see it as superior to EVERY shooter out there. I personally have seen people who will try and win a game argument by simply repeating that COD is better, while someone who enjoys Battlefield games or others will instead give a reason as to why they PERSONALLY think the game is better (While some COD gamers will just say that COD just IS better regardless of personal choice).

I PERSONALLY like playing 'Homefront' or 'Battlefield: Bad Company 2'. Though about 70% of the time I mention those games to COD gamers, I am seeing insults directed towards my game choices or towards myself for playing the games.

Since it became crap. OOOOOOOO I WENT THERE.

OT: Probably because there's so many jackasses on Xbox Live and blah de blah, also because it's simple to pick up and play, with relatively little strategy involved at the basic level. Of course, there is more in-depthness to it and you build up skill over time, but it's nowhere near the level of what games like Counter Strike demanded, let alone the old UT and Quake games.

COD became an insult in my eyes the day I saw ironsight aiming in Serious Sam...

COD isn't the only game with this, but they damn well made it the standard and Serious Sam should have been really above that...

I think after modern warfare, when they started coming out with one every year, it kind of became a joke.

It didn't become an insult. It just became popular.
Most gamers are nerds, there's no real two ways around that. And most nerds aren't/weren't very "popular" in high school. So, they are more prone to regect main-stream/popular things, because they represent the "popular crowd" in high school.

Also its not very complicated, the multiplayer is filled with idiots (no insult to people who play CoD), and the game skimps on the campaign.

I enjoy CoD. I play the campaign enough to get most of the achievements, and I play online long enough to max out my level (screw prestige!). Then I move on. Only to come back when playing with friends, or I want to mop up the last achievements.
This and the whole "Man, 99% of the world is full of mindless idiots that I am forced to live with" mindset

dont get me wrong cod is a good game and all but it sort of represents alot of things wrong with the game industry.

its super popular but each game is basically a reskined cash grab, with no real innovation or change to gameplay.
