If the people who owned the series had some balls to come up with new franchises, new names for new games, and stick with rpgs, they would be better received by the public. That and they should stay far away from movies, as none made were ever successful.
Squares got plenty of different franchises, unfortunately they get overshadowed by their behemoth money maker. Somehow I think the FF stories though would be better if Horonobu Sakaguchi was still writing them, ya know...the guy that freaking wrote half of them along with a ton of squares other brilliant games, shame he left.

Honestly I think they should leave that game and series alone. It was so well done that no sequel would possibly live up to the originals standards, I am a die hard trigger fan and I am far to rigid on the subject when it comes to that game. Cross was good but there are just some games that should be left to their glory and not spoiled, I mean look at the FF7 compilation, Crisis Core is the only good that has come out of it. Glad to see another Parasite Eve game on the way though.

Oh? This is news to me. I only heard of Nobuo Uematsu giving up on the Final Fantasy series (and leaving Square) after a disagreement with the company. Brilliant composer, he is.

And I know Square has other games; perhaps what I said was indeed a bit of an over-exaggeration (especially considering they have been gradually consuming other companies over the last few years). However all I see these days is Final Fantasy this or Final Fantasy that. Games completely unrelated to the series are labeled after it. I believe a fighter was recently announced with the Final Fantasy name. The more they do this, the more the games look watered down and not given nearly as much care as they were a decade ago. It also appears to alienate a certain percentage of people who are still a fan of jrpgs.

A better way to explain this is to look at the past: The first eight or so Final Fantasies were released one game at a time. Once the series became insanely popular and everyone jumped on the bandwagon after seven, they started gradually opening the flood gate. Now it feels like a Final Fantasy is being released every month.

I don't believe they should mess with Chrono Trigger. They would have to come up with something either as good or better than the gem. Anything less would tarnish the name. (The only reason Chrono Cross failed to hurt Chrono Trigger was because it was a partial remake of a famous text adventure and not a straight sequel.)

However I would not mind seeing another game with a similar feel to Chrono Trigger. Not taking the name of it, nor the universe, but learning a lesson from and taking example of the gem. What a joy it would be to loose myself in another universe with the older animation style and a similar game play.

Yea I can understand where your coming from and to an extent I have to agree. I DO find it rather saddening when most of their care goes into the FF games and their OTHER games don't receive as much attention or work put into them. I have heard very mixed views on Last Remnant which is a square game I have been eagerly looking forward to try but it's just...I dunno. People know that when they get a game with Final Fantasy in the name, it's at least some assurance of quality and so FF has become a real safe card for the company. Their spinoffs are rather hit and miss yea, the only ones I have enjoyed are Tactics: War of the Lions and Crisis Core, and soon will be enjoying Dissidia (the FF fighter you mentioned) as I have seen enough of that game to KNOW its good.

I also do have to agree with you in that the quality of the games may have gone down a bit since it rise to fame after 7. When FF still had it's cult status, each game was gold. Oh well one can only expect SOME degradation to a series or company as 20 rather successful years, foolish to think a 20 year old franchise would not have one crap game in it's long run.

8, 9, 10, 10-2 were all ridiculous and not near as much fun as I had hoped. 7 was kinda weird and just too long to be the greatness it claims, but it was okay. I did actually find 12 to be bit of fresh air in a very stagnant series.

11 and 12 personally, i like to slow thinks down and think in a fight instead of trying to go through hundreds of menus while still having my balls chopped off.

Final Fantasy VIII was such a complete disaster on every conceivable level that not only did it kill Final Fantasy for me (though I'll admit I did love FF9 but only because it was such a glaring exception to the genre trend at that point), it (along with Xenogears and Star Ocean 2) killed the entire JRPG genre for me. I bought a gaming PC in 2000 and never seriously considered looking back. Consoles are now strictly for sports and racing.

I don't see why everyone hates XII so much.
The story was a little convoluted, but I would hardly call it weak or cliched.
The battle system was, in my opinion, basically the same as the ATB system (assuming you've deactived the gambits which were, let's be honest, absolutely rubbish in a boss battle, and if you're fighting a number of different enemies) except everyone moves around a bit more.
The Star Wars-esque air battles weren't 'bad' per se; if every epic air battle was considered a rip-off of Star Wars, then how are we ever going to find anything exciting that's completely original? There's only so many ways to portray a concept without someone shouting plagiarism.
It was interesting to portray the story from Vaan's point of view, but I think it also gave the player a simply unbiased view of Ashe's dilemmas throughout the story. The only character I really have trouble with is Penelo. I mean, what was the point to her being there? As far as I can tell, she basically only joined because she wanted an adventure. I mean, wanting a little excitement is fair enough, but why are 'we' supposed to care?
And one other thing. I still haven;t quite worked out how Fran manages to walk across an entire continent wearing high heels.
Otherwise I found it completely and utterly enjoyable.

IX was the last one I really liked but I still have hopes for the franchise.

Final Fantasy isn't dead to me. How can any series die when it's not really a true series? Almost all of the games are self-contained within their own world, so each one has no bearing on the next. You can not like some of the games, and like others. Personally I didn't like 9 all that much, but I liked 10 and 12.

Because people are idiots, Andronicus. They see one thing, draw fifteen conclusions, and declare the game horrible without ever playing it [Or finishing it]. Most people in the western countries just see 'Final Fantasy' and say 'Ugh, it's a JRPG, it must suck.' Those that don't instantly do that, see it either as a depart from the norm, therefore sucky, or read into things more than they should and form an unreasonable hatred.

That and there is very little appreciation for good storytelling these days.

Well for me it's kinda hard to not want a Chrono series game because the two released were just so damn good. Yeah it's hard to really say "how are they going to top the first two, they were so damn good it's hard to improve upon them."..

and there's that to consider but there's also ... "well, they're 2 for 2, 2 games, both excellent, how can they go wrong when they're on a roll?"

Hard to decide

i didn't think much of ff10, but i at least played it through to the end, but then they brought out ff10-2, and i looked at and it and thought "nah", and i havn't bothered since. ff11 by all accounts is bad, ff12 largely has it's existence denied, and i just don't care anymore. the last good one then in my opinion is ff9, which i am actually doing a replay of.
