Even though I think FF3 is an awesome game, I never really got into the series as a whole. Mainly because with every new game in the series, it seemed like a different RPG. Wasn't just an updating of graphics, it was a complete restructering of the system.

Yeah, I prefer the earlier stuff.

I honestly tried to be a fanboy on Final Fantasy. Well, FFX-2 was a very strange experience which proved that from that point the merchandise and fanboy factor was more important than the game itself. But I pulled through.

And then came part 12... well... it had so much potential. I almost drowned in my drool when I heared that the maker of 'Vagrant Story' was on board, I liked the art style and so on... but the plot was the most disappointing, hollow, predictable, uninspired piece of $hit I have ever played in an RPG. And I hated the gameplay. I found even Enchanted Arms more interesting than this.

They made FF11 online only (idiots) and i think its a waste of money to pay monthly for games (apart form xbox live of cause)

Then they made FF12 which was just... meh... so so bad
It had the potential though, THEN they made FF13 Verses PS3 only, again, IDIOTS!!!

that's the only one that caught my interest

The atrocity that was X-2. After 2 fine games that were FFIX and FFX why why why did they go and do that?

Final Fantasy X-2 initially hurt my love of the franchise, although I replayed the previous ones I own a number of times and coincidently after something like five years I played FFX-2 and concede the storyline is awful however I do not hate that game any longer. If you approach with the correct mindset it can be quite entertaining, especially the characters. Amazingly enough there is a plot buried in that nonsense of a story though, if only Square focused more on the Aeons uprising and Shuyin than Yuna in a bikini...

Final Fantasy XI I had little interest in as I dislike MMO for the most part however Final Fantasy XII was the nail in the coffin for me. The game had so much potential, yet fell by the wayside. The characters were interested - with the exception of a few (Vaan), yet saw little to no development. The storyline was intriguing, especially for myself, given my love of medieval/ancient political struggle, yet it had god awful pacing and was often forgotten completely and finally dungeons with lengthened to an unruly degree, turning it into a MMO dungeon crawl with an occasional clip here and there.

The fact Vaan was one of the worst main characters I have seen in quite some time also irritated me. I still cannot get over how often that game explicitly made a point to informing you how utterly useless Vaan and to a lesser extent Penelo were to the game. When one of the first few scenes has characters not even in your party, claiming they are the lead character, you know the actual main is inadequate.

Im an FF7 fanboy im not gonna lie, hell I still play it when I get bored of all these new-generation games I played 8 and it was okay 9 is when i started to lose hope. I achieved more hope at 10 then at 12 I died a little inside, and went back to 7.

At 9. Then it came back to life for a few minutes with 10 then was quickly taken out back and shot in the head with x-2. Has sucked ever since.

Id say 10 as well, graphically the games are beautiful but the stories were often patched together through convaluted and cliche characters and situations. The gameplay was alright, if you enjoy turn based, but theres only so many random encounters you fight before you start wondering if your actually getting anywhere.

What really killed that whole scene for me were Bioware and Bethesda coming up with open sandbox world gaming, and having true choice/change in a gameworld. FF's are all about fighting x number of battles along a very narrow path to finish up a lame story.

I also do have to agree with you in that the quality of the games may have gone down a bit since it rise to fame after 7. When FF still had it's cult status, each game was gold. Oh well one can only expect SOME degradation to a series or company as 20 rather successful years, foolish to think a 20 year old franchise would not have one crap game in it's long run.
Please pardon my far-from-immediate reply.

I'd think after twenty years, the game company should understand what works and what doesn't. It's like they're not even trying anymore. Another thing I noticed, which happened after Square enveloped Enix and fired all but a few of its employees, is that all games veered clear away from plots and focused almost entirely on cut scenes. The old games before the merger were beautiful, afterward all we have seen have been sequels; and every single sequel has been a convoluted repeat of the same, "Walk down a passage, hit a flashily animated cut scene either about an over-enthusiastic boy or a girl with no memories, and repeat" formula. This started with only a few games, and now everyone, including people not even related to Square or Enix, are doing it. It's not working.

In fact, the only series that has recently gotten it right has been Dragon Quest.
