ah yes very realistic being the weapons your carrying around a big laser with which you can shoot a satelite out of space and a nuclear rocket launcher

HUZZAH FOR REALISM

f*ck you people who keep saying ooooooh it is more realistic

as if you have a spartan laser plasma sniper Torque bow or chainsaw shooting gun (Unreal tournament i dunno what it is actually called) in your back pocket.
And when you are walking around with one arm blown off and find a first aid kit your arm suddenly reappears

HUZZAH REALISM
There's a certain level of realism people expect from video games, gravity, air all those sorts of things. We don't expect the game itself to be completely realistic but things like aliens we can suspend our disbelief for whereas carrying an armory in a back pocket can damage the mood. It simply varies issue to issue.

I'm not sure many people like only having the ability to carry two guns at a time, but it is more realistic and easier on the developers.

I prefer carrying fewer weapons. As someone else stated, it applies another tactical choice to the game such as if you decide to pick up a shotgun, you should make sure at longer ranges you have a weapon that is effective.

stop using "realistic" as an excuse. halo is not even close to "real" because you can only carry 2 guns. You only carry two guns in halo because they didn't want a complicated way to switch weapons on a controller. keyboard has numbers and the mouse has a wheel to switch so its not a big deal on pc to have lots of weapons. xbox back then just had the "Y" button.

in short, blame console shooters for the lack of weapon holding. also, the realism is a lie!

I agree with most people on this thread, Halo: CE started it. Even if you could have all weapons with games such as Halo, before you can get them all your usually dead

Aside from being more realistic it makes you have to asses each situation you go into, because you don't when you're going to be able to find another weapon, ect. It basically adds another tactical choice to the game.
That's impossible. I have been quite ensured by the internet that Halo is completely generic, and cannot have possibly originated/popularized anything. You must be thinking of Half-life or Perfect Dark.

ya but for halo you can flip a tank but only carry 2 guns... really?
Actually, it makes sense. It's not the weight of the weapons, it's the storage space and the ability to carry them without them getting in the way. Imagine Master Chief being gunned down because he got stuck in a doorway when his missile launcher and sniper rifle shifted.

Fallout 3, walk around naked and carry nothing but guns, and you are a walking tank, except your health would be pretty vulnerable.

It's good because you have to think about the situation instead of rushing in and switching between 5 different weapons.
Again, depends on the game. Much as I enjoyed Halo the limited weapons didn't make me need to think very much, it just meant I only bothered to pick up two or three of the weapons available in the whole game.
You sir, make a good point.
I forgot to mention that the two weapon limit is very good at forcing teamwork and balancing multiplayer however :)

The limited weapon mechanic also usually prevents weapons from being outdated as you progress through the game. In games with the ability to carry all guns you stop using the earlier ones in favor of the more powerful ones that you get as you progress. It essentially requires the guns to be designed in a way that they can be useful no matter what point in the game you pick them up in. This seems to be the key flaw with limiting weapons, because in most games that use the system the weapons aren't balanced quite well enough and leave you, as others have said, resorting back to the same one or two multipurpose guns throughout the game.

All that aside, I wouldn't fancy trying to get through Serious Sam again using only two guns or so.

Ok, I respect your opinion but still, it doesn't matter whether it's Call of Duty or Halo it's more realistic AND practical to be carrying 2 or maybe 3 guns around at a time instead of a whole bloody weapons depot.

I haven't read every single post so sorry if someone said this.

Who here has ever played Half-Life 2? And who here has ever spent more than 10 seconds switching weapons for one battle because you have all of them in the game at once?

I have for one.
Dante puts his ginormous sword on his back, keeping it there with no supports or holders of any sort, so it is not realistic storage space, or a lack thereof, that keeps us from having more that 2 guns; it is convenience. Having 3-4 guns would be nice, but for now it is 2, because that is easier to swap between.

Regarding games that did it BEFORE Halo, which arguably popularized the mechanic:

- System Shock 2 and Deus Ex both featured graphical "grid" inventories, where weapons were by relative size corresponding to how big they were. It was not limited to 2 weapons, exactly, but you'd end up chosing between having an array of sidearms or 2 big guns or maybe 3 rifles. Think of the Diablo inventory screen, only with firearms.
Both good points but remember that Deus Ex and SS2 were both distinctly FPS/RPGs so the development of character and the management of inventory/ weight were more acceptable than in most of the cited examples, which are games which have flourished most in multi-player incarnations, where micromanaging your inventory in-game would be a good way to get yourself fragged. I think a good compromise would be to allow a certain number of weapon slots (with rifle-sized weapons taking 2 slots) to simulate the bulk and weight considerations of carrying multiple weapons.

You big pansy.

Shotgun / Penetrator / Particle Beam Weapon is the only weapon-loadout allowable.

And can anyone think of a limited weapon set in any game before Rainbow Six (the first one, all the way back in 1998 - btw Delta Force 1 was '98 too but a few months later according to wiki)

it gets to the point where we become so realistic that it's not fun anymore, ie far cry 2

When did only carrying two guns at any time become popular?

...When Link began the protest for lighter equipment and everyone else followed?
