tl;dr
Ok...this was not a feature for realism. That's bollocks. It was simply a way of having console shooters with a simple weapon system. You have no mouse. You have no numbers. It's the only way it can work without something like the MGS holding-r2-and-pausing-the-game thing. Which I did like. The gears system works really well too, with it just being the D-pad. I like that too.
YES!!

One main thing that is CONSTANTLY overlooked for consoles is the D-pad. Come to think of it...what is the D-Pad used for in Killzone 2? Is it even used? Oh yeah, find objective and...um...that's it...

>.> I blame Halo but for me I kind of like the SLIGHTadd of realism to some FPS but sometimes I just want to have a large arsenal and a huge mob of enemies coming at me and use every freaking gun, grenade, blade, and maybe a punch or two. GoW really doesn't count as a FPS so why add realism into something that isn't suppose to be and be about killing gods, demons, people who look at you funny, etc. While on this subject of rpg or fantasy games (whatever you like to call it) Assassin Creeds jumping into a wagon full of hay from the top of a 6 to 7 story building >.> yay I survived lets see if I get it right *hits side of wagon fall over slightly unconscious, guards that were looking for you pop out on no where and start kicking you while you are down* Love to see that happen.

Games like Fallout and Arcanum kinda fall into the limited weapons, while you could carry quite a few weapons in Fallout and Fallout 2 weight was still an issue, you could carry a minigun, health, one back-up weapon and around 500 or so rounds before weight becomes a factor (and that's with Power Armor)F3 is the same way.

You had many weapons in your inventory but you could only switch between two without going into your inventory...which affects AP (action Points), but really two weapons are more than enough..usually i just carried the pistol and a knife through most of the game.

Granted this doesn't exactly fall into what the OP is talking about but i believe it still fits, especially if the character had less than 8 AP...go into your inventory without the "Pack Rat" perk and you basically forfeit your turn.

I think halo made it popular, not sure if was first do do it however.
I know Call of Duty always had that limitation, and the first CoD predates the first HALO

I'm pretty sure Rainbow 6 and R6: Rogue Spear restricted weapons because you had to choose what you were entering the battle with. I think it's fair to say Halo popularized it but Rogue Spear made you choose primary and secondary weapons.

EDIT: I just read a previous post and I think it's fair to say Counter Strike probably popularized the restricted weapon selection. It was available as a mod two years before Halo was released and officially released a little over a year before Halo, I believe. Who knows if CS influenced Halo but CS and Rogue Spear are two games which featured restricted weapons before Halo.

i read an previous post about how someone thought it was done to simplfy the FPS for console controler, which makes alot of sense. 2 weapons only & the nads haveing there own "trigger" instead of being in the weapons inventory certainly keeps things simple & allows combat to flow alot better. (IMHO)

ps: unless bungie say what influenced them (if anything) we can only speculate

I'm disappointed in the MC, I've always been. Seriously, if Kratos can lug around bigass chuncks of magical metal, why can't he carry an extra pistol or somethin' like that?
Badass? Meh.
I've always wondered how he can flip a 66 ton tank on his own but can't hold an smg still while firing. Something's not right.

I actually like the limiting mechanic. It makes things smoother. I'd rather just have to navigate two or three weapons than have to scroll through 20 of them to find the right one.
This is it. Basically since console shooters became popular (HALO), developers had to adjust for the crappy dual analogs by limiting the player to a couple of weapons. Makes perfect sense.

I thought everyone made agility 9 or 10 at the start of the game? (I went 9 since you can increase it later)
