I forgave Darksiders hilarious ripping off of far more popular properties because, in and of itself, it was a very solid action-adventure game.

Also, I find the Zelda comparisons easier to swallow if you just imagine that War is a sixty year old Link, cursed to carry every single item he's ever picked up in a dungeon, and who is now so sick of going on quests for the Hyrulean monarchy that he just murders the fuck out of everything he finds.

When it's batshit insane.

Deadly Premonition.

When it's unique.

Mirror's Edge

When it's just plain weird.

Mr Mosquito.

When it has amazing parts.

Dark Void.

When the gameplay is just fun.

Any of those sengoku or budoka or whatever games where you kill lots of people in china. See I play these games and can't even fucking remember their names! Yet I love playing them!

When it's so bad it's amazing! Like you have to play it because it's a trainwreck. Like outright full on trainwreck and you just can't look away.

Big Rigs.

Saying this would probably get me a lot of hate in some places, but I can "forgive" Sonic 06 while I'm playing as Sonic and Shadow. Silver to a lesser extent, mostly because I'm actually good at the game and I had enough foreknowledge to not suck my first time playing it (while skipping all cutscenes and taking a bathroom break at some point I got through half of Sonic's story in a little under an hour). Now don't get me wrong, I do think it's a bad game, I do think there were some inexcusable mistakes (such as the infamous Wave Ocean line in Shadow's playthrough, link for those who don't know: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=svEuWgN81KY&t=459 ), and I also think the gems shouldn't have been in the game, mostly for how broken the Sky Gem is ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=z7wRkCE5saY&t=612 (I found out the invisible box is literally a box, if you go on top there's an invisible ceiling) http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=-g1qw8VR_tA&t=70 ), so yes by all means it is a bad game. And yes I have played the hell out of Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, I have played Sonic Colors/Colours (just for the Brits here :U) on the Wii and Sonic Generations on the 360, hell I've even dabbled a bit in Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic CD, and I'm sure someone'll be happy to know that I like them, not too picky with the many generations of Sonic as long as it's not the first one, so I'd say I know damn well what a good Sonic game is.

But the only part that made me wanna ragequit was S ranking Sonic's Crisis City on Hard mode, and not even the end of Silver's Dusty Desert on either difficulty gave me any trouble, I cleared the Hard mode Billiard From Hell on my first try. I do get a kick out of Sonic's stages at times and Sonic's Radical Train on Normal and Shadow's Kingdom Valley on Hard are my favorite stages in the game. I can see why so many people hate the game, a lot of the things they hate happened to me too, but overall I had a more positive experience with the 360 version of the game than most people. Notice how I didn't mention the story at all in this little wall. It sucks, as far as the game's concerned it never happened even though the last line of the game doesn't seem to understand how reset buttons work, and overall it's just not worth mentioning.

I can overlook a lot of small flaws, but if there's one or two glaring fuck ups, I just can't look past it.

Case in point for good games: anything from Bethesda, so Fallout and Skyrim as the most recent examples.
They're bugged out the arse, the combat is mediocre at best, and you have little to no influence on the world you traverse, but I still rate them as good because of the sheer scale and exploration and meeting various awesome characters (though moreso in Fallout than Skyrim, but whatever).

Case in point for a bad game: Ni No Kuni.
The visuals are stunning, the music is breathtaking and the combat is engaging, but the way in which the decent story is told is painfully awful in that it treats you like a two year old with cognitive inhibitions. Considering it was touted by many as a return to form for JRPGs, I was very disappointed, since the story is supposed to be the strongest aspect of JRPGs.

I'd say there isn't really a guaranteed formula of forgiveness, but it helps when I am interested in the premise of the game and would like to see more but with improvements. Too Human is my example. It had a horrible control scheme, terrible camera, repetitive gameplay, unbalanced classes and unimaginative enemies. But the plot was interesting to a degree and I want to see more techno-vikings. It was also planned as a trilogy which makes me disappointed that there are two games that will never see the light of day. I hope someone makes a spiritual successor to the franchise, because I want to see more but really don't trust the remnants of Silicon Knights to put out anything good.

Perfect one at the moment: MGR Revengance.
-Environments were are a bit dull, would have thought Platinum learned from Vanquish.
-Story was ok. A lot of the good stuff in the codecs should have been put to cutscene to flesh out the characters.
-Combat could have been DMC4 levels of deep.
-The camera is pretty bad.
-The soft lock-on, the lock-on in general, needed more of a grip to it.

Then the positives happened:
-OMG the OST!!! RULES OF NAAAAATUUUURE!!!!!!!!
-60fps lightning speed crystal clear gameplay! Eat your heart out Ninja Theory!!!
-Those beautiful weapon animations.
-The campy dialogue and twists.
-The bosses, specifically the final boss...

14/10 GOTY.

Lets take for a very well-known game on Xbox360/PS3 and soon to PC: Deadly Premonition.

This game is an example of many negative things have:
The boring driving, the loud sounds, the few enemies types, the f*cking map,the pacing, the outdated graphics. These elements together guarantee a perfect sh*tty game.

However the majority of players had forgiven the game because of the Epic story, the colorful and unique characters, the weirdness of the whole game, The awesome duo York/Zack.

Personally, at some point I gave up because of th ebullsh*ts the game had and I put to the game a 6/10 score. But some others of course will put a higher score.

[/b]So, do you have a game that it have many negative things to talk about, but you forgive it to be a good game for your taste?[/b]
Ah yes.. Deadly Premonitions, it is like something made in another universe. A piece of art that is so .. ugly. And made of smelling stuff. But you can't watch away it is like a car crash into an orphanage where precisely the same day a huge comet plummeted in. And yes its story, character and york/zack really makes it so unbelievable strange. Good times!

Remember VtM:Bloodlines? But you say it is a great game with a great story and great playability and.. remember it before the unofficial patches? Ooooh! Yes that lovely time where crashing to the desktop or hanging up was rather common. I mean it had a great story to offer, great gameplay, interesting characters and you felt that the makers of the game loved the world. A shame about the bugs though, really big manly bugs! Like inviting a 5 feet cockroach on coffee manly.

The point is a good story, interesting characters and interesting gameplay can safe allot.

It is when a game like DNF comes out, technically a game yes.. but will anybody get any pleasure from it. That one thing is shown certain. That lacking a good story, interesting characters and interesting gameplay kills games very quickly.

So lets all hail deadly premonition for being so quirky and odd. And remember to whistle!

When a game is too damn fun for me to hate it. Like, SR3 got rid of a LOT of location variety, but GOD DAMN I GOT TO BE A TRON DRAGON AND SKYDIVE IN A TANK AND MAKE A CHEESY 50'S SCI-FI MOVIE AND USE SUPER POWERS GIVEN TO ME BY AN ENERGY DRINK TO RESCUE A HULK VERSION OF JOHNNY GAT...

*huff huff huff*

Also, I can't hate a sandbox game that gives me an RC gun that lets me hijack cars remotely and run over pedestrians without getting a wanted level.
I like how to some people the over-the-top-ness is a bad thing, and to some people the over-the-top-ness is a glorious thing that needs to be praised.
I fully agree with you. SR3's crazy-ness is a glorious thing.

OT: I guess I gotta whip Mon-Musu Quest out again...
The game's a porn game. It's heavily based on porn, lots and lots of it.
But the story.
The characters.
The gameplay the hghbsndghbsgjh.
The porn bit would be a negative for most people, but...
THE STORY
THE CHARACTERS
THE GAMEPLAY
SAHGSAHBSDGYUH.
Funny for saying this game, but I had plans to play it after I finish Tsukihime.
However there are also other two games. Do you suggest to start from the beggining?
Yup, Part 1 is the place to start. I'd suggest taking Part 1 and Part 2 slowly, going everywhere you can and such, because I would suggest waiting for the English patch to Part 3 (unless you speak the language).
Although there is a partial patch you can use.

When the game is fun in spite of, or because of, its shortcomings. Every game has flaws, but as long as the game feels rewarding to play and is still very fun, then it's still a good game.
For half of FF9, I hated the combat because of how easy it is and how the ATE gauge fills up too fast, but I continued playing it because story felt rewarding enough to go through the bullshit. Plus, when I saw Amarant use Return Magic off of Matra Magic, it helped how I felt about the game.

I can forgive a flaw if it serves a purpose.

The Sandbox of Mafia II is pointless and unneeded, every single mission could have been done in a linear equivalent, however it provided the player with contrast showing a world outside of all the gang violence they were doing.
Great example.

For me, I forgave Force Unleashed for being shite, because it managed to be charming shite. The game was broken, the story was prequel driven swill. But at the end of the day it's just fun to force push stormtroopers into pits. shoot lightning at enemies and hurl your light saber at everything in the entire game.
