Virtual Reality.

That is all.
I agree. Why hire a story writer, when it's perhaps cheaper, quicker and more effective to put the person right into the game?
Who's to say you can't make the player live a story? That's like saying, "Why bother making a story when you can put the player right into the movie?" Isn't that the argument Roger Ebert made? You're ridiculous.

That's not what I believe. Every game needs a decent story. Eg. Halo to an extent, Zelda: Majoras Mask, Banjo Kazooie was iffy, a lot of horror games focus on story. No I'm saying is that what the fatcats will think.

"Say, Gary, wouldn't it be quicker if we just put the player in the story rather than revolve it around something?"

"Why sir, that's true. Where are we going with this?"

"I have an idea. Notify the designers."

I don't follow...

OT: Um... well it certainly is optimistic of you to think this will happen in 14 years/ever, but anyway I don't think they will ever stop striving for better graphics in some way. So not until everything is built down to the atomic level will we not stop... aka never.

Once the next consoles come out (2014?), graphics will have another short lived buzz, and when that dies down, it'll all be about the gameplay. There's a reason indie games and social games are becoming more popular, and it's not their graphics.

PC motion capture /Shudder.

Or they begin to develop GPU's with AI essentially turning your PC into a community of intelligent objects that will someday rise up against their oppressive users and rise to the top, becoming the dominant beings on earth. Of course this empire will be short lived. A human will develop a virus in the form of a sidebar add claiming to increase the size of ones USB cable. This virus will spread and eventually wipe out the PC's. The human race vows to never make the same mistake again.

One year later Microsoft announce the release of their new operating system... The cycle beings once more.

That's exactly what I was going to say. We start making things better in every other aspect. I just hope sounds improve with it. It's not that sound is bad now, I mean who's gonna tell you that your necromorph sounds nothing like a real necromorph? It's just that when you can make something sound however you want, you don't have to do it thoroughly. It's a subtle art and I'm sure it's not easy, but I think it could be done.

We start playing shitty-looking games for nostalgia value. It is the way of all things.

Gaming has a renaissance and returns to the day when the focus is on the important part of a game (the story).

Once graphics can't get any better hopefully they will have time to make the characters have less of an uncanny valley feel.

I believe that by nex gen they should be at the top, actually i would be completely fine if they stopped at what they have, if games get too realistic i might as well go outside.
But there are no dinosaurs with silly hats outside!
Well, I guess that we would focus more on story and the actual controls... I hate it when people say *look at the sparkly graphics* because our story is shit and our controls will murder you more then that Taliban.

Maybe they'll start developing other tech, such as realistic voice emulation to cut down on voice actor requirements and to bring back the freedom developers lost with the advent of full voiceover; or perhaps procedural generation techniques that will allow game content to be near limitless while using a fraction of the space that would be necessary today.

Oh god yes! I very much dislike gamers who judge a game by its graphics first or on graphics alone, a real gamer judges a game on its gameplay and graphics are just a bonus.

Yeah, the technology is only the pallet that is availiable to the field. It can never define the industry.

People argued that painting was dead when the printing press was invented, then again when photography came around. They also thought that books would dissapear with the advent of television. None of which rang true.

If a creative team has the ability to go all out crazy realisitc like we can hardly imagine (say put the scenery from Far Cry 2 vs. Frogger in the 70's), that's just that, an ability. It only provides more creative choice, that will never damage a competently run creative process.

They will make games with downgraded graphics for an "old timey" atmosphere.

But we've already hit that mark, haven't we?

P.S. I'm 33yrs old. I've heard talk half my life about computer capacity and graphic quality reaching some glass celing. It never has. Let the boffins do thier bit. It'll only make the best efforts of the best design teams better.
