When graphics are as good as they can realistically be, movies will all use the same technology, and the designers will focus more on new ideas, and story instead of on making a game "look good"

Why do people keep saying that good graphics means bad gameplay? Aren't the artist's and designers two separate teams? Or are they multitasking?

Imagine the development costs. As it stands, AAA games these days are multi-million dollar ventures. Nothing is cheap. Graphics are definitely no exception. Now I don't know the actual specifics of these costs, but let's assume that graphics cost the most. As they advance, the resources become more expensive.

Think about how much you typically pay for a recently released home console game. It's about 50-60 USD. I can remember when a new game only cost 30 (about 10 years ago). Game prices scale with dev costs so 10 years in the future, we'll be paying even more as graphics improve.

My $.02.

Getting past the Uncanny Valley is probably what we should be focusing on though. Not making things more realistic, just making things look less freakish.

We start making games with crap graphics to look "retro".
Remember Crysis? Or Gran Turismo 5? Those were some cheap-a** graphics, back when we lived on earth.

Either one of two things they will focus on length and depth and stop making games that I can finish on a setting less than hard in less than half a day or we find somethign else that is pointless to focus on and "improve".

Yeah, like that'll ever happen. Keep on fantasizing, though.

Really though, then we make a space RPG where you can fully explore, terraform, colonize, destroy, etc. every single planet in the universe. And I don't mean Mass Effect-esque exploring one square mile: the entire planet, right down to the core. For every planet ever. It'd be awesome.

The government steps in and bans sales of all games because people can't tell the difference between games and real life anymore?

I hope, if anything comes out of gaming, its a new version of NOCTIS, that space exploration game with billions of planets, moons and solar systems to explore, all randomly generated, some even with their own plant life, its like spore, but taken to the extreme.
With decent graphics instead of the eyesore neon noisy graphics and ultra low res
Multiplayer, perhaps even MMO, but co-operative, not competitive
Actual gameplay progression, an incentive to explore
Full simulation of everything in space at any time, even the gravitation attraction between stars.
