at some points i dont think a game world can get too big, as long as there is both a quick & slow way of getting around, like with oblivion & fallout 3 you had both walking everywhere, and quicktravel, but i only like that for RPG games in the set up of fallout & TES, if you think along the lines of map sizes, then i HATE oversized maps, and anything too much bigger than narrows in Halo 3 or Terminal in MW2, then i get annoyed and bored

I'd be all for a game world as big as the entire world if there was good enough transportation. Running on foot from Africa to Europe wouldn't be too great.....but a teleporter......hell yeah.

It doesn't matter how big the world itself is, just how easy, or hard, it is to get around in that world. Games like Eve or WoW with their huge worlds but easy transport are great. Far Cry 2 on the other hand...

It's not measured in how big it is in size, it's measured by how much there is to do in it. If there's a lot to do in every square kilometer, and every place is different (GTA: SA) then it doesn't matter how big it is. But if it's like True Crime: LA, which is huge, but pointless, because everywhere's the same, and it's the same things to do in every area, then it's bad.

I really do hate it when developers claim map size on its own as a selling point. "Hey guys, it's 50km[sup]2[/sup]!" So what? It all looks the same!

Oblivion did this too. They have 45km[sup]2[/sup]? Wow! Except the fact that it's almost always the same fucking meadow! Grr...

Still, the Unique Landscapes mod fixed that.
this and this over again. Oblivion had a big world, but in content, there wasnt that much to even do. expect look at the same forest over and over again and then get sad becuase it wasnt the same forest over again but it looked the exact same. :(

Yes, it's been said, but it needs to be emphasized: It's not a matter of size, it's a matter of what you do. Having a large map is not fun when you have nothing to do in it. Hell, it isn't fun when you have a lot of quests where it involves the same thing over and over again. Open world games have a tendency to turn me off because of this. Don't get me wrong, I love open world games. They're fun when you've got lots to do. But when you're wandering around clueless and nothing to do/find, it's boring and frustrating.
