well yea seems about right seeing as most new games are complete shit with ridiculous prices and costly dlc
If you don't enjoy the hobby, you can always try something else. I can usually find something fun to do with almost any game I play. (Except for Trigger Man, which is quite possibly the worst game ever made in the history of time. It would be a close call between that and Big Rigs). Not saying all games are great, but if you really think that most games are shit, then maybe you should pick up a different hobby that you find more enjoyable is all.
Ever tried forklift truck simulator (yes, it's a real game)? That was great fun! Or not... (In fairness, I haven't played it. It might be good)

But yeah, that's pretty much my opinion. Games are fun, whether digital or otherwise. And, as I said in my last post in this thread, 'casual' and 'hardcore' don't mean anything as definitions of games. All games are casual - you sit down, enjoy it for an hour or 2 (or more), and go do something else for a bit. To define a game as 'hardcore' seems to imply that it will impact upon the rest of your life somehow; it ceases to be a casual, enjoyable way to spend the time.

I don't see what the problem is with games like Tetris and Bejeweled and Panel de Pon/Puzzle League on the market. They're cheaper game than epic blockbusters and offer non-commiting entertainment that you can pull out for a couple hours to plow through a lunch break or a roadtrip (at least, if the game's portable which they usually are). They have no ending, so I don't feel bad about putting the game down for a couple months and picking it back up. There's always a rush from picking up Tetris after a long hiatus and gawking at my score in the multi-millions and trying to even make it past level 16 when I could previously survive through the level 30s.

You don't need a game to be complex or have and epic story to just be fun and challenging. Nor are these games devoid of originality, because I personally would have never thought of a theme like Plants vs Zombies. They're a great way to pad out boring days when you don't want to commit yourself to anything more complex than pressing two or three buttons.

On the "hardcore" side, I'm a jRPG person and I lament the fact that a lot of developers are sticking to their tired cliche BS stories while tacking on contrived and overly complicated battle systems (NAMCOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!), but the length of the games makes it easy to spread games over a long period of time. With a lull in good releases so far this year bar Strange Journey and Pokemon, it's a good time to check out the PS2's back catalogue of great-but-impossible-to-find-in-retail RPGs like SMT: Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga. And also a good time to build an alter and pray to the gods that Nintendo blesses us with an Earthbound release + Mother 3 someday before the apocalypse.

And at the very least, if I don't feel like diving into an RPG, there's always Bejeweled to mindlessly waste away my whole day. For free, on the internet. Bring it on, casual games, I want to rocket my score into the millions.

Casual gaming is indeed becoming a little more definable. (Wii, anyone?) But that doesn't mean that there aren't still many good games around.

Casual gaming will never stop. It's been going on since the 8-bit era (Tetris) and is just going through a phase where it's popular.

This "plague" as you call it won't stop, because there will always be a market for casual games.
Oh, and the same amount of "hardcore" games still come out. The two hardly effect eachother.
and with i would disagree since i check out at least 10-15 games i havent played a month from older to newest and id like to say hardcore is a relative term these days
I really don't know what you just said. I'm not even a grammar nazi, but dude, c'mon.
I'll respond to this
hardcore is a relative term these days
Of course. It's always been a relative term. Notice, I put hardcore in inverted commas, because I wouldn't describe non-casual games like that.
i love when people dont really have an argument they attack at a personal level, otherwise known as being an ass
No, he is actually being quite tactful about it and is still keeping to the topic when he mentions the relativity of hardcore-ness.
I cannot understand what you've written either. It is also just an internet debate. No need to get frenzied.

OT: I did notice that more of my old PS2 titles were genuinely better than many modern pc games. Games have lost their sparkle (ironic considering the way graphics are getting better.)

The sort of people that use terms 'hardcore' and 'casual' to define gamers are actually the "plague" of gaming.
I agree with you on this. The concept of what constitutes a "hardcore" gamer is a recent bullshit stereotype created in the last decade in order to sell energy drinks and Doritos.

As do I....

Well I guess for me they're still going more or less. Mainly because I refuse to dive in the deluge of shit that is current-gen gaming. Too many generic armored space-marines for me. We've traded gameplay and storyline in for graphics. Once developers get over the fact they can HDR the fuck out of everything, and actually get back to making a lengthy, story-driven, fun game, then I'll get into current-gen gaming.
Dragon Age: Origins seems to match that. It is lengthy, story driven, and I think it is fun. Batman: Arkham Asylum, Assassins Creed II, and Red Dead Redemption are also very good games.
Maybe I'll have to take a look-see at those titles then. Thanks for the heads-up mate.

I really recommend Dragon Age above the other games I mentioned. The game is made my Bioware and Bioware is known for making their games story driven. I recommend renting it for the console to see if you like it but buying it for the PC because of the extra features it adds.

It will never stop! It will continue throughout the universe mwa ha ha!

But seriously it will probably stop several months after you stop caring about it.
