What do you think about to try to make yourself fall asleep? I end up audiating some song in my head or considering the things I must do the following day.

I sit there and do nothing, usually, hoping that I fall asleep fast enough to get more than five hours of sleep. This happens approximately six nights of seven and it pisses me off, so if anyone has effective methods for dealing with insomnia, please post here!

If it comes to mind to do something in an attempt to speed up my sleep, it helps to listen to a slow song, but that necessitates looking at a small bright screen in the wee hours, which sort of "resets" my mental sleepiness gauge.

Since I am bit of a classic Disney nerd, I know the whole script of The Lion King (don't laugh) so I play the movie in my head to make me fall alseep. I never get up to "I just can't wait to be king" as I'm out like a light by then.

I have fanciful dreams that I actually shake myself out of. Imagine in a dream you're about to shoot a basketball and suddenly you're shaken awake by yourself as you attempt the motion lying down. It's like an insta dream. but I tend to daydream (nightdream? daydreaming at night...) about random things.

Okay, an insomnia thread was just made. Seriously.
The difference is that thread discusses what people are doing at unreasonable hours of the night, rather than this thread, which discusses what one thinks about while falling, or trying to fall, asleep.

just lay there, maybe read a nice boring book, And if all else fails you can literally knock your self out with a random blunt object.. but i wouldn't recommend it.

Edit: sleeping pills, as a last resort

I do this sometimes too! Usually it's when I'm really tired because I've just woken up after no sleep and so I fall asleep without realizing it, thinking I've gone off to do whatever, then I rudely awake myself by attempting some complex action. It really is a bizarre feeling.

about three minutes reading de Tocqueville is enough to put just about anyone to sleep.

You could also try reading a few volumes on US Tax law.

Well, I guess a lot of people can't sleep tonight.

Anyway, I can never get myself to fall asleep when I have insomnia. Usually I don't have it, because my tactic is to stay up for as late as possible until I can't keep my eyes open, then crawl into bed and be asleep before my head hits the pillow.

At the times when I do need to force myself to go to sleep, like when I have school the enxt day, I just lay in bed thinking how tired I'm going to be tomorrow and growing more and more frustrated.

This might sound cleche and like it doesn't work but quiet ambient noise helps put me to sleep...music works too.

I think I'll be heading to bed, now. Judging by my oddly calm demeanor at the moment, I'm guessing that I'll be thinking about the comfy mattress and appreciate its precense.

Good night.

Once or twice I have done it during a rather... "involved" dream. *cough* Weird phenomenon is weird.

I've actually woken up to myself jumping, or at least attempting to. And another time i tried to do a jumping jack. And I did it literally five times in a row while a friend was over. She's calmly sleeping and I'm just spasing out trying to fall asleep.

I think about all the caffeine I drank that day if I don't usually fall instantly asleep.

Honestly when I cut caffeine out my life for three months, I got the best sleep I've ever experienced. Now I don't drink any past 1 on a weekday.

I go downstairs and watch TV... It doesn't help me sleep, but its entertaining... Or I post here, like I am right now... in fact... around 70% of my posts have been during my insomnia time.
