When will it be a "final" Final Fantasy?

I'm slightly annoyed at Square. After all these years all they can seem to do is create more Final Fantasy games, despite the fact that there even being a second Final Fantasy game screwed with the notion presented in the word "final", changing it from the end, or completion of something to mean "the last one unless it sells good" oh, there have been other games, but most of them have been spin offs of Final Fantasy games, and the rest have sucked. I'm just wondering if i'm the only person in internet land who thinks that its time to put it to an end, or am i just mad cos Final Fantasy 12 wasn't that great?

If you think it needs to be ended, please tell us why. If I were a developer and had made a couple not-as-good games after a good run, I wouldn't just throw a strop and give up; that's why football (soccar) managers are never in the same place for more than 3 years.
And if you're just pissed off with the title, perhaps you're pissed off that The World Ends With You didn't hint at any apocalypses.

I think when companies have a series with success at this magnitude, they can't help but milk it for everything it's worth. I reckon they'll stop making them when people stop buying them. Even then they might try something drastic to bring everybody back.

Final Fantasy isn't so much of a series as it's a brand. It's just a collection of (mostly) unconnected JRPGs (and a few spinoffs). As such, it's not a problem of too many sequels since there aren't any sequels in FF anyway, every game is a world in itself (again, for the most part).

The problem might lie in Square neglecting to make the newer FF games as good as the earlier ones, but then it wouldn't make much of a difference if the game was called "Final Fantasy" or "Unforgotten Eternal Questjourney" or whatnot...

FF doesn't have true sequals a name change would not make FF12 better if it was called penultimate fantasy 12

Never, because Final Fantasy isn't a "series" so much as a bunch of games with somewhat similar (albiet sometimes vastly different) play elements, thematic elements and similarly large budgets.

Let me pose this question... Why should square make a big budget, cutscene heavy RPG and NOT call it Final Fantasy?

Basically, it's not so much a "series" as it is a "brand".

Its called, "Final Fantasy" because in the first game, the main antagonist created a time loop that allowed him to be allmighty forever, like a dark, twisted fantasy. I find it a stretch to call it a, "Fantasy," but that's what one of the sages calls it.
When the Warriors of Light come, they stop the time loop, making it the final of Garland/Chaos's fantasy.

They make name-only sequels because brand names sell.

Can't argue about one thing lately though, Square needs to dial back on these bloody spinoffs and remakes and start giving us REAL games again. I enjoyed getting Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy IV for the DS but were they really necessary? Why not make some more original titles like TWEWY, that seems to be the only thing the "square" side of Square Enix has done in a while.

i'm not pissed off with the title or anything like that, i just think now that they have created a successful series of games, possibly the longest ever, that perhaps their undivided attention would be good elsewhere. games like kingdom hearts and TWEWY are quite good games, and with square not worrying about how to make the next final fantasy good they might get even better

It's called Final Fantasy because Square was going bankrupt at the time and this was their last game they planned to make, only to have it be a huge success, lucky bastards.

I don't like the FF games, but if they sell I don't see a reason that Square should stop making them.

Eww, FF7 fanboyism. Want to support your opinion? Well, no. Its kinda off-topic anyway.
Just keep in mind that you look like a fanboy if you don't back up something as controversial as that.

Anyway, until somehting happens to either the company, the gaming world, or the modern era itself, I don't think its gonna end any time before any other franchaise will.

Im not a fan boy, it just thought it had a great story line, I personaly feel that the other games after it sucked, thats just my opinion. I enjoyed the rest of the final fantasy games but to me it felt like the others lost the spark, I always keep a open mind and I do hope the new final fantasy will blow my opinion away.

Are you sure?

I heard that it was called 'Final Fantasy' because the company (Square) was going under and that was the last game they were going to make. However, when it became immensely popular, they ran with it as a brand.
