Are you sure?

I heard that it was called 'Final Fantasy' because the company (Square) was going under and that was the last game they were going to make. However, when it became immensely popular, they ran with it as a brand.
The guy in the game calls it a Final Fantasy. They may have called it that to pay homage to it being their "last game", but its in the storyline. I wish I could remember the dialogue from the original game, but I've played the DoS version several times since then...

See, for all the greatness of the Final Fantasy 7 story, for me and many others the only reason that people say it had a great script was cos of the whole tragic Aeris (that is her name, i refuse the "Aerith" shit) death, because it was a shock, her being a main character and all. Not to say that the rest of the game wasn't superb and raised a whole generation of rabid fan boys (and girls, Vincent needs love as well), but when i ask people what the definitive moment was, they generally say that was it.

I think it could be both, really. They wrote the game, right? In any case, I suppose it isn't overly important. If either case is true, it shows that the name is merely a brand (Coming from either the original story, the fiscal problems of the company, or both), and not a literal 'final fantasy', in the sense that the game is said 'final fantasy'.

The "Final" Fantasy "series" did see some direct sequels over these years. Those were without a doubt, the worst games I've ever played. Anyone remember "X-2"?

As terrible as it may seem Final Fantasy will never end. Sure, they may start a totally-unrelated-to-any-previous-game-it-shouldnt-be-considered-so but unfortunately we are in a world of never ending FF games

I don't like the FF games, but if they sell I don't see a reason that Square should stop making them.

The original game was going to be a stand-alone, but by the fifth installment of the series (perhaps even earlier) it was pretty much decided that the series would continue until it became unprofitable.

Which is when the "final" final fantasy will happen. But don't expect that to any time soon, Metroid, Zelda, Mario, Mega Man, Street Fighter... all are going strong thirty years after they were originally conceived with no end in sight. FF falls into this category.

I'm slightly annoyed at Square. After all these years all they can seem to do is create more Final Fantasy games, despite the fact that there even being a second Final Fantasy game screwed with the notion presented in the word "final", changing it from the end, or completion of something to mean "the last one unless it sells good" oh, there have been other games, but most of them have been spin offs of Final Fantasy games, and the rest have sucked. I'm just wondering if i'm the only person in internet land who thinks that its time to put it to an end, or am i just mad cos Final Fantasy 12 wasn't that great?
Final Fantasy is a name, don't take it too literally. It's not like we leave Left 4 Dead to die, The Eye Toy wasn't really a toy but a camera, we buy our copies of Thief, Half Life (1)looks pretty whole to me, Silent Hill has functional audio, Perfect Dark had functional video, Paper Mario was not made out of paper, I did not see my reflection while playing Mirror's Edge, Castle Crashers did not crash my Xbox, The Orange Box wasn't actually a box (something that really disappointed me), The Burning Crusade didn't even emit a spark, Donkey Kong has yet to feature donkey, the list goes on...

Oh and I'm sure someone has already mentioned Chrono Trigger and Mario RPG

No. You aren't a JRPG player, I can tell [link]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Square_Enix_games[/link]. Ever heard of dragon quest, the mana series? Hell they even made the manga full metal alchemist.

Final Fantasy isn't so much of a series as it's a brand. It's just a collection of (mostly) unconnected JRPGs (and a few spinoffs). As such, it's not a problem of too many sequels since there aren't any sequels in FF anyway, every game is a world in itself (again, for the most part).

The problem might lie in Square neglecting to make the newer FF games as good as the earlier ones, but then it wouldn't make much of a difference if the game was called "Final Fantasy" or "Unforgotten Eternal Questjourney" or whatnot...
Yah, I pretty much agree with this statement here.

As for the bit about the new Final Fantasy games not being all that nicer dicer, I thought Final Fantasy 12 was amazing, and has since then replaced Final Fantasy 7 as being my favorite. I am hoping that Final Fantasy 13 is equally amazing.

No that is truth, Wikipedia it if you want. Square made some real shit games and when they only had enough money for one more game to make or break them, Final Fantasy was born and saved their ass from doom. Ironically the same thing almost happened with 7 as the amount of money they spent making and advertising that game was so vast that if it failed, the company would be no more. Lightning definitely struck twice with them.

Yup, Final Fantasy wont go away if it has managed to hold up for 20 years year and is still immensely popular. There is no reason or right to complain about final fantasy having too many games and then totally neglecting the franchises mark here has mentioned. Also considering for the most part Final Fantasy game are a disambiguation of each other, it's a brand and not a chronological series of some sort. There have been a few spinoff/sequels but that makes up very little of the franchise.

It's not a joke or anything like that. It's the truth. Final Fantasy was supposed to be Square's last game.

Edit: Somebody was faster.

Im not a fan boy
(yes you are)

Sorry, Yahtzee quote. Final Fantasy 6 was the first final fantasy game i ever played with a storyline i personally quoted as "epic" Final Fantasy 7 was as well, and I'm a fan of both, to me, it started to degrade around Final Fantasy 8 and the Junction system. Oh, that and you had to draw magic out of your...

sorry about that, had a flashback and had to go take an advil.

Final Fantasy 9 was a last attempt at going back to what made it good, but utterly failed me at the "to learn this spell you must wear this article of clothing" crap.

Then there was 10 and its sphere grid and whiny non existant, yet existant hero (i mean seriously hes dead but alive, put a bullet in the zombies head and move on, and forget the sphere grid. "i can learn that i dont have any spheres....give me a break.

Then there was 11, which i feel doesnt exist, final fantasy was never supposed to be an MMO, just square trying to run with the popular kids...and failed.

Then there was the checkerboard nightmare that is final fantasy 12. Cant wear clothes because i dont have a license for it.....damn RIAA, they screw up everything.

Anyway i'm sure i've shifted off topic by now....

sorry about that.

Although i cannot boast that i haven't played all in that list, i have played Final Fantasy 1-7,8, 10, 10-2 and 12 as well as children of mana, secret of mana, final fantasy tactics, final fantasy tactics advance, the bouncer, kindom hearts(1, 2 and COM)... so i have a few square releases under my belt, and im just saying apart from maybe the kingdom hearts series, the other games just dont seem to have that zest that the final fantasy ones do.

I'm usually skeptical of most wiki things, but its not like I or most people on this thread have a better reason
