Honestly, This thread is pointless in the extreme. Even if there weren't people that would disagree just because they felt like it, the definition changes too massively between each person that there isn't even a viable opinion to be had since the topic is defunct from the word go.

The new Lara Croft. The previous one looked all cartoonyish. Now they've tried to make her look as 'realistic' as possible. And she looks incredibly average. Not ugly, but not one that I'd see walk past on the street and then turn around to glimpse some more. My Female Shepard from ME looked rather....not nice....as well.

Suffice to say, while games have been making leaps forward in female representation (with the occasional boneheaded or exploitative exceptions), there is not a snowball's chance in hell that the human race will ever stop bitching about gender equality in any form of media. The problem stems from the fact that even when the two halves of humanity are being represented generally fairly, each individual's idea of true representation is going to vary, and we will get person A complaining about character B not being "properly" represented no matter how much the general public considers it fair. So unless humanity gains a level of common ground equivalent to the Borg Collective, we will still argue about gender equality 'til the sun burns out.

Just off the top of my head:
Alyx Vance isn't that pretty
The women of the total war games tend to be below average to average at best
Every single woman in the X series, every last one of them (I figure all the prettiness went into the spaceships and none into the females)
Many of the women in Metro 2033 are realistic which given the setting means very rough looking.

The same could also be said of most of the men in those games.

we do realise that lots of the 'plain' women are what many people find to be the attractive ones, right?
(Like i see alyx vance being brought up a lot here, yet every other time I've seen her brought up someone is mentioning how hot they think she is [that and people talking about her being well characterised]).

Though yeah, some examples here are specifically made to be unattractive, through distorted features or intentional disfigurement.
I think it comes down to the fact that they're being made by an artist, an artist who wants their work to appeal to at least them self in one way or another. Making something 'universally plain' is difficult.
