I just use the premade characters as I can't be bothered to piss about for ages and just want to play the actual game.

I always aim for a good looking charactr because i kinda want to identify with him.
And thats the reason why i dont dress him up like a clown. But there are some game editors that let your character look horrible,no matter how hard you try.My elf in Dragon Age looks like a Stoner who can pick people to dead with his chin.
The "best" meaning wit the most awful results character creater was in Blinx 2.You could make the head like One meter wide and the torse like 5 cm short.A playable abomination.

My main character is facially often similar to me...

he will always be, black, with stubble or beard, strong chin, jaw and cheekbones, and with eyes slightly close together...
however, he also has blue eyes (weird for a black guy i know... but it?s a tradition since SC3) on an occasion he had blonde hair, not black... and he will always be as big as possible (which includes fat... he?s fat most of the time) ...and i am/have none of those things...

and he?s always a warrior class/play style!

...and he always has horns where possible...

i have other characters... with equally specific traditions... but i won?t go into those...

and, to all you who don?t take full advantage... I change my characters clothes VERY regularly...
on saints row 2 for example... id change clothes every hour or so, and after every mission...
and had over 50 outfits...
i can?t stand people who pick an outfit and never once change it...
especially if it looks SHIT, which most of the applicable do.

aaaaaaaaaand... for those that make ridiculous characters... i just don?t have that same sense of humour... a serious character in a ridiculous situation is always funnier than a ridiculous character doing something serious or ridiculous...

what?s funnier...
james bond being hit by a cream pie, and tripping up and ripping his tuxedo pants...
or a clown sitting in an office...
or a clown doing, what you?d expect, being hit by a cream pie, and tripping up and ripping his pants...
...imo it?s the first!

I spend way too much time with character creation, especially if it has a lot of options to fiddle with. Whenever I rush character creation I always end up deleting the character halfway through the game and starting over with a proper character. Depending on my mood and the game I'm playing I either:

- Make a character that looks as much like myself as possbile. (Dragon Age, Fallout 3)
- Make up a look that fits the character's personality the way I imagine it. (Saints Row 2, Mass Effect)
- Make a hot chick. (almost every MMO I've ever played)

If its a good character I create a man.
If its an evil character I create a woman.
Always have done for some reason!

I don't really have any character creation quirks aside from having freaky ass colored hair (I lean towards neon green).

Except for WOW. Any Undead character I make will never have a lower jaw. Ever.

I always try to put them in a formal attire, Agent 47 or Agent Smith style (GTA san andreas etc)

Except fallout 3 where I use Warhammer 40k Space Marines armour ...so they look like tactical Space marines.

I like to make them seem like a symbol of authority, respect and power.

It depends on the game, in Dragon Age for example I started out trying to build a character that looked similar to me but when I got to picking a voice I found that none of them fit the face very well, so I ended up completely redesigning my character's appearance to fit with the "Experienced" voice.

I typically create a heroic looking version of me (well...more heroic looking) complete with Bruce Campell chin and grizzled/badass scar (where possible).

They call it 'role playing' for a reason (I simply choose to play the role of me).

I try to make their appearance matching to the style in which I'll play the game, if I plan to mess up the system whatever way I can then yes, my character will look like a hideous freak of nature.

I don't know. In fallout 3, for some reason, my male caucasian characters share a striking resemblance to Chuck Norris.
So i'm not the only one...

Did you get the sheriff stuff for him?

My characters are always something like Me+

Also, if I have an option for facial hair, I always have to use it, no matter what.

Frick i give up on the caracter creator. i just fiddle with the hair tats and beards of mine. Generally play Dwarf or Human... My human in Dragon Age looks like a mexican, im not mexican. Plan to make my next Character a Dwarf Chuck Norris look-a-like.

I try to make them average looking. I try to make human character, who can i relate to. If that fails, i make something weird out of the body parts they give me.

I normally base my characters on characters in stories I'm writing at the time and play them as those characters.
Annoyingly I can't find a game that lets me but enough brawn and scars on the female characters.

I have yet to find a character-creator that can actually make decent-looking people.

Usually I go with a female (nowhere near enough female protagonists; pretty much all we have is Samus Aran), except when I'm playing a race like the Argonians from Elder Scrolls.
