When you create a character...

I usually make a character with some sort of backstory before I even touch the game. I enjoy the creative writing process even if I don't actually write something when it comes to the characters. I'll decide the motivation and appearance with whatever strikes me to something that just works. They range from handsome to not so handsome. I then play the game as that person would, then creating alternate save states for whenever I feel like doing something massively out of character.

i'll try it to resemble myself- I hate playing with a stupid-looking character, especially if it's a deep game with a good story that plays like a movie at parts.

Usually what fits best for the theme or role. I rarely, if ever, make self-insert characters. I think I'm one of the few people who have almost all of the slots filled up for custom Soul Calibur IV characters. I also have no qualms with playing a character against my own gender, as long as it fits the particular theme I'm going for.

I'm a huge sucker for character customization in a game. I have tons of characters in all kinds of games, ranging from WWF: Warzone to Fallout 3 to WoW to Spore to whatever. I actually get bothered somewhat when games offer none or little character customization (like FlyFF, SpaceCowboy or Dungeon Fighter Online) or set up a pay service for cosmetic items (like the last two games I just mentioned, and the dreaded Maple Story).

My first character has to be random, have a name made of random letters/numbers, and eventually become my main character.

When I can I either make a character that looks like me, or failing that, I tend to make characters that look totally badass. Indeed I do not look 'totally badass'.

I tend to play girls when given a choice, but when I'm done with that play-through I go back and try again with a character based on myself.

But he won't act entirely like me, he'll have my level of judgement and morals but because of the world he inhabits he's grown to be more a hardened warrior (Although in fairness everytime I make me in a fantasy game I'm a mage...) (but in even more fairness my mages always use maces or warhammers.)

I usually just go for bad-ass or ridiculous, depending on what mood I'm in. You can see some of my characters in this thread here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.120423] :D

It's funny you ask this, because I participated in a study to get extra credit for one of my classes last semester and it was investigating how people felt about characters they created for themselves.

In the study, we were using Second Life, but either way, at the end, I believe they found that people would either go crazy, (which is what I do - blue hair, unreasonable facial features, jacked up clothing, etc.), or they would try to make a character resembling themselves. It didn't seem like there was any middle ground, and I think those people that did stand on the middle ground were just doing the study to get the credit, and didn't give a shit.

Either way, people are weird with their characters; I think every game calls for a different result, and people probably react to how much they actually like what they're playing when determining how much time they're going to spend dicking around with someone's nose width.

I mostly try modelling characters after myself. Saint's Row 2 character looked like a distant cousin of The Joker though. Mass Effect character looked more or less like the default Shepard.

The character who looks most like me though is my City Elf Rouge from Dragon Age: Origin. I don't have the eye tattoos and my hair is a little longer but other than that I got it pretty much spot on

Except in Mass Effect. All of my attempts failed horribly, so I just rolled with the premade guy.
Pretty much this.

I tend to try and make a character I think looks cool, I'm not really into making crazy characters. Partly cos it ruins the immersion for me.

No matter what, i have to make sure they have goofy-awesome hair.

All of my WoW characters have badass hair.

Hmm... I generally go with a basic concept of what this character is like: is he a ruthless, blood-crazed psycho, or is he a smooth-talking, compassionate diplomat? And then go on from there. The only time that I've deliberately made an ugly character (that I can remember anyway), is when playing the city-elf origin in Dragon Age, I decided to make everything about my character hint at the confined poverty she had been forced to live in all these years. The only mistake I made was with the ears... From the front, they look okay, but from the side or from behind, they look like someone melted plastic elf ears to my character's head. I still have no idea how that happened...

I guess I try to make my character look like myself but only at what I assume I'll look at age 40. Baggy eyes, messy hair, needs to shave, those types of features. Thing is in Mass Effect I look attractive which I'm sure isn't accurate.

I usually model the physical aspects of the character after how I will expect to play the character. Evil characters will have more striking features and good characters will be more muted.

In Mass Effect my first character looked like a fit Buddha (which I didn't notice until about halfway through the game).

Since I usually have to go with whatever the game can support I don't usually bother modeling a character after myself.

By the time it gets to character creation i've already got an image of the sort of character i want, so i tend to build their appearance to suit that.
