When you knew you were taking a game too seriously!

So I was wondering: At what point did you first realise you were taking a game too seriously?

Whether it was when you started weeping uncontrollably as a much loved main character dies, or when you spent hours/days killing monsters for a piece of headgear, I'd like to know!
For me, it was when I started mapping out EV spreads on Pokemon Platinum, for example:

Starmie
Timid@Expert Belt
Natural Cure
6 HP, 252 SAtk, 252 Spd
- Surf
- Thunderbolt
- Ice Beam
- Psychic

It's a child's game for goodness sake!

Well, that's really only stuff for competitive play. For single player, that's too serious. For multiplayer...its nearly a necessity.

OT: Achievement Campaign runs in Left 4 Dead just piss everyone off.

Its probably the EVs thing for me too. I hardly play online so doing it seems pointless. On the flip side I thrash my friends when we do play Pokemon together, but as consiquence I've become 'that' guy.

For me it had to be Operation Flashpoint: Elite when I began hand drawing topographical maps with enemy positions and scripted events mapped out as well.

It actually helped strangely enough.

I generally take gaming too serious I guess. I'm very critical if the plot to any story based videogames doesn't come up to the standard of the best (Grim Fandango, Broken Sword, Silent Hill).

I also take them seriously because I always want my monies worth. I expected a good 10 hours from a £5.00 game. And if I don't get at least 30 from a 30hr one.... oh boy!

probably final fantasy 12 where I took on yiazmat, the boss with 50million hp, and you can't hit moe than 10,000, and it kills you in 3 consecutive hits.

Probably when I started filling in the "Description" field in the character creation screen in Neverwinter Nights. In detail. Ridiculous detail. Even though I knew it would have absolutely no effect on the game at all.

I missed 4th of July one year by playing Star Control 2 on the 3DO.. yeah this was a while ago) for 18 hours straight.

I have had dreams about games, the worst are stratagy games where I go over tactics and battle plans in my head all night, even feeling like I am still playing at times. Fortunately this hasn't happened in a while :)

The first time I played Gears 2, my friend got pizza and pop. I couldn't remember how to pause.

I sometimes will spend hours and hours just looking up back story of characters or places or history of the games world. I've done this even for games series I'm not that interested in.

I've also fought extremely hard boss fights until I wanted to throw my console at a wall.

I don't know about playing too seriously, but I realised I'd been playing too much Uncharted 2 when I briefly saw a flash of red light and thought "oh shit, a grenade!".

What I really saw was a glimpse of a red traffic light.

-Going out to buy over $100 worth of wireless equipment to be able to raid in WoW on a day when my internet went out.

-Using 4 different spreadsheets to calculate maximum damage/healing output for my character.

-Spending an hour a day practicing the calculated strategy.

-Raiding 5 days a week, 7 hours a night like it was my job.

The joys of being in a competitive raiding guild.

When I got into a serious discussion on the transhumanism in Half Life 2 with a guy over Twilight Imperium, and realizing I remembered nearly everything I've read on the Combine Overwiki, which I have sunk at least three days into reading.

...

Then again, it's interesting as hell and has given me many jumping points to write from, so I don't care xD

when I stop having fun.

also, in pokemon I draw the line at picking out nature and ev mapping, thats going a step too far in my opinion, if however you want to pick their moves ahead of time, or even abilities, that isn't to absurd.

I realize that I am taking a game way too seriously when I screw up, and the result is heart palpatations. At that point, I usually stop and put it off until tomorrow. The worst ocurrance was with Bloons Tower Defense 4.
