What is the first group that comes to mind?

I am not asking which is the best. I simply find it interesting which bands define a genre to a person. Hell, throw in other genres if you like.

For me, it's AC/DC. Dunno why, but that's what I hear whenever somebody says rock 'n roll. Well, that or a giant boulder tumbling down a hill. I get laughed at when I say that for some reason though...

Edit: "Rock and Roll" and "Rock" are now officially different. Respond to one or both. However you... roll. Ha! See what I did there? :D

When I think of rock and roll?

Honestly, I think of Aerosmith... and how much my opinions are mixed on them. I hate their music, yet without them, and other bands of the like, none of the music I enjoy would have been made.

When I think of Rock 'n Roll, I think of drugs. And then I think of sex.
But mainly, I think of the Beatles.
However, when someone says just plain "Rock", I think of AC/DC, too.
When someone says "Metal", I think of Metallica.

I immediately think of this one song called "Travelin' Man" that was an available BGM on an old computer game called Bicycle Pinochle.

And then I think of an amalgam of different bands.

Wow. Someone who didn't say Metallica.

I just can't take Metallica seriously after their napster wine fest back in the day. "Oh waaaaah we aren't making 6 million this year only 4! Waaaaah!" Just didn't come off as 'hard' to me. (I realize that that example IS a lot of lost money but I have a hard time sympathizing with people who 'only' make a few million dollars doing something they really enjoy. If they were whores or something and had to take a pounding from sleazy business men I'd be sympathetic but being a musician when you love music AND making a bajillion dollars is hardly a time to be splitting pennies).

As for Black Sabbath and Ozzy...Nom nom indeed! :p I'm gonna go grab Ozzy on the marketplace right now (I'm a fan of zune marketplace :p) I like ACDC but I had to listen to them all day everyday for 2 months at my last job so they kind of died for me.

Yeah I suppose there is a significant difference between plain "Rock" and "Rock and Roll". Taking that into consideration... I gotta go The Beatles for the Roll. Or maybe the Rolling Stones. Close call.

I think of the Foo Fighters because I've been programmed (by myself) to do so.

Honestly, though, I'd have to say the first band to come to mind is Boston. Just plain Rock, it really is Foo Fighters, but, for some reason, that "& Roll" changes everything.

AC/DC. They are the epitome of raw power, stripped down rock 'n roll. It's an evolution of Chuck Berry with the best bits of the best bands that came before them without any other ambition than rocking out. Not the greatest band ever, but definitely the embodiment of pure rock 'n roll for me.

Metallica eh, yeah, I got all 4 of their albums...Not really Rock'n'roll though. Wouldn't even really rate them as a thrash metal band either really. I'm in love with metallicas latest stunt "we aren't touring Australia because the dollar is less"...Seriously, it's like 10 cents out of a dollar less than the US and you assholes charge us double for everything anyway....assholes.

For the term Rock & Roll I think of the 50s. So probably Buddy Holly and the Crickets or Elvis. Maybe Jerry Lee Lewis too.
If you said just "rock" that would be classic rock through more current stuff.

When you say Rock or Rock & Roll I always say AC/DC. I agree that there is a difference, but I think they are the one band that manages to cross the line between the two (I'd be interested if anyone could think of another).

Interesting there's a lot of fellow AC/DC fans on the Escapist.
