What do all these names have in common, apart from the obvious fact that they're some of the best known guitar gods in the history of rock? Well, they're all guys! This thought occurred to me today: Why are the no female guitar legends?

Do women not have the requisite drive and motivation? Or are their hands to small and delicate to properly shred? What gives? What do the rest of you think?
Eric Clapton sucks. All he did was rip off old black men. Now, Steve Howe is a guitar god.
Wrong. Eric Clapton is brilliant.

Anyway, I know plenty of female guitarists personally, and from observation I can say that most of them don't have the same drive as many male guitarists I know. This may not be universal, but from my experience this is what I think may be the cause.
Masayoshi Takanaka can blow the pants off of 20 Eric Claptons. You want to hear a real guitar player, listen to Al Di Meola.

Oh ho the irony. As I hadn't heard of either of them I youtubed Masayoshi Takanaka. Guess what song he was playing? Crossroads. Anyway listening to some other things I'd say he's at best equal to Clapton. And definately not as good a songwrighter. Al Di Meola? Maybe. And Clapton most certainly did not "rip off old black men".
Well crossroads was written by Robert Johnson, a very old black man. Don't get me wrong though, I like Clapton.

Lori Linstruth can play guitar better than I or any of you can.

Go ahead, look it up, sulk, and hit the theory books.

Well...being a female, I think maybe there's not been any rise in female guitarists...either that or they've not been given a decent chance.

"too delicate to properly shred??" I think we can shred!

...I won't take that as a sexist comment though :p
I once saw a girl playing a show on the guitar with her band and about halfway through one tune, she managed to cut her hand open on the strings. She was bleeding all over the guitar, but she played through the set and still sounded great. I wanted to ravage her with a musical-to-sexual translation of my appreciation for her awesomeness, but it didn't seem like an appropriate notion.

You may not know her name, but I'm pretty sure you've heard the legendary bass loops of Carol Kaye [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carol_Kaye].

Edit: Also,

The greatest -and some would say only- reason to play a guitar is to get chicks into bed. If and when there is is a female guitar legend, she will undoubtedly be a lesbian.

Why is Yngwie Malmsteen not on this list?

Wow, talk about thread necromancy!

I only recently discovered Yngwie "Fucking" [http://www.theonion.com/content/node/34676] Malmsteen, but I do agree... He has every right to be on this list...

Where are all of the funny female comedians? Where are the great female guitarists? Do you really want to know?

We hide them all in our super secret female base where we laugh about how superior we are compared to you guys and secretly plan our take over of the world.

It's all true.
Fuck. Fuck. FUCK!

I knew it! I KNEW IT!!!

the person who taught me flamenco and heavy metal was a girl :/ she's the best in RL i've ever heard ... shredding may be fast but it isn't complex ... you should hear flamenco ... speed and complexity ... + she still has delicate hands (moisturiser ftw haha) ... but anyway .. just because there are none labelled legends doesn't mean there aren't awesome ones out there ... oh .. and i don't moisturise XD i'll keep my fingers solid and manly rotfl (just had to get that one in LOL)

The guitarist from Heart. I think her name's Ann. I know her last name is Wilson.
Yes, Ann Wilson of Heart is talented, but she doesn't have the name recognition of the others, as your reply demonstrated...

I also think that Liz Phair is pretty good, but again, few know her...
she SHOULD have the name recognition

because she's crazy good, lol

Heres your answer
They're in the kitchen
In all honesty It's because most women don't want to be a shred legend, they want to play chords and play pop songs (at least from personal experience).

Like? Make it rock and roll, not pop. We all know they dominate that scene.
Carrie Akre is amazing and probably would've been big if Hammerbox hadn't broken up as soon as they started gaining popularity.

Well nowadays we get a lot more girls venturing into the world of guitar so don't be surprised to see one in the next 10-15 years who can outclass those fools.
