I havn't read your post. But I suppose the WW1 games are off with homework simulators and the boring afternoon simulators becuase none of them would make a very good video game. Just doesn't work.

Would you like to send your men to their deaths on a very boring muddy landscape?

-Yes

-No

You selected no.

You have gained 0 territory.

You have gained 1 territory.

The enemy has attacked, you have lost 1 territory.

Seem like a fun, tectically deep, and visually stunning game to you? It doesn't to me.

However, with a bit of imagination, they could maybe make something, like a fortification sim. Hear me out. Like stronghold, except instead of building a castle, you build a trench network, with different types of trenches, and different garrisons to occupy them. Eventually you have to withstand a wave of enemies or something. It could maybe be a cheap, short, downloadable game on steam.

'advancing artillery' tactic where the infantry advanced behind the cover of a steadily advancing rain of explosive artillery.
Wasn't the rolling barrage in use since the invention of artillery?

It just seems like such an obvious tactic I can't imagine no-one doing until that battle.

Also, I think the lack of significant American actions in WWI would deter the American customers.
Now that's just stupid. Do you think playing as an american has put down any other country playing any WW2 games?
The difference being that the other countries don't care. It's the norm to play as Americans now, if you take that out of the game, how many Americans will simply ignore it just because it doesn't feature Americans?

I'm sure it'll be an issue for some, like it's an issue to some people to play as Americans, the difference being that we don't have a choice, we have to play as Americans, so we just do. I'm sure that some Americans when given the choice will ignore it on first impressions.
I didn't know that. It actually creeps me out a bit.

A better question: Where are the American Revolution games?

FIRE!

*flip musket*

*pull apart cartridge*

*load gunpowder into muzzle*

*insert paper wadding*

*load musket ball*

*load upper cartridge*

*insert ramrod into musket barrel to tamp down ball, wadding and gunpowder*

*flip musket*

FIRE!

...Sounds exciting, no?

I would love a realistic one. Sit in a trench for 5 months, see combat a few times, get trench foot then have to go back home.

AMEN! Honestly, this has been the subject of an ongoing discussion with my friends for nearly ten years. Some people dislike the quality of weaponry, and I can see their point - a realistic reload time for any gun would be an obstacle, given the impatience of the modern gamer. Trench warfare is an interesting concept in itself, seeing as how jumping would cost you your eyeball to a sniper in most cases. It doesn't have to be all bad, though - they can throw in a minigame: rapidly press A to saw off an NPCs infected feet! But seriously, as time passes, people begin to forget the Great War, viewing it as merely a precursor to World War II. A video game depicting the epic bravery of soldiers now dead will remind gamers of the sacrifice of an entire generation, and will perhaps also inspire young minds to research what is arguably the most pivotal time in modern history.

Ok i have never mentioned this before but i'm going to now and i know im gonna get ridiculed over this but here goes.

I have an idea for a WW1 RPG/FPS hybrid game. I haven't the fine details worked out but i will share what i have got done already with you. (PS i am not making it just coming up with the ideas)

You first chose your nation (It would be race in normal RPGS) the nations would be split like in EVE online so there are sub-races (i.e. Race British Empire, ethniticity: Australian, Irish, British, Indian etc) each could have small bonuses to your character (i.e. Australian's cause more damage because they are all bloody mental :) ). For your class you chose a regiment (i.e. Regiment: 86th (specialise's in clearing trenches) or another idea i have is you choose the part of the army you want to join (artillery Infantry Cavalary etc). You do your basic training and then get sent of to the different battlefields throughout the game and your accomplishment of the objectives in the game have an affect on the world around you. (to the point were you could change the course of Gallipolli). You level up by going through different ranks and you gain access to new equipment as to how it was developed in the real war.

Now i know the above idea looks stupid but i would appreciate any criticism or help with the idea. Just please be kind.

World War One would be a trench simulator.
It's called a static war for a reason; no one wants to huddle in a ditch for several hours before being mowed down by a machinegun the moment you go over the top.

Why do people always shy away from this game? The ww1 soldier saw more action on average then their ww2 conterparts as well as the fact that ww1 was more dangerous.

Err, WW2 wasn't the crap-load of fun everyone here is making it out to be.

Not everyone survived D-Day, nor did everyone successfully jump out of the paratrooper planes, nor did everyone make it off of Dunkirk.

They could make a WW1 game, they just need to tell it from the perspective of an imaginary soldier who fought in the most exciting conflicts and survived. Just like every other WW2 game has.
