There are lots of high end male grooming websites. If you take the time to learn how to shave properly with one and get a decent blade, badger hair brush, strop and soap (not foam) then you wont go back to the shitty gillette or other types. You will have amazing close shaves that no other method of shaving can replicate and you will have a regime which is relaxing when you get used to the ritual.
You will need to spend at least £40 to get a blade worth using though.

They are not as dangerous as one would think. It is easier to cut yourself, yes, but you aren't going to slash your jugular accidentally one morning while shaving. You have absolute control over the razor, it makes it both easier to hurt yourself but it also allows you to get the closest shave possible(I have to shave everyday when using a high end electric razor, 4 times a week with a single bladed safety razor, and twice a week with a straight razor. The reason for their going out of style is simple: people are lazy and cheap. They would rather pay hundreds a year on disposable razors and not learn how to shave properly, rather than spending around $250 once and learning how to actually shave
My uncle was a barber, he taught me how to shave with a straight razor, I've used one all my life and wouldn't have it any other way.
