Where does the best music come from?

All my favourite artists are american so...America I guess. Whilst america manages to churn out awful music at the same time. Yeah but Atmosphere, Aesop Rock, Blue Scholar, Sage Francis and Listener are all american, sadly so is the crime against nature that is ICP.

Well, my first introduction to Romanian music was via the works of George Enescu and Dimitrie Cuclin (composers of classical music). The next thing I discovered was Ducu Bertzi who is a folk-musician.
And two years ago I went to the country to perform with the ensemble I was currently a part of, we were treated to some of the most amazing folk-music I have ever witnessed, so vibrant, so full of life and energy and emotion.. I loved it, and I soooo wish I could make music like that.
I don't know if it's available anywhere on the net but if it is I would recommend: Mahala Rai Banda, which is a traditional gypsy folk-band, and Shukar Collective which fuses traditional gypsy-music with electronica.
We here in the UK have some good bands like coldplay and mumford and sons, you know bands who write with passion and meaning but small countries have amazing bands who write beautiful music in their native language

I rather than answer the question in terms of a geographical perspective, we should think of it in a socio-economical perspective. So, rather than asking myself "what country does the music I enjoy come from?" I ask "what social background do my favorite musicians come from?".
For the most part, I enjoy stuff from Western Europe (Django Reindhart from France, for one...) but as of late I've been picking up on stuff that's influenced by musical traditions hailing from the Eastern Europe (the klezmorim [they're a U.S. group which focused on eastern european klezmer], Taraf de Haidouks). A lot of these musicians usually come from a long line of Romanian and Jewish immigrants.
I might even go so far as to say that generally speaking, it is individuals with a direct influence in their communal culture and a first hand experience of foreign cultures that ultimately provide the most meaningful art.

Well the United States of America has Taking Back Sunday and the Black Angels. Britland has David Bowie. I don't know it depends completely on your own taste in music. As for now I'll just listen and not worry where the best comes from.
I don't really notice any particular area I prefer for my music.

Braintree,UK. And American didn't make the best (90s) music. But I guess this is merely my opinion and not actually supported by any real facts. Oh well...

I find most of the stuff I listen to is European - German, Polish, Irish etc. Although that's mostly due to my affinity with Eurotrance. Ah how you bring back so many memories
