Where have all the fun games gone?

We play computer and console games for fun right? So the game needs to be fun I'm guessing.
I adore the gaming industry and I have shot a fair ammount of suckers in games so i'm not suggesting we bann anything! It all has a place. I am simply wondering where the fun in games is hiding these days?

Because I feel we're not going to find the -concept- of fun by picking on different nations with tanks and big-ass weapons are we?
Since when did saving a princess or somebody you love involve 16 different ways you can make the bad guy bleed to death.
And is tuning a virtual car that already exsists with parts that have car brands that already exsist written all over them your idea of letting loose and getting away from the world?
Or is that really what clever people like us need to do for fun nowadays?

If so, do share why. I havent made up my mind just yet.

Otherwise, does anybody know when we are going to see more games that encourage just having fun again? =)
Like Viva Pinata, Dead or Alive extreme or even Mario carts! And its not like these sort of games dont have a challenge either. I think its easier to shoot 20-30 Terrorists than dodge a f**ing turtle shell while driving between two trucks..

Fun games definitely still exist, but on a basis of what you think is fun. I for one can take hours of enjoyment from systematically hunting down every possible guard I can in AC:B before shifts change, especially with that one really big sword that you can chuck at people, the Spandu or whatever. I'm also a fan of funny games, like DMC3, which I currently am playing. It all depends on taste. There are some people that genuinely enjoy and feel challenged by CoD or Gears.

Sounds like you've saturated yourself in gaming. There's still alot of fun games around - I havn't noticed them decreasing in entertainment over the years. But I will give you that modern (mainstream at least) games generally seem to be less imaginative.

I suppose the videogame industry suffers from the same pain as the cinematographic one: lots and lots of games flooding the market. And pretty much like with movies, games need to be huge, graphically impressive, and must not wander off the limits of comfort, just to be sure they don't loose money.

Fun in games still exists. Nobody is saying that we MUST absolutely play Call of Duty to have fun. You don't have to play triple-A games to have fun (though there are, in my humble opinion, triple-A games that I find fun).

Simply play the games you think are fun! I think it's a pretty simple choice.

Bulletstorm and Duke Nukem seem ready to fit the "fun" bill.

I'm not sure where all the stupid-fun games went. I guess people stopped making them because they weren't "mature" enough. Which is funny, because most "mature" games these days aren't that mature. At all.

Thanks! =D
Ive seen a few silly/fun games out there but it has not been the main genre of gaming for a long time now... Every goal in a game these days can be achieved by killing something in a serious fashion. Atleast this Bulletstorm game is trying not to take itself too seriously even if it is just rewarding you for killing another poor sod xD
The other question was also asking what fun people actually see in games that just want to rub it in our faces that people are actually getting blown up and shot every day in the world. So much for Escapism eh?
So yeh I'm kinda aiming the 'hate' at the barrage of CoD games we just had.

You are playing the wrong games. Pick up Muchi Muchi Pork, shoot laser-shooting pigs with lasers while picking up piglets while riding a flying pig moped and filling up "lard meter", and then come back to tell us how there's no fun or challenge in games anymore.

To be honest, the only FPS games I find fun nowadays are ones with co-op or multiplayer.. otherwise I feel they're not worth playing.

For 2010, Bayonetta, Vanquish, and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit were pure unadulterated fun games. Need for Speed was just basically choose one of the world's best cars, pick your color (no customization), and run from the cops or chase the racers using weapons like spike stripes and EMPs. The drifting was awesome, you can literally drift around traffic while turning and the crashes were pretty epic at times. The game didn't even have manual transmission.

I just got Mass Effect 2 and even though it's a serious game, the gameplay is loads of fun.

Edit: And, LittleBigPlanet is just plain fun as well.

I think that "fun" depends not only in the game but the person playing them some people have fun playing COD other Duke Nukem is a matter of what you like and what you consider fun

You sir. May have saved the day.

But still why are games based on todays modern war problems so engaging / entertaining to this apparent elitist community of creative indviduals who seek to escape the real and uninteresting world. :)

I'm speculating that I'm gonna get a lot of raised eyebrows from this post...

But Flash games have always been my saving grace when the titles that are out start getting lackluster.

The independent flash design community has always created some crazy stuff that's fun. Some games you'd wish were big titles, some you'd just spend some time on days when you're in the mood to be brainless, and there's those that would have you thinking there'd be no fun in the game at all but then you'd find yourself playing with the same rag-doll stick dude for hours.

And it's always the ones that make games as a hobby that think up the weirdest concepts for their games.

Agreed. I've recently been playing Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection and it reminded me of all the great, simple, fun platforming games out there. So, this friday, I'm planning on buying the Sly Cooper Trilogy HD on PS3
For other great fun games, the Xbox Live Arcade is always your friend. Super Meta Boy, Trials HD, Plants Vs Zombies, all great simple fun games!

There are plenty of fun games, you just need to look outside the mainstream FPS market thats overcrowded by the realism victims.

Notable mentions;
God Hand is frustratingly hard but its comedy and awesomeness has little match elsewhere.
Dead Rising 2, 'nuff said.
Minecraft. Not fun in a conventional sense, but its very satisfying if you know what you want to do and how to do it.
Viewtiful Joe. Too hard to explain. It just is.
Monster Hunter. If you get used to the game, very little can kill the fun in taking on various flavors of dragon with giant swords. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4hV9CGCH4U]
For everything else, theres Team Fortress 2.
Also theres Duty Calls. Its 5 mins long, but that game made me laugh harder than most games deserve to.

Upcoming hopefuls;
Marvel vs Capcom 3.
And this is an old example...
Duke Nukem Finally Forever.
Bulletstorm.
Portal 2.

Games have matured.
Seriously, now you cannot make a hit game by wacky humor, one liners or all cheery.
