So your point is this... as time has gone on less unique articles have been produced.

...yes, how obvious. That has happened in pretty much every medium.

Why has no-one said LittleBigPlanet?

It's a platformer with cute characters. Most people won't say anything about it in terms of innovation because "they don't make platformers any more," no to mention my favorite, "that looks stupid."

As for myself, I'm holding judgment until I actually play it. I'd buy it for the character design if nothing else!
Its a level creator with some platorming and cute characters :p

Visual theme can be innovative too, if you disagree then surely every painting ever is the same. And making gamers make game elements for other gamers with a game, thats been touched on before by halo 3 perhaps but as far as im concerned thats gaming in a new direction.

For those who say that gaming used to be better....they have forgotten the huge and HUGE piles of shit that have been cranked out for the old consoles.

This rant is about a year or two late. And if you really cant find any innovative or unique titles in the last 8 years you need to open your eyes. Dont make me list.
That's cheap... you can't come in and say that and not give examples... it's not fair. besides... what you find as an innovation may be old hat to someone else.

FANBOY WARNING: If I see a reply about how HALO has nothing to do with DOOM and is a unique game I want you to know that I know you haven't been playing video games long enough to know what it is I'm talking about.
DOOM probably founded games like Halo (or at least that's what I've heard), and while i am still a Halo fanboy i'll say that Halo was is good game and leave it at that.

What's the most unique game to come out in the last... oh... eight years?
Shadow of the Colossus, Okami, Little Big Planet and Guitar Hero.

I think what we need is some way to make quality games that can explore deep elements but be made with only a small number of people (50-100 or so) and post them up on a certain website.

Why does a game have to be innovative to be fun?

I notice a lot of mentions of Call of Duty in this thread, did none of you enjoy COD4 then?

Because people get tired of playing "tag" all the time and want to play "hide and seek"

Last 8 years? That's a bit far back, I mean, Guitar Hero seemed pretty innovative.
Back in 2000 there were quite a lot of inventive games. I'd say it's very recently - 2-3 years ago - that they stopped being creative and new.

EDIT: Just wanted to make a Stranglers reference.

But just because you've got tired of "tag", does that make "hide and seek" a better game or just a breath of fresh air that you'll eventually get bored of as well.

We call, say, LBP innovative but will we still do in 2 sequels times? Probably not. But will we still say it's fun? With the team at Media Moecule we most likely will.

Innovation is fleeting, fun is not.

The point is, this discussion is old. I've seen this discussion for ten years already. Everything in the past always seem better. Doesn't mean it actually is.

I personally think that game evolution is developing at a steady rate. New ideas are trickling through, and while they may not be making as big leaps as they used to, that's to be expected when. Certainly, in my opinion, games are still sufficiently different to be fun and be individual experience. Things still come up occasionally which are different enough to earn the coveted 'innovative' badge, but really that's never been what I look at first to decide whether a game's good or not.

However, it is still fairly easy to see why some people think that the supply of good games has dried up. In this console generation not that much has been truly brilliant and new rather than a gimmick, but it always seems like that when you compare it to a massive stack of excellent games refined by a rosy view of the past.

Having a go at someone for trying to look big (which I don't think he was) seems a little hypocritical. After all, you were the one who was showing off how big your game collection is, and saying you know what's fun and what isn't based on how long you've been playing and how hardcore this makes you.
OK... for the umpteenth time... why do you people want to argue. I believe that I've been talking about games that * I * find innovative and original, or actually the multitude that aren't.

This thread isn't about me "telling you how big I am" and then you coming in like a 12 year old defending his 3DO. This is where we compare our comprehensions of reality and what constitutes innovation.

Etc. etc.
I did add something to the discussion. It was in the bit above the quote from you; it's not my fault you chose to ignore it. I'm just saying you seemed to be a bit heavy handed to him, and while I was rude (and I'd like to apologise for that), you can't argue that you weren't. I wasn't trying to argue, which is why I am still holding back on what I could say (and could've said then).

Don't know if anyone has already done this but...

Well, yesterday was such an easy game for you to play
But let's face it things are so much easier today
Guess you need some bringing down
And get you feet back on the grooooooound
Won't you tell me?
Where have all the good games gone?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8A6UScT6Ks

And a game haven't gotten worse, you've gotten older :p

But sure, you have a point, industry is really into generic FPS atm, but there are good games to play, you don't need to play HALO if you don't want to.

Portal, Wii Music and Wii Fit(hell, the whole Wii system, and a ton of games on it), Patapon, World of Goo, Mirror's Edge, LittleBigPlanet, The World Ends With You, Black & White (exactly 8 years ago), Viva Pińata, Madworld (don't know much about it, but people have said it's innovative), Braid, de Blob, echocrome and Foldit, and those are off the top of my head.

I've seen these "new games suck" and "has there been a good game in, like, 8 years, lolz?! (usually innovative meaning that it's automatically a good and fun game)" threads too much, and they're annoying the hell out of me.

AUDIO SURF!

If you want to know what I think the definition of innovation is you only needs to download the demo from Steam, load up your favorite song and go.

Here's my thoughts:

1) Simple Mechanics. The actual physical work to playing a video game is usually just that, work. The graphics, sound, backgrounds and little extras make the game enjoyable, but the mechanics tend to be fairly boring in practice even if the effect on the screen is awesome. Audio Surf's physical mechanic is a simple, but if you're on a fast track (the song determines the speed of the run) you have to work not to let it devolve into an uncontrollable jerk as you try to avoid the grey blocks and hit the colored ones.

2) Variation. There are multiple characters to choose from, like in Forsaken, each one has their own vehicle and special abilities. Unlike Forsaken, most of these are actually usable by any player and the icons and visual cues are exceptionally easy to understand and grasp quickly.

3) MY FAVORITE MUSIC! I haven't played Guitar Hero. Not because I have anything against the game itself but because I take music very seriously. I've never found a music based game that didn't either water it down or force me to listen/play with songs that I've never heard in a genre of music I don't personally appreciate.

Now here comes Audio Surf to save me from all that drivel and put my faith back in music games (hey, if Guitar Hero let me load in my own songs I'd be all over it!). And since the pacing, shape and difficulty of the track is based on the level you play at and the song you inject into the game, you get the experience you want. So, if you put in Meatloaf's "Bat Out Of Hell", you know what you're getting into. I can't wait to try Manowar's "Sting Of The Bumblebee"

4) Fun. The last time I played a game that I instantly and enthusiastically enjoyed, I was grinding away on Yar's Revenge. Just look at this entry! It's nuts!

So go and check this game out. It's fun and quite possibly one of the most innovative games I've ever played. EVER.

The Wii is the most innovative piece(s) of hardware to come out; probably ever.

As for the "all new games suck" line, I didn't say that. All I'm saying is that, with the obscene amount of money that is being thrown around to make games, it seems like there would be more than a handful that actually push the art form forward.
