Ensemble Studios (AKA Age of Empires HQ) closed down a while ago now. No more AoE. Back to topic though....
There's a game coming out called "R.U.S.E", grab the demo of Steam, and take a look?

My kings of RTS genre are two lesser known games: Hearts of Iron 3 and Sins of a Solar Empire.
Both more of a grand strategy style, with Hearts of Iron 3 going right down to "How would you like to oppress your own population?" Though I do find the chains of command a bit hard to manage in HoI3 and end up just managing resources, industry, intel, politics, and theater rather than individual divisions. The AI mods makes the comp quite good at commanding troops, though I still think the German AI lacks some punch.

Hell no, console strategy games is a no-no. I played Halo wars and to my immense satisfaction i hated every minute of it. Consoles will NEVER be able to play RTS games like PC's do unless you stick a USB mouse in (why hasn't this been thought of?)
So much this. It's not like USB mouse isn't supported for consoles already (at least, it's supported for the PS3). You kind of need a keyboard too if you intend to do any kind of micro.

EDIT:

Have you tried Star Wars Empire at War?
If you didn't like Total War, stay away from this. It's basically Star Wars: Total War.

I'm not sure it's just RTSes. I haven't seen any games recently that have me interested, on PC or console.

I think it's less a case of "RTSes are dying" and more a case of "Current games are shit".

Last game that got more than an "Oh. New." out of me was Metro 2033.

Controversial statement :D

Battlefield Bad Company 2. Dear God what a good game. Campaign is meh but the multiplayer is simply brilliant. IF you don't believe me see the 10/10 OXM online rating it got.

However I do see your point, and the future is iffy, either projects like Natal and (Whats the PS3 one?) will revolutionise the gaming industry and we'll all have a blast. OR They will suck and all games will transfer to Natal and there will be even less good new games than before.

Yes i will admit that most RTS games are decided by who has the biggest army or the most resources. I don't like that in the genre and THIS is where I wanna see the innovation come from. If Total War is the best offering for this...

What i'm saying is that why hasn't the industry really made any breakthroughs? Starcraft 2 by most people's admittance will be "Just another rush game"
They did, but then you just complained about it. Dawn of War 2, Sins of a Solar Empire, World in Conflict, Company of Heroes, Men of War, all fantastic example of RTS which tried and succeeded at trying out new elements in the RTS genre.

Again, I'll list a few, even including their Metacritic scores:

Men of War, 80%
Company of Heroes, 93%
Sins of a Solar Empire, 87%
World in Conflict, 89%
Dawn of War 2, 85%

Look em up, they're all great. You're missing out! Company of Heroes is probably the most important and outright best RTS released in years, it really is.

No argument there. Company of Heroes was FANTASTIC. Which was why Dow2 was such a disappointment. Relic had me sold that they were amazing and then they let me down. I will have a look at these others because they sound interesting. Thanks for the help :D

don't really care. the only RTS game i ever found interesting was pikmin, the rest were micro-managing rush a thons where the battle was decided in the first 10 minutes and it takes 2 hours to lose.
If you think Pikmin (i.e. Lemmings clone) is a strategy game then this board isn't for you.

The only RTS games I enjoy are ones that have a twist on a mechanic. I did enjoy the usual affair for a while but they tend to all end up the same.

Warzone 2100 is one of my all time favourites.

It is a very diluted genre with most of the innovations coming early in its lifespan.

It was a shoddy game but I really enjoyed the War Of The Worlds game. Really old now.

Here's a couple other FANTASTIC RTSs that haven't been mentioned:

  • * World in Conflict [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_in_Conflict] (Metacritic score: 89)
    * Company of Heroes [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Company_of_Heroes] (Metacritic score: 93)

By what you've been saying, you'd probably enjoy Company of Heroes (CoH) more then World in Conflict (WiC), as WiC has no base building what-so-ever, whilst CoH still maintains that you need to build a small-ish base. They're both very very enjoyable, definitely two of my favourite RTS games.

There's also Dragonshard [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragonshard], which is a bit older (2005); which is a D&D based RTS - plays like a normal RTS (similar to Warcraft 3) on the top-world, underground it plays more like an RPG. Definitely worth a look in my opinion.

I have a cupboard in my study; it is full of years of amazing RTS games that my dad has accumulated over the years.

Stuff like Age of Empires, Age of Mythology, Empire Earth, Supreme Commander, Command & Conquer 3, Dawn of War, Rise and Fall, Battle for Middle Earth 1/2/ROTWK

Where is the new stuff?

Supreme commander went down the pan with its sequel which to me looks shoddy. Age of empires and Empire Earth both tried to fix what wasn't broken and made some horrific sequels. Tha market for RTS is essentially dead with Microsoft prostituting the PC games market to hawk Xbox 360 games to a different user base.

Does anyone else find this distressing/fine/doesn't care?
Em what about Dawn of War 2?

OT: Star Craft 2 is coming out. Command & Conquer just got rid of base building but it is still a RTS but not in tradtional sense. There are still plenty around maybe they just don't conform to what you think is one.

Edit: Dragonshard and Company of Heroes.

There certainly aren't as many RTS games as there used to be. I've always felt that the RTS genre had 2 leaders. Command and Conquer and Blizzard games. Command and Conquer is officially dead after C&C4 so we can only count on Blizzard for now. Starcraft 2 is very good so far. Any others usually don't get much attention, so that's why there aren't that many overall.

What's MS got to do with it? They're shit with PC gaming and have been for as long as I can remember.

Also: SupCom 2 (now that it's been patched) is apparently really good, Starcraft 2 is coming out soon and wasn't there a new Total War recently (not all an RTS but still)?
