I like to fast travel to Springvale and store my stuff in the mailbox that is right in front of you when it loads, and for sleep I usually would go to that town on the bridge (something with an A) and into the house with the two corpses.

Plain old Megaton is my main house, but I have some heavy things dotted in houses here and there because they were too heavy to carry and I never went back for them.

Mines in megaton but its pretty snazzy as I had the whole town attacking me once so I ran inside and got a fat man out. So now the walls are painted red and there's heads on the bobblehead stand.

Tenpenny tower. Even when i try to be good in that game, I still end up killing someone because I can without many consequences. I would keep stuff all over the place but i'v got Obliviphobia, I just can't bring myself to leave things in areas that aren't mine.

I also kill people because I can because of Oblivion. I get tired of everybody automatically knowing you killed someone even though there were no witnesses, So now i kill someone whenever i get the chance without being discovered(Which also explains why I cant buy black horses anymore, I killed the stable owner in sleep}

Rather boringly Megatown. I've thought about just taking up residence in a shack somewhere, but I'm worried I'll forget where.

Where ever I lay my head, yo.

More precise, on top of a pile of dead bodies I placed by the Whitehouse(?). Kinda cosy.

I have a small den where you find the Explosives Bobblehead near that Broadcast station. I too have a collective instinct.

Megaton. It's got enough spaces for storage, it's well guarded (even if you run inside with 10 Raiders behind you, which makes for an entertaining 3 minutes), and it's got shops all in one convenient location. Plus, you can purchase upgrades, such as My First Medical Station (or whatever it's called).

The area you enter right after the vault, I think it was Springfield. So there's a house where a crazy woman lives, her name had a Silver in it I think. I would kill her by surprise, slit her throat, obviously steal her stuff. My first order of bisiness would be to go to the school and carefully observe the daily activity of the raiders. After a few days I'll raid the school and take my time to steal every valuable thing. Then I go to Megaton and sell most of the junk to Moira (Thank God for stupid people buying all kinds of junk). I would buy supplies there, hire Jericho and construct a route and strategy for getting to Rivet City. Some trade there, selling stolen crap for caps untill I have good relations with Rivet City. Setting up my shop would be the next step. Selling premium quality weapons only, Jericho would be the lead looter for my shop. I'll send him to the Super Duper Mart, little cities and such, against simple raiders it would be an easy job for an organized team lead and trained by a hardened military person. Then I'll pull some strings in Rivet City so more people are able to come and live to the city. Maybe even an advetising campaign for my weapons. The other weapon shop will be out of business very soon. After I earn a truckload of caps, Tenpenny Tower is my target, if old man Tenpenny doesn't sell me the place, a nice execution will take place, like in the Youtube videos. My image will suffer greatly if I don't allow ghouls, business would drop and I might even get a hitman on my tail (or ass). With everyone happy I will probably develop my business and buy other vital Wasteland areas. Virtually I could be the Mayor of Washington. The Brotherhood of Steel will recieve massive funding and eventually capture the Enclave. From there I'll order the global liberation of The US and A. So it's a big story. But eventually Tenpenny Tower.

Does gear not dissapear after a few days if you leave it in random places and containers?

I thought Megaton and Tennpenny were the only safe spots?

Or am I too used to playing Oblivion?
I think you can just leave it around, but I'm not sure. There's storage compartments like cabinets and drawers that you can put stuff in to make sure it doesn't go away, I know that for a fact. That's why I have my house. I had a minigun that I never used but didn't want to get rid of because I might need it one day so I put it in a dresser next to my bed.

I think you've inspired me to go out into the wasteland grabbing everything I can and just drop it all in the bathroom of my house. You, my friend, are a genius.

I make my home in Megaton. I tried Tenpenny Tower...but hated the people living there, and I don't like ghouls...so...

I also have a few house mods I downloaded scattered around the wasteland (I have two that are really close to Megaton), and a few storage places.

My house in Megaton is full of everything I've been collecting..........and now the game crashes whenever I try and enter.

I can't be arsed to do it all again, so I stopped playing.
