We probably won't hear anything about it until 2011. I'm sure that at E3 Valve will only talk about Portal 2, since it would take all the hype around Portal 2 away if they would mention ep3. I think Valve has never sold two fullprice games in the same year. I'd say 3-4 months after the Portal 2 release, we'll hear some solid info about ep3.

Honestly I don't think the game is ever going to come out. Now before you call me some kind of troll think about it, the half-life series in general is one of if not the highest rated game series to ever come out, and the majesty of it keeps valve in epic status amongst valves fans. If valve were to released a negatively reviewed game it could be devastating for them. So they are doing exactly what i would to, release and expand multiple other IP's like Portal, Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress. Add on the fact that an important voice actor is now deceased and i wouldn't expect EP3 to come out for a very long time.

Though thats purely my opinion
Considering how EP 2 ended, I don't think it'd be a good idea to just cut off the story there. It would be alienating us, the fans who follow the story, and that would really suck since there are still a load of unanswered questions in the Half-Life universe.

I heard at one point they started over on the story because they didn't think it was good enough. (I don't know how reliable the source was.)

I will personally wait till the end of the universe as long as they do a good job.

Valve has said it won't be in 2010.
I think they said it won't be in any of the 2000's
December 21, 2012 = End of the world = Release of Half Life 2: Episode 3
Hopefully I'll have a couple of hours to play it before "Poof".

But Yeah I can't wait till the next episode I have seen concept art and it looks awesome.

There's a pretty good timetable for Valve release times.

I did not really check the internet for facts here intensely, but how long has it been?

I mean, cliffhangers are fine and all and that whole episode format seemed to be pretty cool considering the length of said episodes (plus nice gimmicks such as Portal in the Orange Box), but I can hardly remember who was hung above what cliff and where on earth that cliff was.

Now don't get me wrong - I appreciate the good storytelling, the lovingly designed characters and the fine mix of action and tension and I can only guess how much work, time and money must have gone into that so far, but they have already been talking about Half-life 3 and here I was thinking that they might have missed a little episode there.

Does anyone still care?
Let me tell you about a little thing called "Valve Time". [http://www.halflife2.net/wiki/index.php/Valve_time]

Valve Time - Actual Time

Tomorrow - At 10:00 Pacific

Shortly - Sometime next week

Next Week - In 3 months

In the coming weeks - At a completely undisclosed time

We're finishing this feature up now - We've just finished the concept and we'll start working on it in the coming weeks (see above)

In the upcoming months - Never

Coming soon - When Duke Nukem Forever [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke_Nukem_Forever] goes gold

No.

Every time someone takes a crack at Newell for being fat, he adds a week onto the "development" time for EP3. So I decided to focus on what's important: Speculating on when the fuck the Engineer update will land.

I always suspected Newell was a sadist...

It's been almost 3 years now. Perhaps someone traveled back in time and deleted Ep3 from the surface of history.

Jesus fucking christ can this topic be a bannable offence please?

Look at all the past Valve games development times, realise they have a totally different definition of episodic content and hopefully you'll realise actively waiting for it is pointless.

I just want the engie update for now, and even that's going to be a while.

It's a combination of things already suggested in this thread and the Schrodinger's cat of video games.

At any given point in time Episode 3 is simultaneously released and not yet released.. both states are equally real. However, starting a thread asking "When will it be released?" not only causes one of those realities to collapse (you can guess which one) but it also forces Gabe Newell to add on a further 6 weeks development time.

Pretty sure that when it does come out I'll be giddily buying it on release day, but until then the wait isn't difficult at all. Plenty of other things to be occupied with - both at and away from the old keyboard.

EDIT: Lifted from ign.com:

An e-mail was sent out to gaming press today that announced the cancellation. Read the entire message below:

Dear Subject Name Here,

Aperture Science is pleased to inform you that we have partnered with Valve to announce the gala CANCELLATION of the June 14 Portal 2 event at the Regal Theater. The event will be replaced by a surprise. And even though the cancellation of the event certainly counts as a surprise, we are pleased to further announce that the cancellation of the event is not THE surprise. However, per International treaties regarding the definition of the word "surprise", of which both Aperture Science and Valve are signatories, the time, date and content of the actual surprise will only become available as you experience the surprise.

If you'd like to ask fruitless questions about the E3 Portal 2 surprise or, more fruitfully, schedule an appointment to attend a Portal 2 screening at the Valve booth during E3, please contact Valve's Special Envoy to Surprises, Doug Lombardi.

Thank you for [[RECORD SCRATCH!!!]]

PS: The surprising record scratch is also not the surprise.
Make of that what you will. Also make what you will of the fact that I'm linking that to an Ep3 thread.
