I was two hours on my shift at work. I was in the US Air Force doing my job. We got a call from our flight office to turn on the news after the first plane hit. Needless to say work halted long enough to see what was going on. We thought it was some sort of an accident. When the Pentegon was hit we got another call. The entire AF went Delta. We were locked down. We scrambled to clean up everything, did a security sweep, locked every access point. And stayed in our building for 16 hours.
Since work was permanently interupted all we had to do is watch the TV. We saw the second tower hit. When they fell, we got another call saying we are under attack. Do not go outside not even to our vehicles. Our base was told to stay indoors so Security Forces can do their job in looking for threats. In our buildings we had control because we knew who was supposed to be there. Outside SF had control, but they don't know everybody. They have to check everyone they see walking around to see if they were allowed on base . In uniform or not. We were not allowed to be outside to distract them. Also in case of a sniper or other attack.
Nobody could get off base. And nobody could get on. All persons that were due for work were called and told to stay at home until further notice. We were also told to not wear our uniform to or from work for weeks. Any USAF member wearing their uniform offbase publically would be in trouble. Something that the USAF likes us doing to show pride to our local community was all of a sudden taboo.
That was a very wierd time in general. It was even more so for someone in the military. Although not as wierd compared to what the people in New York were living.
