GTA III and IV: essentially New York (northeastern US)
GTA Vice City: essentially Miami (southeastern US)
GTA San Andreas: essentially San Fransisco, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas (southwestern US)

Conclusion GTA V (on the off chance they decide to call it that) shall be set in the as-yet untouched corner, the northwest, which leads me to believe: Seattle. I sense awesomeness in the air as Redmond, home of everybody's favorite operating system manufacturer, is a large suburb of Seattle. Whacking the people on Bill Gates enemies list? Kappa Coffee houses (from GTA 3) on every corner, a la Starbucks? An hilarious interpretation of the Space Needle? How could that not be fun?

Sure, I'd love to see GTA surrogate Chicago, what with real Chicago being 30 miles down the road from me and all, but I really talked myself into Seattle there.
That's actually my favorite idea of all the ones mentioned. Partly because I live in Seattle, and partly because it's an American city that doesn't really look like anything they've done before.

Well, this thread is huge, so I didn't read very much of it, so forgive me if everybody's already saying this, but considering that they've covered "New York," "Miami," and "Los Angeles," I'm surprised that they haven't gone to a Vegas-esque city yet.

EDIT: I did notice on this page, some talk about a female protagonist. I think it would be a good idea, actually. It's a sandbox game, so you can be as floozy or as rug-munching as you want her to be. Or maybe some of us will actually play her as a respectable femme-fatale. ;) But I think it would be hilarious if you had the option to make money by whoring yourself out, and then, when you get out of the car, the driver gets out and tries to kill you to take his money back.

Of course, I find this funny in the sense of gamers' karmic comeuppance, and not because I think killing hookers is hilarious. Necessarily.

I'd like to revisit London in 3D. Not sure how much international appeal there would be though. Ofcourse, it would deal with stereotypes, but I don't think Rockstar would have the typical American view because Rockstar North are not American.

Noob.

It's almost guaranteed that the next city they'll use will be in America, seeing as a major part of the game is commentary on our culture. The most obvious choice, of course, would be Chicago, although I personally think it would be better if they pulled another San Andreas and included Detroit as well. A lot of people mentioned Seattle; while there are certainly a lot of directions they could take that, Seattle isn't really known for crime problems/gangs. I'd still play it, though.

If we could get a foreign city, though, I'd be down for Tokyo. That would be awesome.

I don't know about you, but I don't drive on the right side of the road in GTA anyway.

I'd have to say either Israel; Brazil; Sicily,Italy; or Moscow, Russia. Although it would cool if they made GTA take place in Nazi, Germany during World War II.

Im not sure but I think that "we Yanks" are one of the only countries that drive on the right hand side of the road. so if anyone drives on the wrong side of the road its us.

anyway I would like to see it in some European country that would be a nice change of pace.
People only drive on the left hand side of the road in Britain, New Zealand and a few other countries.

Slightly more than that, and you forgot Australia. Way more countries drive on the right though.

Now I think about it, it should not be set in Australia. The ESRB would probably ban it completely.

I agree there - it always gets me.
And it should be anywhere else apart from London...

because whenever the english are included in any sort of american media that is how we are portrayed, annoyingly.
GTA isn't made by Americans.

Whilst I'd like to see a modern GTA in England, it would probably have limited appeal to people who aren't Brtish. So ultimately I feel that the series should stay in America.
