The answer is deceptively simple: Blizzard will create the WoW-killer.
Kind of depressing, really.

Nothing will kill WoW, good MMOs have been made that aren't WoW they just aren't as popular.

I can't wait for Guild Wars 2, but it won't kill WoW.

Watch the Extra Credits on MMOs.

I highly doubt all the promises that ToR is making, but I'll wait and see.

The WoW killer will come from Blizzard. And only Blizzard. At this point, it's not just an MMO, it's a pop culture phenomenon, which means they don't even need advertising anymore.
IM pretty sure is gonna be call world of starcraft
maybe... Starcraft Universe?
Diabolo Underworld?

Why does something have to kill WoW? Surely it's possible just to exist alongside it.
not with mmo's...there arent enough people willing to pay 30 a month for 2 diffrent games. and most people who play wow play ina group...a group of friends that even if they move servers will stillplay wit each other..and 1 person alone making that move makes the person feel almost left out because they are forced to discover this whole new world by them selves...most people arent into that

WoW can't be killed over night. To even stand a chance, future games like Knights of the Old Republic or Diablo 3 need to be as awesome as promised by the developers and not just some WoW Clones. If they manage to avoid doing WoW clones, that action alone will slowly chip away at WoW and it's subscribers.

Also if we think about it, WoW can actually kill itself! And that can happen when Blizzard will horribly fail with one of their WoW expansions. So far all of them were great, but a day will come when one of the expansions will fail and WoW will implode and die!

Otherwise Blizzard will never stop making expansions and why should they if they have success doing so.

Why is everything concetrated on MMORPG?
I mean we could have MMOFPS,MMORTS,MMOpuzzle games MMO everything.
Blizzard has alreaduy eaten up the market for RPG's I would contest other studios for something different.

Probably World of Warcraft 2 or Universe of Starcraft or whatever they end up naming it, but I couldn't care much less; I play WoW two weeks every 5 or 6 months, until I'm bored with it and play something else.

Like my view on the "possibly new" Star Wars trilogy, what would both be innovative in a way that WOW isn't and appeal to the group that is already happily droning away in WOW?
Blizzard kinda has the MMORPG throne in an iron grip, and it doesn't look like it's slipping.
With other genres, well, look at APB or EVE Online or that one MMORTS that I already forgot about. They take what appears to be a neccessity for MMOs, slap their genre du jour over it, and it sinks like lead because people who like the idea of playing with a lot of people already play WOW and the rest aren't that much into that kinda thing.

And that, ladies and gents, were my two cents.

As someone who has played MMOs for years and years gamers want to swap MMOs after a few years of playing them.

WoW players are going to be looking for the next big thing, and GW2 or ToR will probably give it to them.

Will it kill WoW, no. But it will hurt their playerbase and they will probably have to lower prices in order to stay competitive. An MMO can't afford to lose it's playerbase.

I wouldn't doubt it may come from Europe... but I'm betting my money on some thing from Bathesda, Obsidian, or.... um........ umm...... GRRRAAA, damn, I can't think of another name.

This Thread again? Its been...about 1-2 Months now since the last, cant you use the Search Function or simply stop bothering with that Question? For that matter, why always WoW? How about a AoC Killer, or a CoX Killer, or a EVE Killer? Noone bothers with those because why? They arent marketing like Blizzard? Cause they dont got Ads with Mr. T?

Give it a rest already, a MMO, no matter its genre or title will stay for a while and then simply disappear, not entirely, but it will fade into obscurity when a better or simply newer Game comes out. The reason WoW is so successful is simple, they streamlined the Concept of the most accessible MMO and basicly got rich with it. There is no Innovation in WoW, they simply took the Basics and polished them to such a degree that it simply succeeded on those merits alone.

And WoW is already dying, it has been ever since its release, Players quit left and right, whole Servers practically depopulated after a few Months. Blizzard even merged Servers, because the first Rush was over and at the end, there was nothing there to keep someone playing. Of course there was Endgame Content, Raids, big bad Bosses, lots of Items, but after a while you grow tired of the Mechanic that drives it, which is inherently all WoW is. Get the Game, get to maxlevel, do raid, get equipment, go to next raid, get even better equipment and then go to the next raid after that to get even better equipment than you had the first two times. Its literally only a hunt for the next best Set of Items from Dungeon X, beyond that is nothing to keep anyone interested.

Blizzard claims to have what 11 Million? 12 Million Subscribers? They dont, those Numbers are cherry-picked, based on how many People ever bought that Game and actively played, even if only for the free Month that was included in the Purchase. Of course that Number looks huge and very good on Paper, but there arent that many still playing. WoW is dying, slowly but surely, because, while it still goes on and they add Content, Players will be leaving for new Shores sometime, no matter if the next Game is better than WoW or not in those Terms, WoW had its Time and that Time is fading, sure it will take a few Years, but it will happen.
