Legend, Four Crystals of Trazere. The father of dungeon crawlers and the foundations of a very complex spell making system. Of recent, Magicka has adopted an evolved version of it - so Legend could adopt these qualities whilst retaining the difficulty, random encounter system, loot system etc.
This game could also easily have an online component, recruiting and training monsters for your banner, then facing off against other people's hordes. Equally, co-operative play could be added with up to four people taking control of a different class.
Some work will need to be done to make the Berserker as deep as the Runemaster, but I think it is easily achievable. Typing this now, I'm curious as to why it hasn't been done. I have hopes though since games like Syndicate have been redone.
Cannon Fodder. Top down army 'em up with an insane level of difficulty - bordering on impossible the first time round and skimming around unfair the rest.
Again, a game that could benefit from co-operative play - but not necessarily competitive.
Wing Commander. Space combat at its finest. Recurring theme, but co-operative and competitive could easily be worked into this.
Project Sylpheed is both the closest and the biggest insult to this game in the modern era - but in the right hands I believe this to be slow burning niche hit.
Each of the above games, whilst excellent in my opinion, would definitely need be downloadable titles to maximise profitability and subsequently viability.
