Which Classic Game Had the Best Graphics?

When people think of video games, the norm now is games with 3D graphics such as the Call of Duty games and even the more recent installments of classics like Mario and Sonic. But, back when computers resembled a box and cost as much as a car, we had games with 8-bit and 16-bit "sprites". Yet, down the line games began to become more advanced, not just in technology but also graphics-wise. Which poses the question: which classic game do you believe had the best graphics?

To me, I think Final Fantasy 6 (aka Final Fantasy 3) for the Super Nintendo had some amazing backgrounds and sprites. Even though the characters were super dimensional, it was definitely a long way from the first game. It's also funny to think this was the last game Square made with sprites before they decided to go 3D with 7 and so on.

I never had much of a selection of NES games, the best in the collection was probably Mike Tyson's Punch Out!!

I'll have to go with this. Mind you I only played it while in a hospital bed for a few days.

Truth be told, graphics don't bother me when it comes to classic games. I can tolerate the pixellated glory of Super Mario Brothers, or I can go for the wonderfully animated Earthworm Jim.

Just saying, Chrono Trigger came out after FF3/6 and still used sprite animation... also I'd have to say Chrono Trigger for the best sprites of the 16-bit era. They actually had more animations then FF6.
Ooh, that was another great one, too! And true, the sprites for that one did have more animation than the characters in FF6.

Quality of graphics isn't about technology; it's about graphic design. I just finished re-playing the 1998 Metal Gear Solid; it might have some pixellated textures, but it still looks great because the graphic design is so good. It certainly looks a lot better than a more technically advanced game with shitty art design like Morrowind.

Yeah, was gonna say the same thing.

Actually was hoping this thread would be for 8bit games only. Graphics got a lot better when they hit 16bit consoles.

Myst. I remember that game having ridiculous graphics back in the day when it was released. So i went on google to see what it looked like and they actually aren't too bad by today's standards.

Before I even read all the way through your post I was thinking "FF6." Great minds think alike. When they didn't have "wow, look at all the polygons!", they had to rely on beautiful renditions given the available technology...and Final Fantasy VI is the very pinnacle of that art style.

I guess Metal Gear Solid on the Playstation. Kingdom Hearts is still impressive to this day, if that's old enough to count, sometimes, anyway.
