Some very worthy choices in this thread. Of course, working at a developer like Blizzard or Bioware is mighty tempting, but I would like to add another name into the mix, which might be a pretty unconventional choice:
PopCap
Why, you ask? Well, they make some pretty good games (I mean, who does not love Plants vs. Zombies?), they are pretty successful financially and in contrast to nearly all the other studios already mentioned, they are still
completely independent. They are a separate company still led by its founders, with no need of financial backing by a publisher because they are highly profitable and thus financially able to stand on their own. That means no publisher deadlines, no forced sequels because your mother company needs some third quarter revenue, etc.
Sure, some of the bigger and better known studios already mentioned have a good amount of leeway from their publisher/parent company and do awesome games I would be thrilled to work on, but do not be fooled, even a studio giant like Bioware has to follow some strategic decisions from their parent companies, regardless of what they think of it. How else do you explain that DLC epidemic newer Bioware titles seem to exhibit? And don´t get me started on Activision and Bobby Kotick
So, PopCap would be my choice I guess, because they do great games, have complete independence in their decisions as they have no parent company and they share one of the important traits of great gaming studios: You feel that they take the time and effort to really polish their games even on tiny details and I firmly believe this is a sign that a developer cares about his product and pours a lot of effort into it. Sounds like a good way to work on a game
