So, I've been thinking... there hasn't been many ideas for any tactical games lately. In fact, there hasn't been many at all. Name off some games where you have to THINK before you do something.

Splinter Cell. I haven't played Conviction but the ones before seem to need thought before action.

Also Hitman if you are going for a stealthy rather than shooty way of playing.

Thats exhausted my games collections that require thought... darn my reflexes making shooters easy.

Homeworld 2:

You have to account for a third demension, resource gathering, warping, an expansive rock-paper-sizor system, research, boarding, etc... it's brainmelting at first.

Rome Total War:

Any kind of direct charge against an experienced opponent and you'll get annihilated.
I also love that it's more timing based than rock-paper-sizor.
The morale system's great.

Not even STRATEGY games these days have much of that. A few, but not many. The RTS genre should get rid of the S, for the most part.

The latest game that actually required tactical thought was Operation Flashpoint. Not the best, but the most recent, I believe.

As far as large scale tactical goes, you can't beat Supreme Commander.

The game is advertised as a strategy game, but I've played Supreme Commander, SC: Forged Alliance, and SupCom 2. There's not so much strategy involved as just large scale tactics.

Persona 4. Not technically a "strategy" game, but it certainly requires one to think. The amount of thought and strategy that has to be put into some of these tedious boss battles really challenges a player to manipulate the battle field and will brutalize anyone who isn't prepared.

i tried that game and it kicked my rear end in 3 dimensions!
I just couldn't seem to get the hang of it at all.

Ehm, got to go with either Fire Emblem or Advance Wars I think. In some parts, the AI sucks though.

Yes! Finally someone agrees with me. I hate all these newer dumbed down "Tom Clancy" titles, (Cough cough Vegas) they don't even deserve his name because he has close to no input on the games. At least under Red Storm Entertainment they were more realistic.

Sins of a Solar Empire, without a doubt.
Supreme Commander Forged Alliance. (not Supcom 2, that's shite in every regard; it's as tactical as cooking, in that it's formulaic rather than strategic, and less than half as rewarding.)

I don't mean to berate on SoaSE, but all I really end up doing is forming large attack groups and the occasional defense group. Not really tactical, just a matter of outnumbering your opponent. Good game, but still...

1. Operation Flashpoint Cold War Crisis
2. ArmA ACE mod
3. ArmA 2 ACE mod
4. Infiltration
5. Any Rainbow Six up to and including Raven Shield
6. All Ghost Recons before they moved to third person.

Those are all great action games. For me, the tactical strategy games are even more compelling. Silent Storm and X-COM UFO Defense are two of my favorites.

Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising - It should be a bit harder, but its the closest ive seen to acute realism in a shooter. Now if the enemies knew how to point and shoot without dislocating their elbows and hitting the tree behind you :)

In all seriousness, it forces you to think and be careful.
