I nominate Battlefield: Bad Company 2, for trying to rip off MW2s story, and succeeding in the considerable task of coming up with something worse.
Don't forget that they completely abandoned the story of Bad Company 1, even though it was actually unique in the video game space.

Every Unreal Tournament story ever. Love the multiplayer, but the stories suck.

I just said I quite liked the original Halo, how can I even be a Halo hater?
And I gave a bunch of reasons why the later Halo games have bad stories in that wall of text it appears you missed.

That's like expecting someone to play every game in existance until completion, which is obviously impossible.
However Halo 3 has the worst story out the games I've played, the runners up would be 2 and Reach, along with a bunch of other shooters that take themselves way too seriously.
And then finishing your post effectively saying I have an 'irrational hatred' even after giving many valid reasons for my dislike and saying that I do indeed quite like part of the franchise?

Seriously?

Super Mario Bros.

The whole game had an overly simplistic story (Guy goes to save princess from evil overlord) with no real build up other than seeing some douche in the end of every boss battle, telling you that the Princess is in another castle. How stupid is that?! It's also riddled with so many plot holes, that your main character practically (and sometimes literally) falls into them. I can't get into this character, seeing as he never actually speaks. That's the other problem in the game! Only two characters ever talk! Hello? It's called dialogue, people! All in all, SMB has the WORST story in video game history, I say.

Well, isn't it olbvious? Mario, with it's unrelatable characters, unrealistic geographical content and unexplained motives.

I'd point out Borderlands, but I don't think it was that bad, the ending was fucking dumb, but I still liked it. I feel like if I say Mario it would be a cop-out, and honestly, no one plays it for the story.

I'd have to go with pokemon, the story in those games are just stupid, it's ALWAYS some group trying to take over the world or fuck it up for everyone else.

Bayonetta's was pretty horrible too.

Modern Warfare 2. Does not really need one, I went through the game like WOO THIS IS FUN, wait why a I putting a breach in this wall, why a i running through this school. Long story short Modern Warfare 2 Great game, Overhyped, but a meh story at best, an WICKED ACTIONY CUT-SCENES.

Left 4 Dead. One of my favorite games, but the story could of been so good, and there are soo many questions un answered. Whya re the 4 Immune, why are the tanks made.

Pokemon. Okay lets just get this out of the way. The first few pokemon games were fun. but the cow that they milk that game has been milked dry. at least try a different story. Same thing.
Start in town, get first pokemon. complete the gym leaders fighting your rival every so often. Near the end get the legendary pokemon. Then fight the gym four. AND TWO FRIGGIN IDENTICLE POKEMON GAMES ARE RELEASED ABOUT EVERY 2 YEARS.

This thread is about looking at the worst stories in all video games. You continually assert against people who have tried to say that the series does not deserve this title, implying that this game is so bad, it should be taken out of the personal context that the OP seems to set forth ("the worst game story in your opinion") and have it considered one of the worst as general fact.

You've conflicted yourself here, stating that you don't find all of Halo atrocious, then you go on to attack other's beliefs that the Halo franchise does not, in fact, have a bad story line. Perhaps you are trying to say that only your idea of when Halo is commendable is valid, or what?

What is your purpose in so adamantly perusing people who are defending Halo?

In preparation for the Oscars, I feel as if I need to nominate games. The award for Worst Plot are...

Metroid: Other M - The game's plot made me stop playing the game almost as soon as I created a save file. If it gets better, I'm sorry for my rash nomination (but I haven't seen much support for it either).

Sin & Punishment: Star Successor - They speak English, they give subtitles, yet I still have no idea what they are saying.

Need for Speed: Underground - "Yo Yo Yo! Le's drive 'roun dis 'hood, claimin' our land back from those foneys. Oh, u can com to, hot ladee. Le's go!" Can't I just drive? That's what I wanted to play, not some GTA clone in which you couldn't get out of the car.

Klonoa (Wii) - I was actually kind of happy with the way it ended.

Blue Dragon (X360) - I bet it gets better eventually, but the story moved so slowly a snail in molasses could beat the plot line in a race.

And the award goes to...

Need for Speed: Underground! This game had the unique distinction of having the whole "ghetto" twist destroy this game, whether it was the battle for "land" to having to scour the "land" to find specific short races. It played alright, but to scrap the ideas that they had from Need for Speet: Hot Pursuit 2 (a great game) to accommodate this "plot" is shameful.

In B4 people saying Halo to look cool... damn too late.

While I don't really know what game had the worst story I do know that anyone that says Halo is fucking retarded or an "insert game here" fanboy. Probably some game back on the old NES or something.
You've essentially proved you are a fanboy, well done. Now explain why Halo is so great.
Um... Not really? The only thing anyone's proven here is that you're blatantly a Halo hater who invisions themselves reasonable on the topic, because you take offense to someone saying that Halo isn't bad, but instead of pointing out why its bad, you make them defend their view.

Halo is alright. Not a pinnacle of the arts, but its fine. A lot of the characters are pretty generic, but in the "srs, gritty" filter that one wears when partaking in the Halo universe, they're quite believable.

And the actual story? What pretty much happens in Halo is:
Humans are nearly wiped out by alien covenant
the MC destroys a Halo, setting in motion a simultaneous civil war amongst the alien covenant and the rise of evil parasite aliens.
The Bad aliens of the covenant try to destroy everything, and good alien rebels join forces to stop bad alien parasites and bad covenant aliens.

That's not a bad plot. Its more than just servicable, especially by video game standards. I mean, some of the most beloved games follow paper-thin plots: "Witch captured sister. Go find golden jigsaw puzzle piece mcguffins so you may fight aforementioned witch."

He's right in not wanting Halo to be called one of the "worst stories in video games," because it is not, and the only reason to, out of all interactive digital media to try to make such a claim is because said person has an irrational hatred for the franchise.
Woo hoo! Well said, and beat me to it. I think on the Escapist, it's cool to hate Halo, especially if you say that the characters are boring and the plot is full of cliches. He did make one point I agree with: the Believe marketing campaign. I was hoping for a few elements of the diorama of soldiers dying to be a little more representative of 3's gameplay, but whatevs.

As for the worst game story evar, I'm going to give it to the whole JRPG genre. Maybe it's some cultural divide I'm not getting, but ever JRPG my friends ever showed me has had stories I had to look up online because I thought my friends were joking when they described them to me. Or if made an August Rush video game, that would win by default.

Remember kids, if you like something, then you're a fanboy and you SUCK!

Pac-man.

Seriously; funny yellow circle eats white dots and occasionally ghosts, as he explores a nameless dungeon filled with fruit. What the hell?

Although I have to say that Valkyrie Chronicles is high on my list. Not the meta story line, I like the cool WW2 parallels and even the mystic stuff. But the scene to scene stuff is just so unbelievably stupid.

Great lines such as "Thanks fish," and logic such as "Look goat poop! That means there's a game trail here. Let's roll the tank down it!" all combined to just irritate me. And then they add a pig with wings. A flying pig. Are you kidding me?!

Still fun to play though.
*wipes tear of laughter away* aaaaah it wouldnt be a JRPG without the sheer undiluted mindfuckery aspect.

OT: Any game wherein the main character is killed at the end. Just think to myself....well what was the frigging point in that. I could have just let myself get ripped apart by murderer No. 16060000000000 and it would'nt have made a blind bit of difference.

Final Fantasy: Dirge of Cerberus

There is nothing. NOTHING that compares to the level of bullshit that game provides.
Deus Ex Machina? It's everywhere.
Villains with no clear motivations? Check.
An unlikable punktard who happens to be carrying a MacGuffin that didn't exist until the game was created? Oh yeah.
Plot points and characters come and go at will. The writing has no sense of brevity, the characters are a creepy mix of stereotype

This is some weapons-grade bullshit, and quite easily the worst story out there among what I've played (and I've played a SHIT TON of games from every genre imaginable).

Now, some could name games that didn't have much of a story (like, virtually all the NES-era/prior titles), but there's a fundamental difference between not having a plot, and having a plot that had thousands of man-hours put into it and it making no fucking sense at all.

Dirge of Cerberus was the final nail in Squeenix's coffin for me, and a taste of the ineptitude that was to follow for years after (and ongoing today).
If you don't believe me, just find an LP for it. See if you can find one without the synopsis too, just to see if your brain is twisted enough to comprehend it.

Jesus christ people...shut up about fucking Halo.
Yes, I agree, the plot is crap, but, credit where credit is due, the bungie writers stretch it out rather well in a way that makes sense once you get over the whole "actually, there is MANY HALO!" plot device.
I agree that the characters are, for the most part, 2D and unrelatable.
I agree that the millions of books 'n backstory bullshit should be banished.
However, it has no-where near the worst story of any game.
It just has the worst fanbase and the worst haters.

Also, worst story that I've played recently has to be Just Cause 2.
It does grow on you though...like moss, or fungus.

Actually, no.
Need for Speed Carbon.
That shit was POWER RETARDED.

I love how I can win almost any kind of 'worst [blank] in a game' thread with one simple word.

Drakenguard.

If you understand, then you understand. If you don't, then consider yourself lucky. *shudder*
It had a story? Thank God that explains the dead babies and incest in my dreams afterward. Damn repression. :)

Super Mario Galaxy 2. Like Yahtzee says, its all about getting some "cake" but did everyone get a case of amnesia or something?

By slaughtering as many innocent civilians as possible.
