The constant sequels of games (Even if they are good ones) are becoming tedious beyond belief.

So fellow escapees, which games do you think should stop already?

I personally think the halo series, I mean ODST was just Awful and Reach was ok I guess, and now they are developing Halo 4! when will it end?!
God this answer is predictable. I knew the OP was going to be this AGAIN before I clicked the thread.

Reach has better graphics, gameplay and AI than halo 3. It has different characters. ODST is a different style of gameplay, and the story is told though flashbacks. Halo 4 has new enemies, settings, none of the weapons are returning, it's being made by a different studio so everything will be different. There's been the addition of Firefight and armour abilities. Every Halo has new vehicles and new types of enemies to face.

I really wouldnt call that tedious. A lot of people buy it, and if it's making profit they're not going to end it.

The Tomb Raider franchise. As much as I love it because I've played it since it first came out pretty much, it has well outstayed its welcome. I'm gonna get the new game that's coming out soon but that had better be the last one. I mean, I don't know how many times they've changed Lara's backstory; from being disowned to her mother dying in a plane crash. The last two games just annoy me now with the story, ugh.

EDIT: Oh aye and Final Fantasy. I am sick of seeing it, I swear. Then again, Squenix are bringing out the new Tomb Raider game, lol. Mind you, I reckon they should hurry up with Kingdom Hearts 3, as, uh, ashamed as I am to admit to it, haha.

Also most recycled titles that Nintendo keep bringing out. I've had enough of Zelda. Lemme just find the SNES scart to start playing Link to the Past again, hah.

Even I have to admit they need to put TR down... well until they can find a good (preferably British) developer anyhow.

Thing is about FF and Resi, two series people have mentioned, they both have the potential to return to their roots and make games that play like the classics/appease the fans rather than trying there hardest to bring something new every time. I'd glady play another badly translated turnbased FF game again or another survival horror Resi.

Series that do need to be put down are probably the majority of cover based, recharge health shooters, they have more than outstayed their welcome.

I also think Final Fantasy needs to stop. Although, I would not be opposed to them revamping the earlier titles for the 360 and PS3.

This isn't really a problem for games with self-contained stories (I feel), such as Final Fantasy, because it's not as if the plot is being torn to shreds (unless we're talking about the FF7 canon lololol) and we are provided with a new story and new gameplay each time. The only thing carried over is the "idea" of Final Fantasy, which I think is still fantastic even if Square hasn't been able to consistently live up to that idea of late. This can be equated to games with spiritual successors - think System Shock to Bioshock etc.

It does become a problem with series like Resident Evil where the story is continually drawn out across 5 or however many games, because it inevitably becomes convoluted where the developer has had to add elements to the plot in order to 1. create a new story while 2. connect the new to the old. Therefore, I only really have a beef with this category of games - and even then only because franchises I grew up with are being soiled in order to make a quick buck.

"Spiritual successors" allow developers to maintain the identity of the previous title, whilst simultaneously adding to the gameplay and creating a story that doesn't need to concern itself with any previous canon or fanservice. They should be the way forward, rather than constant sequels that are unnecessary.

Call of Du- oh why do I bother.

I think Final Fantasy has yet to explore all it's possibilities yet, however I wish they'd do something a little different now (but eh...not XIII different, good different).

Resident Evil should die. Silent Hill with it, they need to change pace.

I actually feel Pokemon should have stopped some time ago but I'm loath to fight an army of children so that can stay I guess.

Halo is first though, without a doubt. I confess I disliked it anyway but I could see the arc at least, it should have stopped when it was ahead, it's gotten even worse now.

Halo, seriously, it should have ended with 3, when they said it would.

Call of Duty, either end it, or make a new damn engine. I like the games, but I'm getting really bored of the same gameplay.

Final Fantasy, just Final Fantasy.

Seriously? Sonic is Sega, man, not Nintendo. Petty, I know, but this is common knowledge in the gaming world!

And, OT...nothing to add. although I am kinda interested to see what happens with Halo 4, if they do it right.

I've never understood this sentiment that a video game series has gone on "too long." How are we as a video game community poorer or worse off because they're making another Halo? Or another Final Fantasy? Or another Call of Duty?

If people did not want the games, they wouldn't buy them.

I, for one, would have been sad if Capcom had decided they were done making Resident Evil games after RE 3. It would have been a shame for Nintendo to stop making Zelda games after Ocarina of Time. And I would have missed out on a lot of fun nights with friends playing CoD: MW2 had Activision decided they were done after CoD 4.

If you want a series to stop, then stop supporting it with your money. And if you have already done that, then please let those who still enjoy those games enjoy them, rather than wish away series you supposedly don't care about.

Halo. ODST and Reach where good but they where kinda pushing it. 3 more Halo's is going over the top.
And I have to disagree with everyone saying that CoD should end. Yes, Infinity Ward basically puts crap on a disk and calls it Call of Duty, but I like Treyarch's work. I mean, have you played Zombies?

Well when you have on average released more games per year than the main series of Final Fantasy we have to have a word with you about over saturation. The problem with the IW dev team is that it was basically molested and there is nothing left. IW was fine until CoD 4. Sure the spawn system was never that great or even good and there were a few imba weapons(P90 and PPsH and Thompson to a small degree. This forum is the first I have ever heard complaints about M16 so I won't include it but mention it "briefly"). Remember IW made CoD what it was today through CoD 2 and 4 and until recently Treyarch has been living in their shadow.

OT: I don't think any of these series should right out die but they need to take a cold shower and long hard look at themselves in the mirror and see what they have become;
CoD
Final Fantasy
Halo
Zelda
Mario(to a smaller degree as there is only so much to do with the concept)
Pokemon
Sports games(for those that like roster updates I don't see why stuff like that can't be DLC or something to that effect and then release a new game every 2-3 years when they really looked at the game engine, graphics, mechanics and bugs and have made real advances compared to tiny ones they do now)

WHAT?! Halo 1 2 and 3 all sucked balls, but ODST was what got me into Halo.

OT: Zelda games. Every time a new one is unveiled I wince and have to resist the urge to punch whatever told me about it.

Duke should've bit the bullet before his last game.
Pokemon needs to die i think, cause after like 600+ pokemon the new ones just suck now.
Also, mario party! The eighth one was horrible!

HALO HAS TO END. They're 'milking' the story too much now. CoD is different they come up with a new campaign or continue a previous game's campaign, the multiplayer although always with the same premis is rather always put in a different setting. I can see how you apply the same words to Halo being different but that's just my opinion

Assassin's Creed should have been a simple trilogy: AC1, AC2, AC3. I bought 1 and 2 but I refuse to buy another one until it's a real ending to the series.

>>>So fellow escapees, which games do you think should stop already?

The ones that aren't making any money should stop.

(Sidenote: Seriously? I liked Halo 1. Halo 2 was meh. Halo 3 was awful and made me swear off the series. Halo: Reach was good to the point that I tried the previously-skipped ODST. Halo: ODST was also enjoyable. I also liked Wars but that is a different game really. It's funny how, IMO, the side games brought the universe more to life than the main series.)

Anyway, this topic sucks and is now about how people should stop making topics about how things they personally don't like should end even though many others do like the series. One would think that, after all the topics bashing on the Wii and everything associated with it, these kind of topics would have gotten old and stale.

Nope. There is still no stopping these topics. They've become the equivalent of those Downfall videos that people kept making where Hitler (oooo, I managed to invoke Godwin) would rattle off on whatever topic the creator wanted to bang on about. Sure, the first one was unexpectedly amusing and the few after that were somewhat clever but then EVERYONE was doing it.

Is this really the extent of the creativity at the Escapist? To continually make topics that have been done to death and are usually just kindling for a flame war?
