Charles Darwin, he'd probably be flabbergasted at the fact that some scientist misinterpreted his work.
;)
Not sure what you mean by that, stating the nature of the "misinterpretation" may be much more informative than you know, throwing out a very vague statement.

Anyway, I'd go with Dr. Guillotin, who invented the famous execution device as a means of delivering a relatively painless humane means of execution. He in no way intended it to be used as a symbol of terror by bloody revolutionaries executing innocents on nothing but base suspicion.
It's actually hard to explain. But I think Spore straightened me out on it. =P

Mr. Nobel was the inventor of dynamtie, and he really hated that. He didn't like the destructive power of it, and so, to make himself seem like the good guy, he came up with Nobel Prizes!

just to break in and be a pedantic shite again, I was reffering to the theory of gene flow in a common gene pool, where according to the hardy principle every allele being evenly spread throughout the genepool. wich uncle adolf has raped into his "purification of human species"

I do hate myself now..

A guy called Thomas Midgely was a person mentioned on QI and he might just take the cake on this one.

He wanted to stop an engine car knocking and played around with some chemicals to put in petrol. He found that LEAD did the job perfectly and it caught on. 50 years of adding lead to the world's petrol followed. Then, he invented the CFCs that they used in freezers, that also rip through the ozone. Genius at the time, one of the most tragic scientists in history now.

Wow, my brain hurts after pulling that thought out of my mind...

Joseph Wilbrand, discovered trinitrotoluene that he wanted to use as a dye.

We all know what application it really has now, and in the past (both World Wars for example)

EDIT: for clarity, I am referring to TNT
Ninja'd, almost word for word what I was going to say

I think it's hilarious that the bra was invented by a woman, when it was later seen as a sign of females being persecuted. Just throwing that out there.

Alexander Graham Bell apparently hated the telephone, and refused to be in the same room as one on more than one occasion. The fact that they are now ubiquitous to modern life would horror him I believe.
he didn't invent that. he worked at a patenting office, and stole the idea from someone else, the name of whom escapes me. however, whoever it was died before the matter could be brought to trial.

i suspect a guilty conscience was what upset him so much.

Alfred Nobel.

He was pretty mortified with his creation during his own lifetime. He'd be even more unhappy to see what we've refined explosives to and how we use them now.

I think the Wright brothers wouldn't be best pleased either, they invent manned flight, the rest of us work out ways to use them to drop billions of tons of explosives (that Nobel bloke again) on each other.

I don't think he would be. He whupped Edison's ass in the electric race, and now the electricity that pulses 'round the world is based upon his current, which I believe is the alternating current (AC)?

Al Gore...inventor of the environment. Look at what it's become now. For shame.
I was going to say that, but he didn't really INVENT it. He defined it. It has been in effect since the plants and animals appeared on Earth.
It's a joke from Futurama.

OT: Probably the person who invented the guitar, I mean come on.

We all know that Nobel hated what became of dynamite. I think we can start considering the Nobel Prize as something with which he might also feel uncomfortable. I know this is playing an old saw, but Al Gore did nothing to promote peace, and some of those who won for literature are of dubious talent but obvious politics.
I can't stop thinking about Henry Kissinger...

But yeah, that poor guy Nobel. Always had the most noblest of intentions and every time someone else came a lot and made all his efforts worthless. Irony really ganged up on that poor soul.
