Which PC game showed you the light?

Like most middle class, North American children my first video game experience came at the hands of an stereotypical Italian plumber. The bleeps and bloops combined with the ability to both run AND jump were enough to bedazzle my 8 year old mind. All Mario Bros. did, however, was introduce me to a new world, as it did likewise for many of you.

It wasn't until I played a fairly unknown game called "Conquests of Camelot" that the fever took hold. It was made by Sierra, and solidly existed in the niche they created with "King's Quest" brand. It wasn't particularily well made and I doubt you'll find it on anyone's top 10 list (including my own), but it caught my imagination. While Mario and all his friends were very fun to play with, it was only ever a game. It still used the arcade throw back of limited lives, and when it was turned off, any progress you made was wiped clean. This was all I had ever known, and happily played along. My first PC encounter forever changed my expectations. For the first time I felt a measure of immersion, albeit a fairly minor one by today's standards, but it was still undeniably there. For a bit, I was that knight in a strange land tasked with a quest of the utmost importance.

I'd be lying if I said I'd turned my back on consoles after this. I've enjoyed my fair share of time with analog sticks and ergonomically placed thumb buttons. They were only trists though. Moments of folly and fun. In the end, PC games will always be my time-waster of choice. What PC game brought you into the fold?

The Orange Box.
Before that I was playing crappy EA RTS's (eg., Battle for Middle Earth II). I played Halo, way back when, but the Orange Box showed me Steam, Valve...ahhh.

The Settlers, back in '93. That kept me awake night after night.

I'm not sure if it was immersion or addiction, but after that I was a gamer.

The first PC game I played was Half-Life 2. Needless to say, I was hooked.

I had played a few Atari games, Pitfall, and a few others I can't remember the names of, but the one that "showed me the light" was Doom (the original one back from '93), been playing computer games since.

I've played PC games for almost as long as I can remember but I didn't start playing multiplayer online until I got Battlefield 1942. That game got me hooked on multiplayer gameplay for life.

Champions of Krynn on the Amiga. Serious old school stuff. Then years later I discovered the horribly addictive world of MUDs and I became so lame as to draw maps and write notes.

I'm not sure I understand the question. Is it, "name the PC game that convinced you PC platform is the best ever?"

Cuz, you know, confessing to be a fanboy isn't on my agenda for today ;)

Sorry, I guess this might come across as a fanboy thread. That wasn't the intention. I was trying to speak from my personal experience, and was hoping that there were others out there that shared my passion/fervor/addiction. This is by no means an attempt to start anything. To each there own. It just so happens that my own is PC games.

The original Wing Commander. I didn't play it until it had been out for a year or two, but I absolutely loved it and the rest of the series. The Command & Conquer series later strengthened my love of PC games.

I'd been a gamer for over a decade by the time the summer between junior and senior years in HS rolled around. I had a girlfriend in the summer of '94 who gave me some floppy discs and a photocopied page from the manual marked "Copy Protection Answers" and said "try this. You'll love it" like some sort of cybernetic drug pusher. I installed the game, played a round of it, and thought "My gods, they don't make games like this for Nintendo!"

The game? Sid Meier's Civilization. And my life has never been the same since.

my first console was the sega genesis (forgot what age i was, 4/5 maybe)
I really dont know when I started playing PC. My mom put some games on the windows 3.1 computer we had. Fired up DOS, and started playing.

Secret Agent, Commander Keen, Crystal Caves, Blakestone, the original Duke Nukem, Biomenace (they really need to remake that game), Skyroads, Transport Tycoon (was the fucking shit, I still play that) and countless others.

PC childhood really
But I still love my consoles

Serf City (the very first settlers game). And while it's graphically dated (we're talking 1994 here people), I still find it superior to every Settler's game released since! lol

Oh! And there was this little game by the name of Prince of Persia too....
